~ Mecha Sonic to the Scrapniks in Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island #4. |
Mecha Sonic Mk. II is the secondary antagonist of the 1994 platform game Sonic & Knuckles and the main antagonist of the spinoff IDW comic mini-series Scrapnik Island.
He is the third robotic replica of Sonic created by Dr. Eggman, after Metal Sonic and Silver Sonic.
Appearance[]
Unlike Silver Sonic, who had more of a bulkier, rough appearance, Mecha Sonic has more of a sleek, thin appearance, with large gauntlets and a visor. His color scheme is also closer to the real Sonic himself, having a dark shade of blue and red "shoes". When he curls into a ball, he becomes a spiky, sharp ball.
Personality[]
Like Silver Sonic, Mecha Sonic is programmed with an obedient personality. He is a cold and silent predator who is willing to take orders without hesitation.
Biography[]
Mecha Sonic made his debut in Sonic and Knuckles, where Sonic fought him three times at Sky Sanctuary while tracking down the Death Egg. The first two battles against Mecha Sonic are against the Wrecker and Flying Eggman bosses from the first two games in the series, but this time with Mecha Sonic piloting the Egg Mobile. After the first two battles, after going up the final transporter, Mecha Sonic has one final battle with Sonic, dashing past him to destroy the transporter and fighting Sonic physically. Despite his efforts, Mecha Sonic winds up defeated and likely destroyed by Sonic as he proceeds to the Death Egg.
In Knuckles' story, after the events of the Angel Island incident, Knuckles arrived at Sky Sanctuary sometime after the Death Egg was destroyed, and found that Mecha Sonic was revealed to still be alive, and had a Lone EggRobo try to stop Knuckles for revenge in the past. After Knuckles is caught by Lone EggRobo, Mecha Sonic engages in one final battle with Knuckles after failing to attack the captured Knuckles and accidentally destroying Lone EggRobo. Despite being defeated again, Mecha Sonic immediately reactivates and in one final attempt to defeat Knuckles, rushes over to the Master Emerald, using its power to gain a super form of his own. Despite being powered by the Master Emerald, though, Knuckles was still able to destroy him for good.
In the bad ending of Sonic and Knuckles, He was shown in a post-credits scene recovering from damage and absorbing power from the Master Emerald; however, this was likely just a representation of the battle between him and Knuckles, as he was shown to be completely destroyed after the battle and does not appear in any later games, replaced by the more infamous Metal Sonic.
Other Media[]
Archie Comics[]
Mecha Sonic is the name given to the roboticized version of Sonic the Hedgehog in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series by Archie Comics.
Robotnik managed to have Sonic captured by Nack the Weasel and roboticized the hedgehog, making him his slave. Mecha Sonic, as he was called, was sent to Knothole, where he managed to defeat both Bunnie Rabbot and Knuckles, and continued to wreak destruction on the village, until the Freedom Fighters were left with only one option. In the Mecha Madness super-special, Knuckles roboticized himself, using a neural overrider to retain free will. Mecha Sonic and Mecha Knuckles fought to a standstill until they were both sent spiraling towards Robotropolis, where their impact caused a nuclear explosion which severely damaged Mecha Sonic, and would have killed Mecha Knuckles had it not been for Sonic's regaining his will and throwing himself in front of Knuckles at the last minute. Afterward, Nicole managed to de-roboticize Sonic with the help of the magical protection conferred to him by his recently acquired one-billionth power ring.
Mecha Sonic was able to fly and hover using thrusters in his shoes. He had hyper jet boosters, teleportation, laser blasts, twin wrist lasers and dramatically increased strength, and his computer brain gave him digital tracking and allowed him to do complex mathematical calculations in seconds. Mecha Sonic stood at 130 cm and weighed 170 kg.
Mecha Sonic reappeared for one issue when Sonic and Tails were robotized by the Bem to fight Dr. Robotnik and Snively (who had been transformed back into organics) in an experiment to determine whether or not organic Mobians were superior to roboticized ones. Sonic and Tails won the battle and were reverted to normal afterward.
After the Super Genesis Wave altered the Archie Sonic universe, Mecha Sonic's story presumably changed to that of his mainstream counterpart's, with him being a separate character from Sonic.
IDW Publishing[]
Mecha Sonic appears as the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island mini-series. Here, he gains the ability to talk.
