King Mondo: So, a little virus shakes them up does it? That could be very useful.
Queen Machina: To see those pathetic humans scramble over that machine. We’re soooo superior.
Klank: Yer majesty, I just had a splendid idea.
Prince Sprocket: I know. Why don’t we send down our own computer virus? Since everything in Angel Grove seems to be run by computers, it will totally mess everything up.
Klank: It was my ide-
Mondo: Put a cog in it. Sprocket, that was a wonderful idea. It just so happens that I have the perfect candidate. Mean Screen! Let’s see what the Power Rangers do when everything comes to a screeching halt!
~ The plan for Mean Screen.

Mean Screen is the Computer and Bird-themed monster of the Machine Empire serving Klank and Orbus and a minor antagonist in Power Rangers Zeo. He serves as the eponymous main antagonist of the episode "Mean Screen" and a cameo antagonist in the episode "It came from Angel Grove."

He is voiced by Karim Prince who is most well known as Cestro from Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers.

Biography[]

Past[]

Mean Screen was manufactured by the Machine Empire, working under King Mondo and Queen Machina. With their monsters and never-ending army of Cogs, the Machine Empire was able to devastate and conquer entire galaxies with Mean Screen contributing by inserting viruses into the enemies' technology and rendering it useless..

Zeo[]

In 1996, King Mondo leads his Machine Empire to the Moon where they drive out Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa but their invasion is ultimately stalled by the interference of the Zeo Rangers.

After seeing Tanya get a computer virus whilst browsing the internet for the first time, King Mondo wonders how to exploit this so Prince Sprocket steals an idea from Klank to cause chaos in Angel Grove and disable the Zeo Rangers' arsenal and Zords using a computer virus. Delighted with the idea, Mondo sends Mean Screen down with Klank and Orbus to do so. Breaking into the Angel Grove Computer Center, they are able to access the computers of the entire city and even the Power Chamber since all are connected to the larger grid. Whilst there, he downloads all information on the Rangers' weapons and even discovers the Zeozord blueprints whilst also uploading the crippling virus. Said virus causes chaos such as by making ATMs spit out infinite money, making motion sensor doors open and close randomly to annoy people, making traffic bollards open and close randomly and rendering the Zeozords completely unusable.

When Tommy and Tanya arrive at the Computer Center, Mean Screen ambushes and overwhelms them with lightning and his arm blades. Even when the other Rangers arrive late due to an ambush from the Cogs, and despite being outnumbered, Mean Screen proves to be too strong for them and even the Advanced Zeo Laser Pistols prove useless as he just defeats them with an energy shield as he downloaded all of their blueprints whilst inserting the virus. Although overpowered and with the Zords now rendered useless, they split up so Mean Screen pursues and tries to cut them apart. As they attempt to flee the building though, they are blasted from the building and shot down when even the Zeo Blaster fails. Before Mean Screen can finish them off though, Alpha manages to isolate the Defender Wheel from Mean Screen's virus so Tommy summons it and the monster is obliterated since he cannot use his virus.

Despite this, the destroyed Mean Screen turns out to be a clone created immediately after the Rangers were ejected from the building so an impressed King Mondo has Klank and Orbus enlarge Mean Screen. Although the virus prevents the Rangers from summoning the Zeozords, Adam quickly obtains an antivirus from his friend Raymond which Alpha uses to purge Mean Screen's virus so they can form the Zeo Megazord. Mean Screen tries to reinsert a virus into it by frying it with his wires but they break free before ramming and blasting him away with the Zeo IV Battle Helmet and then using the Zeo III Battle Helmet to pick up and slam him into the ground. With Mean Screen stunned, they then use it to smash his screen which leaves him powerless and they swiftly destroy him with the Zeo Megazord Saber.

Sprocket: I really hate those lousy Power Rangers! Look at what they've done this time! Mommy, they've ruined my favourite creation!
Machina: There, there my dear. Don't blame yourself. You mustn't take it personally. They have ruined all our creations.
~ Sprocket and Machina after Punch-A-Bunch destroyed his glove.

After Prince Sprocket complains about Punch-A-Bunch damaging himself during battle against the Zeo Rangers, Boohoo the Clown is indirectly referenced along with all previous monsters used up to that point when Machina reassures her distraught son that the Rangers have ruined all of their monsters.

A dream version of Mean Screen is seen after Zordonicus reveals himself to be King Mondo and torments Adam with a group of Cogs and past monsters. However, this version of Mean Screen almost immediately ceases to exist when Adam abruptly wakes up from his dream.

When Adam finds a cog medallion whilst training for a karate tournament, Klank bemoans how this could lead to the failure of the plan with Admiral Abominator but Orbus mentions it not being the first time; indirectly referencing Mean Screen.

