| ~ Patrick McReary to Niko Bellic about the family's former power. |
The McReary Crime Family are major characters in the 2008 video game Grand Theft Auto IV and minor antagonists in the 2009 DLC spin-off, The Ballad of Gay Tony.
They are an Irish mob running in Dukes, Liberty City. The family is run by convict, Gerald McReary along with his brothers, Patrick McReary and Derrick McReary.
History[]
Background[]
The family was started with the abusive, alcoholic patriarch, Mr. McReary who started the mob along with several associates and his three (loyal) sons, Derrick, Gerald and Patrick. According to Packie in various scenes throughout the game, the family was extremely powerful, more powerful than Italian mafia families, including the Ancelottis and the Pegorinos. Eventually, the family hit a downfall as Mr. McReary committed suicide, leaving the inexperienced Gerald in charge.
Events in Grand Theft Auto IV[]
In 2008, after they added Rodney McEniry, Michael Keane and Gordon Sargent to the family, the family lost a majority of their power. They would instead do petty jobs for the Pegorinos, mainly for Ray Boccino. Through the McReary's close associate, Elizabeta Torres, gun-for-hire, Niko Bellic begins working for the McReary's with him helping Patrick with certain jobs, including the Bank of Liberty City heist in which Michael Keane is killed, helping Gerald break the peace between the Ancelottis and the Albanians and helping Derrick get rid of his former associates, Bucky and Aiden.
Soon after, Niko is approached by the police officer black sheep of the family, Francis who attempts to make Niko kill Derrick. The player can either preserve or ruin the family dynamic as they can either kill Derrick or Francis. If the player kills Derrick, they receive between $10,000 to $20,000 as well as ability to lose wanted level from Francis and if they kill Francis, they improve their friendship with Packie.
Later on, Gerald is arrested and in a last ditch effort to reestablish the family's lost power, Gerald enforces Packie and Niko to kidnap Gracie Ancelotti, the daughter of Giovanni Ancelotti, don of the Ancelotti Family, in a scheme to recover the diamonds stolen from Ray Boccino by Anthony "Gay Tony" Prince and Luis Lopez. Just before the deal, Gerald meets up with Niko, asking Niko to protect his family, showing the true downfall of the family. At first, the deal goes successfully, that is until Niko's old boss, Ray Bulgarin crashes the deal, taking the diamonds, to which one of his soldiers drops it into a passing dump truck.
During the third-to-last mission in the game, the player has two choices. They can choose "Deal" where they join sides with the primary antagonist of the game, Dimitri Rascalov, or they can choose "Revenge" and murder Dimitri. If they choose "Deal", Dimitri betrays Niko, as he sends out an assassin to kill Niko's cousin, Roman at the latter's wedding and eventually kills his business partner, Jimmy Pegorino. If instead the player chooses "Revenge", Pegorino does a drive-by shooting at Roman's wedding, killing Packie's sister and Niko's girlfriend, Kate, with Niko then killing Pegorino. After the last mission (if the player chooses "Revenge"), Packie calls Niko, insanely depressed and grieving, with the status of the family completely changed.
Events in Grand Theft Auto V[]
Not much is known about what happened after the events of GTA IV, but what is known is that Packie appears in GTA V set in 2013. During his random encounter, he is seen with an unnamed assailant, who is most likely a soldier in the family. During the encounter, he is seen reminiscing about his life in Liberty City, annoying his accomplice. After this, Packie is unlocked as a crew member for heists, and talks about his heist of the Liberty City Bank during the "Paleto Bay Heist", also informing Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips that Derrick had since died in the events between 2008 to 2013 (if he is not killed by Niko). To this day, it is unknown who is the current boss of the family, if the family is still running and if a majority of it's members are dead.
