Meena Jutla is a fictional character and supporting antagonist of the long-running British soap opera Emmerdale. She appeared as a supporting character in 2020 and went on to serve as the main antagonist from 2021 up until her departure in April 2022.
In her story arc, Meena is a young nurse who reconciles with her estranged sister Manpreet Julta and initially comes off as a decent person upon settling herself in the village. But it soon transpired that Meena has a homicidal streak and that she is responsible for the deaths of both her and Manpreet's late father, as well as her own best-friend Nadine Butler. She later went on to proceed in killing local wayward Leanna Cavanagh along with fellow villagers Andrea Tate and Ben Tucker in the midst of trying to protect her villainous nature. In the end, however, Meena was eventually arrested and jailed for her crimes; she is consequently sentenced to a minimum of 75 years life imprisonment.
She is portrayed by Paige Sandhu.
Biography[]
Meena Jutla first came to Emmerdale in 2020 with the apparent intention of reconciling with her estranged older sister Manpreet. Upon arrival, she encounters Manpreet and meets her husband Rishi Sharma along with his family - including Rishi's son and old business partner Jai Sharma. At first Manpreet dismisses Meena's attempt to make peace with her and even rebuffs her insistence that she is a changed woman, but eventually the pair gradually reform their once broken bond.
In 2021, Meena begins dating local shopkeeper David Metcalfe whilst his father Eric Pollard is away recuperating from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. David's son Jacob Gallagher initially warms up to Meena, who in the meantime seems to grow jealous of David's past relationships with Jai's sister Priya Sharma as well as his two ex-wives Leyla Harding and Tracy Shankley. However, Jacob soon begins to distrust Meena upon growing suspicious of her ulterior motives. Meena seeks to placate Jacob's theories by claiming that she is different from David's previous fiancé Maya Stepney, a previously convicted paedophile who sexually abused Jacob a few years ago. Nevertheless, Jacob's suspicions remain aroused and he later confines to his girlfriend Leanna Cavanagh about his thoughts on Meena.
Eventually, Meena's dark side begins to emerge in Summer 2021. First she targets Princess, a dog that belonged to youngster Millie Tate after her parents Jamie Tate and Andrea along with grandmother Kim Tate allowed her to keep the pet, by deliberately locking her in a car during hot weather; Princess is rushed to hospital, but recovers thanks to local vet Paddy Kirk. At the same time, Meena makes an enemy of Jamie's girlfriend Dawn Taylor in light of the latter's issues with both her father Will and former boyfriend Billy Fletcher. Later on, Meena confines to fellow neighbour Diane Sugden about the death of her best-friend Nadine Butler and how the aftermath has deeply affected her. However, it is later revealed that Meena had actually killed Nadine in unknown circumstances.
Soon enough, Meena's true colours steadily emerge when she attempts to poison Jacob before stealing money at the Emmerdale festival and planning to frame him as the culprit. However, Leanna, who is due to leave the village with her father Liam, comes across Meena's secret and makes a run for it. Meena pursues Leanna and catches up with her at a bridge after the latter hurts her ankle. Cornering Leanna at the bridge, Meena admits to killing Nadine before proceeding to attack Leanna. Despite Leanna's efforts to fight back, Meena ultimately pushes her off the bridge and watches as Leanna falls to her death. As Leanna dies, Meena tauntingly leaves her behind before walking back to the village.
A few months later, Meena plans to kill David's new girlfriend Victoria Sugden after growing jealous of their relationship - and after Meena overheard David admitting his love for Victoria. During a trip away with the duo and several others, Meena sabotages a bridge in a plan to cause Victoria's death. This nearly works as Victoria falls for Meena's trap, although David alongside both Meena's sister Manpreet and her lover Charles Anderson get caught in the crossfire.
They all survive, but Meena attempts to drown Victoria whilst the latter is unconscious. But this fails and Meena is spotted by Andrea, who is also at the event and flees upon realizing Meena's true nature. Meena peruses Andrea just as a fire breaks out and causes many people to get trapped. Eventually, Meena causes Andrea to get injured and leaves her to die; Andrea later succumbs to her injuries and dies as a result of Meena's sabotage.
