“ | That's Megalodontia... Its hunger knows no bounds. I'd say more, but I'll just shut my trap and let you focus on staying OUT of that thing's trap! | „ |
~ Mr. Grizz on the Megalodontia. |
The Megalodontia is a supporting antagonist in the video game Splatoon 3, being one of the main antagonists of Salmon Run: Next Wave. A titanic and hideous King Salmonid, the Megalodontia emerges from the ocean when it picks up the scent of Grizzco workers on its turf, attacking them with its Salmonid kin to drive them off. Its colossal maw allows it to completely devour any unlucky souls caught in its attack, even other Salmonids.
Appearence[]
The Megalodontia is a colossal, shark-like Salmonid covered in iridescent grey scales, dwarfing even the mighty Cohozuna and Horrorboros. It has bizarre blue lips, a blue mohawk-like fin on its head, a shark-like fin on its back, as well as pupil-less yellow eyes. Uniquely for a Salmonid, the Megalodontia's teeth are rather neat, possibly due to the humongous orthodontic braces it wears. The Megalodontia wears green pants and has a fishing net, complete with plastic buoys and tires, wrapped around its midsection. On its back is a huge red pimple that's covered in a white bandaid.
Gameplay[]
Triggering[]
Like other King Salmonids, the Megalodontia spends most of its time sleeping under the ocean. However, as Grizzco employees continue intruding onto Salmonid territory, it will begin to pick up their scent until it decides to emerge to drive them off. This leaving of scent is indicated by a player's Salmometer, which when filled increases the chance of a King Salmonid spawning by 25%. The King Salmonid that spawns is dependent on map and indicated by the Salmometer's shape.
Attacks[]
The Megalodontia spends most of its time hiding beneath the stage, targeting a player which is indicated by a cyan crosshair on them. The area in which it will emerge is indicated by a huge cyan marker which follows the player for 45 seconds until it stops and the Megalodontia emerges, killing anything still in the area. The Megalodontia will then linger for a few seconds before re-targeting another player.
Strategy[]
While the Megalodontia's shy tendencies and bulkiness make it harder to take down normally, it possesses a glaring weakness that allows player to deal massive amounts of damage to it: the huge red pimple on its back, which serves as a weak spot. As the Megalodontia's back will always face the last spot it attacked, players should take note of previous strikes to deal more damage to it. Additionally, the Megalodontia's attack will kill anything, even Boss Salmonids, that fail to escape it. Thus, targeted players should lure it into dense hordes of Boss Salmonids, allowing the Megalodontia to finish them all off and giving the team more Golden Eggs to damage it with. The Megalodontia's bite will deal significant damage to the other King Salmonids during the Triumvirate boss fight, making it a valuable tool for dealing with them. Players using Chargers should try to aim at its pimple in a manner that their shots graze its body before hitting the pimple, allowing a whopping 270% damage to be dealt.
Trivia[]
- The Megalodontia's name is derived from "Megalodon", a genus of gigantic extinct shark, and "Macrodontia", which is a medical condition for oversized teeth.
- Along with the Slammin' Lid, the Megalodontia is the only Salmonid that can damage others of its kind with normal attacks.
- Curiously, the Megalodontia is addressed with proper pronouns unlike the other King Salmonids, implying that it could be a unique Salmonid.
- The Megalodontia is often referred to as Joe by the community thanks to a post by the game's Japanese Twitter account referring to it as such, being a mistranslation of its Japanese name "jō", which means "Jaws".
- With 65,000 HP, the Megalodontia has the most health of any Salmonid in the game.
