Maxim Slaughter is the main antagonist of the Sierra game EcoQuest 2: Lost Secret of the Rainforest. He is an evil poacher who hunts endangered species and poses as a surveyor for the South American rainforest, but is actually after treasure rumored to be hidden in the nearby village and is willing to do anything, even kill anyone in his way, to get his hands on it.
History[]
He initially presents himself as a surveyor for Cibola Development, but is in fact a greedy poacher who wants to locate the legendary city of Cibola which is rumored to be within the rainforest, and steal the treasure he believes is hidden there. As a result he neglected his duties and spent all his resources on finding the hidden city, while also poaching a number of endangered species and keeping their trophies in one of his hideouts, as well as selling others for profit. His activities have devastated much of the rainforest while his superiors appear to be in the dark about his unethical activities. He's also made some unscrupulous connections, being connected to foreign dictators such as Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, as well as Pol Pot, an unseen contact of his who's implied to be involved in training totalitarian regimes.
Upon locating the hidden village where he believes the treasure is, Slaughter raids the village and sets it ablaze, burning it down with no regard for the people living there along with Forest Heart, an ancient tree that serves as the rainforest’s guardian. He also captures Adam Greene and tries to interrogate him about the treasure, but is captured by the rainforest creatures and later arrested by the local authorities.
Personality[]
He shows himself to be extraordinarily sadistic and rapacious, not only treating animals terribly but also burning down an inhabited village just for a chance at finding the treasure. He cares only about his own profit and admits to hating nature in general, and would gladly destroy anything in his path for his own gain.
