Biography[]
Max Keller is present with Paulo Rocca at a hotel/casino owned by Luigi Patrovita when they first meet a felon from Miami named Joseph P. Brenner looking forward to joining them after recently giving their rival, Martin Lamanski a hard time in order to get on the former's good side, unaware that he is actually a former FBI agent named Mark Kaminski who has been asked by FBI Chief Harry Shannon to infiltrate and tear up Patrovita's organization in order to avenge the death of his FBI agent son, Blair, thanks to a leak within the FBI department. Nevertheless, Keller doesn't believe a word "Brenner" says after the latter leaves despite his envy as well and sends 3 of his men after him in order to have him looked over, which obviously backfires. Even when Keller sends his attractive employee, Monique (whom he constantly flirts with to no avail) to do some more digging, it doesn't prove useful due to Brenner thinking smart and ahead of things.
A few days later, Keller is assigned to go with Brenner (on a temporary basis) at night to a queer club owned by Metzger in order to coax him into stop paying Lamanski the same way he's been paying Patrovita. When Keller threatens to kill Metzger with a pocketknife, Brenner intervenes at the last minute and tries a more brutal yet less fatal approach on how to force the latter to stop paying Lamanski anymore, which somehow annoys Keller despite the successful result. While leaving, Keller and Brenner run into Detective Baker whom Brenner previously met the night Keller sent 3 of his men after him before the latter leaves.
A few nights later, at Patrovita's house, Keller purposefully has his picture taken with Rocca and Brenner during a party in order to take matters into his own hands and find out more about who Brenner really is since all other previous attempts have failed so far. As days go by, Max is present with Patrovita and Rocca at the hotel/casino as they discuss on how to recover $100 million of heroin and cash at a police station seized by the feds from one of Patrovita's hideouts a few days ago. Keller scoffs at Brenner's bomb suggestion even though Patrovita shows interest when Brenner clarifies about a bomb threat.
After blowing up one police station, at night at the hotel/casino, Keller tries flirting with and getting more information from Monique again at the same time despite her initial disgust and resistance until he is reluctantly forced by Brenner at gunpoint to leave after failing to make the first move. Later, Keller is splashed with champagne by Monique in anger while leaving after she finds out that Brenner is actually married since she was really starting to get close with him during the past few days.
The next day, while Patrovita's men recover the stolen money and heroin, Keller and Brenner along with an extra killer drive to a synagogue as they wait for Lamanski to come out and waste him as a diversion. After a long car chase throughout the city, both Lamanski and his men are killed by gunshots and finally, in an explosion when their car accidentally hits a tanker. Later on, after Keller finds out from a crooked Miami police informant that the "Brenner" he met is not the same one the latter arrested twice in 2 weeks 3 years ago before retiring to the Caribbean and Patrovita plans to take out FBI Chief Shannon, thanks to the leak who turns out to be Special Federal Prosecutor Marvin Baxter who cost Kaminski's career 5 years ago, Keller suggests they have Brenner do the job instead.
After witnessing Monique kiss Brenner good-bye, Keller drives Brenner and another killer to a cemetery where they intend to kill Shannon visiting his deceased son, thus, forcing Kaminski to blow his cover. In the ensuing shootout, both Keller and the other killer are killed whereas Shannon is severely wounded and crippled.
With Keller dead, Brenner, resuming his real identity, Kaminski again, takes down all of Patrovita's men at both the latter's gravel pit and hotel/casino including Patrovita himself, Rocca, and Baxter and is finally reinstated with the FBI. Monique is free to start a new life with $250,000 in cash and no obligations to anyone before flying away to another country whereas Kaminski's wife, Amy is pregnant and Shannon is asked to be the former's child's godfather in exchange for completing his therapy, which Shannon accepts.
