~ Matarazzo blaming Fedelia for her own murder. |
Max Matarazzo is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Babes". He is the jealous boyfriend of Fidelia Vidal who murders her for cheating on him and getting pregnant, and makes it look like a suicide.
He was portrayed by Jesse McCartney.
Early life[]
Max was raised in a devout Christian household. He and his girlfriend Fidelia Vidal started dating in middle school and both pledged to remain virgins until marriage. Once they graduated to Blessed Heart High School, a private Christian academy, they both joined a youth group and preached abstinence to their classmates.
Unbeknownst to Max, however, Fidelia and a group of her friends entered into a "pregnancy pact", pledging to get pregnant and give birth together. Fidelia had sex with wannabe hip-hop DJ Donald Zuccho, who called himself "DJ Dizzer", and got pregnant.
"Babes"[]
After Alec Bernardi murders a man who impregnated his sister Tina, another member of the "pact", and sets him on fire, the NYPD's Special Victims Unit traces the blowtorch used in the murder to Blessed Heart. There, Detective Elliot Stabler and Sergeant John Munch question Max, who steers them toward suspecting Alec, who eventually confesses to the murder.
Max eventually finds out about Fidelia's pregnancy, and storms into her house to confront her as Stabler and his partner, Detective Olivia Benson, are questioning her about the pact. Fidelia bursts into tears, begging Max to forgive her. Max replies that even Christians make mistakes, and they embrace.
That night, however, Max's jealousy gets the better of him, and he goes to her house to confront her. He finds her in her room, chatting online with someone who is sending her abusive direct messages calling her a whore and telling her to kill herself. (The messages are in fact from Peggy Bernardi, Alec and Tina's mother.) Max tries to comfort her when she starts crying, but she slaps him and calls him a coward, insinuating that he is only chaste because he is afraid to have sex. Enraged, Max chokes her to death. Upon realizing what he has done, Max ties a belt around Fidelia's neck to make her death look like suicide.
Following Fidelia's death, Stabler and Munch arrest Peggy for murder, reasoning that she had driven the girl to suicide. During the trial, Assistant District Attorney Kim Greylek presents as evidence an email from Fidelia saying that "Fath is knocking", which she argues means that her father was calling her. Tina interrupts the trial and says that "Fath" means "First and True Husband", and the detectives realize that she had been talking about Max.
Stabler and Munch confront Max at school, and accuse him of killing Fidelia. Max denies it at first, but eventually breaks down and confesses after Stabler and Munch empathize with his feelings of hurt and betrayal over Fidelia cheating on him. As he is taken into custody, Max laments that he has prayed to God for forgiveness, but God doesn't answer him. He is convicted of first-degree manslaughter and sentenced to four years in prison.