Following Andrea's death, Meena learns that David's ex-lover Priya - also Jai's sister - had survived the incident and fears that she may know the truth. Meena plans to kill Priya in hospital later on, but is forced to abandon the plan when one of the nurses abruptly walks in to wonder what Meena is doing; Meena claims she is Priya's friend and checking up on her before leaving. After learning that both Priya's former fiancé Al Chapman as well as Jai are each pondering on how the incident started, Meena decides to incriminate local businesswoman Kim Tate as the perpetuator behind Andrea's death upon learning of Kim and Andrea's feuding custody battle for Millie following Jamie's supposed demise in a car accident. Kim is arrested for Andrea's murder, but is later released without charge after proving to have an alibi.
Kim later realizes that Meena reported her and confronts her, threatening to make Meena "tick" if she dares cross Kim again. Meena seethes with rage while Kim takes delight in the potential conflict between the duo. Nevertheless, Meena is later relieved when the police decide to close the investigation on Andrea's death - thereby allowing Meena to once more get away with murder.
Sometime later, Meena appears to have moved on from David and Victoria upon befriending their neighbour Billy Fletcher. She continues to flirt with Billy and attempts to start a romance with him after claiming to her sister that she is over with David due to his relationship with Victoria. However, it quickly becomes clear that Meena still intends to settle her score with Victoria upon harbouring another plan to get rid of her for good. She soon begins feuding with both Victoria's roommate Amy Wyatt and Billy's ex-girlfriend Dawn Taylor when the respective duo begin clashing with her.
A few nights later, Meena comes to learn about a camera footage that has caught her attempt to kill Victoria. Eventually she finds it just as local resident, Ben Tucker, does so first - and in doing so Ben learns the truth about Meena and her attempt to kill Victoria. Thereupon she goes after him and Ben attempts to escape, but Meena ultimately knocks him out and gets hold of the footage; Ben begins pleading for his life, but Meena ignores him and proceeds to repeatedly attack him with a wooden oar - killing him as a result.
Ben's corpse is later discovered and his death becomes public knowledge, much to the shock of both his lover Aaron Livesy and the latter's younger sister Liv Flaherty. It then seemed as if Meena had gotten away with it again when Liv is implicated for Ben's murder, which leads to Liv getting arrested and later charged for the crime before being denied bail afterwards. This brings back a lot of memories for Aaron like when his ex-husband Robert Sugden had killed car salesman Lee Posner for raping Victoria, making Aaron decide to leave the village.
Meanwhile, David and Victoria go abroad and Meena starts seeing Billy. But then Billy chooses to break up with her as he now likes Dawn. This prompts Meena to lie and say she is pregnant but that doesn't work and he still leaves her for Dawn. Meena carries on with the lie and tells the villagers that she is pregnant with Billy's baby, but she needs to think of a way to get pregnant fast so when she sees a drunk Liam, she decides to get him even more drunk and then takes him to her bed where she takes advantage of him and uses him to hopefully get pregnant. When Liam wakes up, Meena tells him nothing happened and he didn't cheat on Leyla in the end. Thereafter Leyla sees him and Meena together outside her house and they both tell her he slept on her sofa and she believes them.
