Max Long is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Hooked". He is a pornographic filmmaker who knowingly hires underage and HIV positive actors for his films and ultimately murders one of them to cover it up.
He was portrayed by Matt Malloy, who also played Ned Lasky in the original Law & Order.
Biography[]
Max was the owner of Long Video, a company specializing in pornographic films. His actors included Lisa Downey, a 15-year-old girl who often prostituted herself to older men, who starred in several of his films under the name "Trudi Strutts". Max was aware that Lisa was underage and used this knowledge to blackmail Dr. Derek Tanner, who was having sex with her, into secretly testing his stars for sexually-transmitted diseases. On at least one occasion Max filmed a threesome between Lisa, Tanner, and another underage girl, Lisa's best friend Angela Agnelli, for Tanner's personal viewing.
The STD tests Tanner was running eventually revealed that Lisa and many of Max's other actors had contracted HIV. Max blackmailed Tanner into providing him with fake medical records in order to cover up their statuses so he could continue filming. However, Lisa found out from Tanner that she was HIV positive and began causing trouble for Max, who knew that an underage porn star with HIV could destroy his business, so he decided to kill her. While shooting a film called Wendy Does The White House, he left the shoot under the guise of filming some establishing shots and invited Lisa to meet him on an adjoining rooftop before bludgeoning her to death with his camera tripod.
"Hooked"[]
The NYPD's Special Victims Unit begin investigating Lisa's murder after her body is found by a scout troop. They soon discover Lisa's HIV status and that she and Angela were prostituting themselves to older men, which leads them to Tanner's affair with Lisa. Tanner is shot dead in his home soon after being discovered, which leads the SVU to discover the sex tape between Tanner, Angela, and Lisa. When Angela is interviewed about the tape she admits that Lisa was doing hardcore porn for Max Long.
Detectives Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson arrest Max during a porn shoot for promoting the sexual performance of a minor. Max denies knowing that Lisa was underage or that she had HIV, but the SVU soon uncover evidence that he was blackmailing Tanner to perform secret STD tests on his actors and that Tanner sent him Lisa's medical report, proving he did know about her diagnosis. Hairs belonging to Lisa are also found lodged in Max's camera tripod, and the building where he was shooting on the day of the murder proves to be only three minutes away from the murder scene via adjoining rooftops.
Benson, Stabler and Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak confront Max with the evidence against him, accusing him of killing both Lisa and Tanner to cover up the fact that he exposed his stars to HIV. Max claims to have an alibi for both crimes, as he was shooting a film at the time of Lisa's murder and was at a charity event when Tanner was killed, but Novak reveals that they interviewed the cast of Wendy Does The White House, who told them that Max had physically abused Lisa whenever she complained and had left the shoot for 20 minutes on the day of the murder to film some establishing shots. Although Max's alibi for Tanner's murder cannot be broken (it is later revealed that Tanner was actually killed by Angela after he refused to give her the sex tape), he is arrested for Lisa's murder.
