~ Max |
Max Mitsopolis, or simply Max, is the overarching antagonist of the 1996 spy film Mission: Impossible, the first instalment in the film series of the same name. She is an arms dealer in league with corrupted IMF operatives seeking to recover a list of infiltrators in Central Europe.
She was portrayed by Vanessa Redgrave, who also portrayed The Evil Queen in Faerie Tale Theatre.
Biography[]
Mission: Impossible[]
Max makes a deal with Jim Phelps: the list in exchange for money. Phelps accepts and kills members of his team. Ethan Hunt, who survives, learns of Max's existence and Job. He meets her and reveals that half of the list she received was false and included a tracking device. When the disc is tested, she realized Ethan was right. Max then makes a deal with Ethan: steal the genuine list in exchange for Job's money and identity. Ethan was also provided with $150,000, which he used to finance his new team. After Ethan retrieved the list, He finds Phelps and realizes that he was the mastermind behind the murders of his colleagues. A meeting was then organized in a TGV for Ethan to send the list to Max. Luther prevents Max from downloading the list. After Phelps and Franz Krieger are killed by Ethan, Max was found by Kittridge and the CIA, about to be arrested. She then manages to negotiate an agreement to remain free.
Fallout[]
Max does not make an appearance in the film (since she died due of unknown causes prior the events of the film), but is mentioned by her daughter Alanna (a.k.a White Widow), who helps Ethan capture Solomon Lane in exchange for a plutonium sphere.
Dead Reckoning: Part I[]
Max is also mentioned in the film by Kittridge, where it is revealed that she ended up in IMF custody after the events of the first film and later died sometime before Fallout.
Trivia[]
- Max is considered by some fans to be the main antagonist of the film since she corrupted Jim Phelps and manipulated Ethan Hunt and Phelps himself. However, Phelps is the actual main antagonist because he lead the plot and served as a more dangerous and important threat to Ethan and his team.