After the events of Sonic & Knuckles, he eventually ended up on an island for scrapped Badniks known as Scrapnik Island, where a resurrected E-117 Sigma shows Mecha around the island, and temporarily redeems him. Although he had become a leader to the other scrapped badniks, and has tried to live a life outside of killing Sonic and serving Eggman, he still fights against that urge constantly. The urge to kill Sonic appears to take over in the second issue, after Mecha Knuckles managed to deal a massive bit of damage, rebooting his former programming. By the third issue, he took Sonic captive and tries to use a device with an unknown purpose on him. When Tails comes looking for Sonic, Mecha, with his newfound ability to communicate, confronted him and stated that he originally hoped that Dr. Eggman would've come looking for him, but realized that he was abandoned, claiming that was a error on his part, and he planned to fix that error.
In Scrapnik Island Issue 4, after attempting to switch minds with Sonic, the other Scrapniks intervene, which causes the destrution of the machine Mecha was using on Sonic. As a result of the procedure, Sonic is able to hear some of Mecha's thoughts. Sonic and Mecha then fight on conveyor belts that lead to an incinerator after Mecha assaults some of the Scrapniks, and the both of them fall in. When Sonic attempts to save Mecha from his firey death, Mecha refuses the offer, as he deems himself a failure due to being unable to defeat Sonic, as well as the fact that he disobeyed his programming. Sonic still sees worth in him, and tries to save him, but is unable to due to Mecha's weight. Luckily, Tails and the other Scrapniks save the both of them, and Mecha is forgiven by the other Scrapniks, which causes Sonic to become teary-eyed whilst claiming that it was actually Mecha's tears.
Lego Dimensions[]
Mecha Sonic makes a brief appearance in Lego Dimensions as a boss in the level "Sonic Dimensions". After Sonic defeats Robo Sonic, Mecha Sonic appears in the second phase of the battle. His attack pattern is mostly the same as Robo Sonic's, but sometimes he will briefly fly up in the air and shoot projectiles at Sonic. Once he is defeated, Metal Sonic will take his place in the third phase.
Sonic the Hedgehog Minecraft Texture Pack[]
Mecha Sonic appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog Texture Pack created by Gamemode One, where he takes the place of the Wither mob. As soon as he reaches half health, he changes into his super form.

Trivia[]
- Technically, Mecha Sonic is the final boss of Sonic & Knuckles, as Knuckles's story is set after Sonic's, which would make him the first final boss in a Sonic the Hedgehog game aside from Eggman, not counting Silver Sonic in the Bad Ending of the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Mecha Sonic and Eggrobo are implied to have been working together, although it is unknown if Mecha Sonic activated Eggrobo, or vice-versa.
- The character was not initially named Mecha Sonic, as the US release of the game had him labeled as Metal Sonic. He was also referred as Evil Sonic in the 1993 comic, Sonic the Comic. However, Sonic 4 Episode I officially confirms the character's name to be Mecha Sonic.
- Ironically, the character Silver Sonic also went through the same trouble, as he was initially referred to as Mecha Sonic in the Japanese release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
- In Sonic Adventure, a robotic replica of Sonic was seen in one of the tubes on the Egg Carrier. Although the robot was later adapted into the Archie Comics as an upgraded Silver Sonic, it was referred to by fans as Mecha Sonic. It was revealed in a podcast by Ian Flynn, that this robot is actually named Mecha Sonic Mk. III.
- Mecha Sonic is well known for being the main antagonist of Alvin-Earthworm's original series; Super Mario Bros. Z Here, he is referred to as Turbo Mecha Sonic, and was the combined form of Metal Sonic, Silver Sonic, and various other robots.
- In Issue 4 of Scrapnik Island, when Mecha Sonic breaks down after his attempt at swapping minds with Sonic fails, he yells "I'LL CRUSH YOU!" at the Scrapniks who botched his plans. Daniel Barns, the writer for the miniseries, confirmed on Twitter that the line originated from the scene where he achieves his semi-super form in the original SMBZ series.
- Canonically, Mecha Sonic and Silver Sonic do not have distinct names, as in the Encyclo-speed-ia, it is confirmed that Silver Sonic is officially known as Mecha Sonic, while Mecha Sonic is known as Mecha Sonic Mk. II.