Mean Screen is rebuilt and seen in the audience at Prince Gasket's Machine Arena when Tommy forces Jason to fight Altor. However, the Rangers are later able to escape after Tritor destroys the shield generator which renders Gasket's plan a failure. What happened to Mean Screen after this is unknown as he was never seen again but it is likely that Zordon's Energy Wave vaporised him since there was nothing redeemable about him.

Personality[]

Mean Screen is an obsessed and focused hacker who enjoys ruining computers and causing chaos with his virus. In battle, he is an extremely violent psychopath who loves causing mindless destruction although he is loyal to Klank and Orbus. Even so, he can become very annoyed when others abandon the fight as seen when the Zeo Rangers split up.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Power: Mean Screen is one of the most powerful monsters in Zeo, being able to decimate the Zeo Rangers singlehandidly and counter almost all of their weapons with no effort. Even the Advanced Zeo Laser Pistols and Zeo Blaster were useless against him, only being defeated because of Raymond's antivirus.
  • Strength: Mean Screen could strike the Rangers with the flat side of his arm blades with enough force to knock away Tommy and Rocky and send both Rocky and Kat flying with one slash. When giant, he could grab onto and easily restrain the Zeo Megazord.
  • Durability: Mean Screen was unhurt by a building exploding around him. As a giant, his own electricity being redirected back into him, multiple punches from the Zeo Megazord, the Zeo IV Battle Helmet's lightning and being slammed into the ground by the Zeo III Battle Helmet failed to hurt him at all.
    • Face Armour: Mean Screen can also equip metal armour over his screen face to increase his defences although it never came into use.
  • Skilled Fighter: Mean Screen is a very skilled fighter, being able to decimate all five Zeo Rangers.
  • Wire Entanglement: Mean Screen can launch cables from around his body to restrain his enemies so they could not fight.
    • Hacking: Mean Screen can put his wires inside machines and easily hack into complex computer systems.
    • Virus Injection: Using these wires, Mean Screen can insert a virus to scramble systems so that machines go mad and the Zeozords can no longer combine due to him infecting the main operating computer.
      • Machine Control: Mean Screen could take control of any machines remotely such as ATMs to make them disperse money.
    • Electrocution: Mean Screen cam electrocute his enemies with blue electricity using his wires.
  • Eye Blasts: Mean Screen can fire blue lasers from his eyes.
  • Digital Transport: Mean Screen can travel through computer monitors by transforming into blue energy and transporting in and out of them.
  • "Power Surges:" Mean Screen can fire blue energy from his right hand that was strong enough to knock down Tommy and Tanya.
  • Antenna Lightning: Mean Screen can spray green lightning from his antenna which were powerful enough to send Tommy and Tanya flying.
    • Lightning Spray: Mean Screen can fire less focused green lightning from his antenna to cover a wider but limited area.
  • Weapons Scanning: Using the information he gathered from the Power Chamber's computer systems, Mean Screen can download the schematics of weapons and discover flaws in thier designs.
    • Screensavers: Mean Screen can generate blue energy shields that rendered any weapons that he scanned the blueprints of completely useless.
  • Computer Bombs: Mean Screen's most powerful attack where he enters his options menu, selects the bomb icon and launches it from his screen at his enemies. This was strong enough to completely destroy the Computer Center and eject the Zeo Rangers from the premises.
  • Back-up Copies: Mean Screen can produce identical looking and sounding copies of himself although how he does this is unclear as he did it off-screen.

Weaknesses[]

  • Network Isolation: Mean Screen's virus works by using the citywide internet in Angel Grove to infect entire computer networks. However, if something is isolated from the network such as the Defender Wheel, Mean Screen cannot infect it and acquire the blueprints.
  • Uninfected Weapons: If a weapon is not infected with his virus, like the Defender Wheel, Mean Screen cannot prevent it from defeating him.
  • Antivirus: Like all viruses, Mean Screen's can be destroyed by Raymond's antivirus which ended its chaos across Angel Grove and allowed the Rangers to use the Zeozords.
  • Destroyed Screen: When Mean Screen's screen was smashed, he was powerless and unable to stop his destruction.

Arsenal[]

  • Arm Blades: Mean Screen has enormous silver blades strapped to his wrists which he can use to cut down his enemies or smack them with the flat sides of the blades.
    • Lightning Blasts: Mean Screen can spray green lightning from the tip of his arm blades. These are powerful enough to cause large explosions and take down all five Zeo Rangers.
      • Lightning Rain: Mean Screen can also fire his green lightning into the air to make lightning rain down on his enemies which is strong enough to throw down all five Zeo Rangers.
    • Finisher Destruction: Mean Screen can cross his arm blades and use a scissor motion to destroy finishing attacks as seen with the Zeo Blaster.

Trivia[]

  • In Ohranger, the Defender Wheel successfully defeated Mean Screen which is why he was knocked out when Orbus enlarged him. Why this was changed to him cloning himself for Zeo is unknown.
  • Because Bara Devil did not have a growth sequence in Ohranger, Mean Screen's growth sequence was used for Fortissimodo in the previous episode.
