Villain Overview

What he lacks in compassion for the sick, respect for human dignity, and any sort of verifiable formal training in medicine, the Medic more than makes up for with a bottomless supply of giant needles and a trembling enthusiasm for plunging them into exposed flesh. Raised in Stuttgart, Germany during an era when the Hippocratic oath had been downgraded to an optional Hippocratic suggestion, the Medic considers healing a generally unintended side effect of satisfying his own morbid curiosity.
~ Official description of the Medic
Wait, wait, wait, it gets better. When the patient woke up, his skeleton was missing, and the doctor was never heard from again!" [Laughs madly]. Anyway, that's how I lost my medical license, heh.
~ The Medic to Heavy in the operating room and a possible story of how Medic lost his license.
Now? *Evil Chuckle* Let's go practice medicine.
~ The Medic to The Heavy on testing the übercharge on their enemies — his most famous quote.

Mr. Ludwig, better known as The Medic, is one of the main protagonists from the 2007 video game Team Fortress 2, serving as one of the nine playable classes.

He is a German Teutonic man of medicine with a rather tenuous adherence to medical ethics, and the primary healing class of the team. He can typically be found near the front-lines, healing wounded teammates while trying to stay out of trouble. While his Medigun is focused on an ally, wounded teammates will quickly regain health, while unharmed teammates' health will be temporarily topped up. While healing, the Medic's ÜberCharge bar will fill up until the weapon begins to crackle, at which point he can activate a deadly charge that either makes himself and an ally temporarily invulnerable (when using the default Medigun) or gives his patient guaranteed critical hits for eight seconds (when using the Kritzkrieg).

He was voiced by Robin Atkin Downes, who also voiced Mumm-Ra in the 2011 Thundercats TV series, Travis Touchdown in the No More Heroes series, and Talbot in the 2011 video-game Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.

Biography[]

Medic wait what

A page from "A Cold Day in Hell".

Based on his explanation about his past during his surgery to graft an Uberheart into the Heavy's chest, he was once a surgeon but had his medical license revoked after causing the entire skeleton of a patient to disappear.

For the most part, the Medic only recently began playing a major role in the comics.

In the comic Ring of Fired, the Medic is considered the best off while the rest of the mercenaries were fired, presumed to be working as a highly paid Doctor. It later becomes apparent he is now working for the Team Fortress Classic Team, who has been hired by Gray Mann to find the Administrator and kill the TF2 mercenary team.

After the Classic Team killed Sniper, Medic used that opportunity to experiment on the corpse. He successfully revived Sniper even after twelve hours of brain death, and warned him about how his experiments were very expensive, so it would be a bad idea to get killed again. Classic Heavy caught him doing so and was furious, and then killed Medic's pet dove, Archimedes. Medic was able to revive him too. Even as Medic prepared to return to the field, Classic Heavy ordered him to remain in his lab, angering the Medic.

Medic rejoins his team, and when their blood is sucked out by robots, puts the blood back in. Shortly he repairs Demoman's knee (putting a little brain in there even as he did so). Classic Heavy turned up and ordered Medic to help sew the immortality machine into him, but to his surprise Medic fought back. However, Classic Heavy overcame Medic, and was about to kill him when Heavy showed up. Just before fighting Heavy, Classic Heavy shot Medic twice in the chest, killing him.

However, it is revealed that Medic had made a deal with Satan, and owes his soul to him (although it is not revealed exactly what he sold his soul for). But before he completes the deal, he informs Satan that he has surgically grafted eight more souls onto his own and so Satan is not a majority shareholder. This time, Medic sells one of his souls for a pen, to get at least fifty years more of life - during which Satan must successfully tempt him at least three more times to get a majority stake to send him to hell.

He then uses this opportunity to rejoin the fight and help the RED team, mainly by distracting the Classic Heavy.

Personality[]

Heavy: Are you sure this will work?
Medic: I have no idea!
~ A conversation between the two, just before the Medic tests out the Quick Fix.

Medic is a maniacal scientist, shown to much, like the other characters, enjoy violence at great heights, as shown in his voice lines and Meet the Team video, where he keeps varying organs including a dismembered head of a BLU Spy, ready for use inside a fridge. Despite this, Medic is supportive and responsible to his own team, especially Heavy, taking the role of the only mercenary dedicated to medical expertise among them. Medic is a scientific genius; inventing the Medi Gun and Kritzkrieg, calculating how many days they have left before the "tumor" kills them, and even assisting Engineer in his experiments. His intelligence even outsmarted Satan's, allowing Medic to escape Hell and return to the living world, resurrected.

Weaponry[]

As the Medic doesn't possess the best arsenal for straight-up gunplay, he can typically be found near the front-lines, healing wounded teammates while trying to stay out of trouble. While his Medigun is focused on an ally, wounded teammates will quickly regain health, while unharmed teammates' health will be temporarily topped up. While healing, the Medic's ÜberCharge bar will fill up until the weapon begins to crackle, at which point he can activate a deadly charge that either makes himself and an ally temporarily invulnerable (when using the default Medi Gun) or gives his patient 100% critical shots for up to 8 seconds (when using the Kritzkrieg).

The Medic is the only class capable of regenerating health over time; the longer a Medic stays out of combat, the faster his health will recover. A damaged Medic will regenerate health at a rate of 3 HP per second, which scales up over the following ten seconds to a maximum of 6 HP per second (though carrying the Blutsauger reduces the regeneration rate from 3-6 to 1-4, and the Crusader's Crossbow and Amputator together will raise it by 1).

The Medic's primary weapon is a syringe gun by default, which fires syringes filled with either lethal injections (to enemies) or vaccinations (to allies) in a similar fashion as a machine gun or assault rifle. A variation known as the Blutsauger allows the Medic to regain health from enemies that he is firing at, but at the cost of having a smaller regeneration rate over time. The Crusader's Crossbow allows the Medic to fire a single, more damaging syringe at once, where the farther it travels, the more damage it inflicts. While it is still capable of dealing critical damage, it can not guarantee it via headshots like the Sniper's Sniper Rifle or Huntsman, unfortunately.

The Medic uses a Medi Gun as his secondary "weapon", which allows the Medic to heal other teammates as well as provide them with an overheal buff, which increases their health by 50% for a limited time; the Medic's regeneration rate will also increase over time as well. While healing, the Medic will build up an Ubercharge, which when completely filled, will allow the Medic to activate a charge that will make him and the player that is being healed temporarily invulnerable for 8 seconds. The Kritzkrieg, a variation to the default Medi Gun, allows the player that is being healed to deal guaranteed critical hits for 8 seconds, but does not make the Medic nor the patient invulnerable.

The Medic carries a Bonesaw as his default melee weapon, very fitting since he is a [former] doctor and is battling mercenaries to the death. Unlike his other weapons, the default Bonesaw (as well as several variations) do not carry any healing properties. The variation known as the Ubersaw allows the Medic to build ÜberCharge from killing enemy mercenaries, adding 25% charge per kill.

The weapon also enables the Medic to use his taunt kill known as Spinal Tap, in which the Medic thrusts the blade of the saw forward, which deals one damage and stuns the enemy, before drawing the weapon back, instantly killing the opponent; if both actions occur, the Medic will receive a full ÜberCharge, as the initial stun adds 25% and the actual kill adds 75%. On the downside, the Ubersaw swings slower.