Although Meena has fooled most of the villagers that she is pregnant, Manpreet does not believe her. In hope of sympathy, Meena tells her about Nadine's "suicide" and this makes Manpreet more suspicious. She meets up with Nadine's sister, Carol, who tells Manpreet she always believed Meena killed her leaving Manpreet shocked. Meanwhile, Meena buys drugs and plans to plant them on Dawn. Manpreet finds this out and she confronts her behind the Woolpack but they are both unaware about Al starting a fire inside the Woolpack. While they are outside of it, Meena starts scaring Manpreet causing her to slap her in the face. She then picks up a glass bottle and smashes it walking slowly closer to Manpreet and before she can hurt her, the Woolpack explodes. Meena recovers in hospital quick so she goes to Manpreet's bedside in the hospital and is about to kill her but she wakes up and tells Meena she can't remember anything. But it is revealed that Manpreet does remember. Meena takes her home and when she sees Manpreet on her phone, she finds out Manpreet lied and is trying to expose her, so she stabs a needle into her neck and drugs her. She then tortures Manpreet and tells her she has a week to live, this was until she finds out that Wendy Posner who lives in the house is coming home so she puts Manpreet in the back of her boot and hides her inside a barn. Vinny Dingle and the other residents find out about the missing camera that had footage of Meena trying to kill Victoria, and they realise that someone killed Ben over that and they all start to believe Liv. Vinny sees Meena threatening Noah Dingle and decides to follow her in her car, he then finds Manpreet tied up in a barn so Meena comes up behind him and knocks him out with a shovel and is now planning to kill him too.
While Meena is gone, Manpreet tells Vinny about the four people she killed. Meena then starts forcing down vodka in Vinny to kill him with alcohol poisoning, but when Liam finds out she faked her pregnancy, she starts blackmailing him by saying if he tells anyone, she will tell everyone he raped her when it was the other way round. Meena invites Billy to the barn to kill him of dioxide poisoning with Manpreet and Vinny but instead, Liam shows up. Meena tells him to leave but he sees her trying to kill Manpreet and Vinny so he knocks her out with a plank of wood. After he saves them, they tell him that she killed Leanna.
Liam is thrown Into a fit of rage and starts manhunting. Yelling her name in rage, only to see that Meena has escaped the barn through a hatch. Liam runs into the forest to find her. Manpreet follows Liam to stop him from killing her or getting killed by her. After the villagers find out who Meena really is, Charles Anderson goes to hunt for Manpreet to save her. Meena is running in the forest, scared and panicking. Liam countlessly searches every section of the forest and screams her name and telling her she is a dead woman. Meena trips and falls down a rocky slope, only to find a large rock to kill Liam. Liam then stops and kneels into a pond in grief. Meena sneaks up to kill him, but two police officers spot her which makes her run away. As Charles is driving, he runs somebody over, believing it was Meena. Only to then he finds out it was Manpreet. Meena escapes the area in a van to Glasgow who’s name is “Tom”, completely unaware of who she is and why she needs a lift. She lies about her injuries and calls herself Manpreet.
At the hospital, Vinny tells DS Rogers that Meena was the one who killed Ben due to Manpreet telling him what Meena told her in the kidnapping siege. However, he didn’t believe what Vinny was saying as there was no physical evidence proving Meena killed anyone. Rogers mentioned that words from Vinny's perspective from Manpreet and not Meena would not be enough to prove murder and because of that, Liv is still on trail for Ben's murder which also meant she wouldn’t be released from custody immediately. DS Rogers then stated that Manpreet would need to regain consciousness in order for a solid case to be built as Meena directly confessed her crimes towards her. However, Manpreet’s condition pursues to the point to which she then goes into cardiac arrest, but the doctors were able to stabilise her. After Liam trashes Leanna's memorial garden in anger for what Meena did to her, he goes to village hardman Cain Dingle and asks for a gun so he can kill Meena as revenge for killing his daughter; Cain, though, does end up talking him out of it. Liv is upset that Meena has got away while she is still in prison for a crime she never committed. She starts crying in her cell and asks her cellmate, Mel, for alcohol, making her laugh. Liv then stands up for herself and tells Mel to shut up which leads to her brutally beating Liv up off-screen.
