Biography[]
After Butcher Creek's water supply was poisoned by lead and arsenic runoff from a nearby mine, the medicine man was hired by the Roanoke Fuel Company to impersonate a spiritualist in order to manipulate the townsfolk into believing the effects of the poison were caused by evil spirits and in doing so protect the company from liability.
The player (Arthur Morgan/John Marston) first comes across the medicine man after dealing with several dogs who were turned feral by the effects of the poisoned water. The medicine man is giving a sermon declaring that the dog's presence proves he was right about the town being cursed. Suspicious, the player interrogates the medicine man, who claims that the curse can be lifted if 13 charms in the nearby woods are destroyed.
After destroying the charms, the player returns and announces that they have lifted the curse. Panicking, the medicine man claims that doing so has "set the curse loose", confusing the townsfolk. The player threatens the medicine man into running away before Obediah, the town leader, tells them about a nearby abandoned mine that the medicine man claims is the origin of the curse. The player decides to investigate the mine.
The player busts into the mine to investigate, finding the mine is full of arsenic and lead leaking into the river. However, the medicine man has followed them to the mine and attempts to kill the player by dynamiting the mineshaft, leaving them trapped down the mine with the poisonous fumes. The player manages to escape by following the runoff down to the river before returning to Butcher Creek with a sample of the poisoned water.
Upon returning the player finds the medicine man trying to convince the townsfolk to sign some papers that he claims will lift the curse. However, Obediah reads the paper before signing, revealing it to be a legal waiver absolving the Roanoke Fuel Company of all responsibility for the water contamination. (This causes the medicine man to panic and try to stop Obediah from reading, as he assumed the Creek residents were all illiterate) The player arrives on the scene to confront the medicine man about the poisoned water. The medicine man claims the water is nothing, at which point the player throws him to the ground and forces him to drink. The medicine man declares "You've killed me!", admitting that the Roanoke Fuel Company paid him to impersonate a medicine man in order to help them evade responsibility for poisoning the town. He then runs away and presumably dies from the poison.
However, the townsfolk believe that the mining company and the poisoned water are merely another part of the curse and refuse to take action against them, meaning the medicine man ultimately succeeded in protecting the company.