Meena later finds out that Billy and Dawn are getting married on Valentine's Day and she plans to make her revenge move then. A few days before the wedding, she breaks into Dawn's house and smashes up the place and writes the word "slut" on her wedding dress. Billy and Dawn both think her ex Alex Moore did it so Billy goes down to his house and they have a fight (mostly off-screen). After the police let Billy go, it is revealed to the audience that Meena has been staying at the church for a few nights. On Valentine's Day after Billy and Dawn got married, Meena first sees the limo that Billy was in the back seat of as Billy wanted to surprise Dawn with it, but Meena stops the limo and attacks the driver, steals the limo and kidnaps Billy with it as she puts him in the boot all off-screen. Also off-screen, she breaks into Dawn's house again, attacks Harriet Finch and locks Dawn's child Lucas in the shed and tells him to stay there. The limo arrives outside the church and Dawn gets in the back thinking everything is okay until she sees Meena is driving. Meena takes Dawn and Billy to a bridge, points a gun at them and tells Billy he has to decide either Dawn dies or he does. Before he can speak, Leyla drives by the scene so Meena shoots her. Billy knocks the gun out of her hand and Dawn hits Meena but she tells Dawn that if she kills her then she will never see Lucas again and she shows them a photo of Harriet lying on the floor knocked out. Meena escapes in the limousine and Dawn runs to the village, while Billy calls an ambulance for Leyla. Dawn tells Will everything, they call an ambulance for Harriet and they find Lucas safe and sound. Meena stops and sees the police so she gets out of the limousine and runs where she comes face to face with Liam again. Liam points a rake at her, chases her around the graveyard and right up to the bridge where she killed Leanna. Meena tells Liam that she shot Leyla and Liam throws the rake as he walks of to check on her but Meena tells him about how she enjoyed killing Leanna. In anger, Liam pushes Meena of the bridge and she hits her head on the same rock Leanna hit when she pushed her 7 months prior.
Manpreet slowly walks up to Liam in shock as she was walking by while it happened. DS Rogers stops in his car and sees it, Liam and Manpreet are questioned and lie saying it was self defence but when Meena wakes up in hospital and tells the police what Liam really did, he was arrested for attempted murder. The police let him go and then arrested Meena. Liam and Leyla find Meena's box where she keeps trophies of the victims she killed (Leanna's ring, Andrea and Ben's bracelets, the camera footage of Meena trying to drown Victoria, a dog toy from when she tried to kill Princess, a hair bobble from Nadine and also a newspaper article about her death). They took it all to the police and they charged Meena with some of her crimes. Meena phones Charles from prison and asks him to help her get forgiveness, he tries to help her for a few weeks but gives up. During Meena's plea hearing, she pleads guilty to kidnapping Manpreet and trying to kill her and Leyla but pleads not guilty to her murders.
The trial eventually concludes with a verdict and Meena seems confident that she'll get away with her crimes. However, she is shocked when the jury find her guilty for all her murders. She is further charged for Nadine's murder, after which Meena causes trouble and goes on a hypocritical rant over her crimes. This seemingly ends when Carol, seeking revenge for her sister's murder, attacks Meena by knocking her unconscious before she is apprehended by security. Manpreet promptly rushes to her sister's aid, only for Meena to emerge and take her sister hostage in an attempt to escape prison. She nearly succeeds until the police hold her at gunpoint and Manpreet overpowers her. Meena then attempts to goad her sister in killing her by confessing to yet another murder - that of their late father; Meena had killed her and Manpreet's father with morphine overdose. Manpreet is horrified by the revelation of her sister's admission to killing their father and initially considers going through with finishing her off, but ultimately refuses upon stating that she is nothing like her; Meena reacts badly to this as the police take her into custody and Manpreet watches on.
A few days later, Meena appeared in court to await her sentencing. She expresses disappointment that nobody in the village has turned up, as they've decided to not give Meena the satisfaction of letting her mess with them. However, Manpreet turns up just as the judge prepares to hand Meena her sentence after recounting the extent of her villainous nature. Thereupon the judge sentences Meena to life imprisonment, with 25 years coming in each of her murder charges. In response, Meena reacts badly to this and starts to become hysterical as the judge orders for her to be taken down. As Meena is taken out of the court, she notices Manpreet in attendance and attempts to get her attention; Manpreet, however, ignores her and merely watches as Meena is taken out of court - seeing that the sister she once knew had gone and that Meena has become an evil monster beyond redemption. Manpreet then leaves the court in triumph knowing Meena's reign of terror has come to an end.
Later on, Meena screams and cries inside her cell for attention - begging to not be ignored.
