Megalon is a large cockroach/beetle based kaiju controlled by the Seatopians and the main antagonist of the 1973 Godzilla film Godzilla vs. Megalon and 2023 short of the same name.

It was portrayed by Hideto Date.

Personality[]

Though capable of working as a team with other kaijus such as Gigan just fine and displays sadistic side as reflected by his preference to torment his foes rather than defeating them outright, Megalon is sometimes considered as one of the least intelligent Toho kaijus, easily manipulated through external stimuli; he follows Jet Jaguar out of sheer curiously and throws tantrums upon losing sight of it. Even his battle tactics are rather lacking, using his many powerful abilities sparingly and enjoying tackling his opponents head-on (a predictable move as they would simply have to sidestep out of the way to evade it). Nevertheless, he remains loyal to Seatopians who worships him as their guardian deity.

In 2023 short Godzilla vs. Megalon by contrast, Megalon is much clever and confident in confronting foes on his own. More than once, he successfully creates an opening to deliver precise blows on Godzilla, forcing the King of Monster to counter his assaults every single time. Although his decision to go all-out after the merger with his Seatopian priestess ended up become his undoing, Megalon nonetheless managed to inflict significant blow which resulted in Godzilla fainting from injuries he sustained.

Biography[]

Showa Era[]

Godzilla vs. Megalon[]

Megalon was the guardian of Seatopia, an underwater kingdom, that suffered from the nuclear testing and pollution of the people in the surface world. They summoned Megalon to make the people pay by attacking Japan. The monster began wreaking chaos throughout the country, but was soon opposed by a robot known as Jet Jaguar. The Seatopians had stolen the robot previously to aid Megalon in destroying the surface world, but its owner had freed it from their control.

Jet Jaguar was able to outmatch its foe and the Seatopians asked the Nebulans to send Gigan to help Megalon. The two were able to overpower Jet Jaguar and were close to destroying the robot, but Godzilla arrived and helped the robot drive the two away. Gigan fled back into space and Megalon burrowed back underground, where it stayed ever since.

Reiwa Era[]

Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse[]

In this prequel novel to the 2017 anime film Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Megalon appears in Africa between February and December 2012, where he devastates and causes chaos in the western region of the continent before disappearing for almost a decade. In 2022, he ravages South Africa, causing an estimated 300 million-400 million people to flee Africa and seek refuge in Europe or the Middle East.

Godzilla: Project Mechagodzilla[]

In this sequel novel to Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse, the giant cockroach/beetle reappears once more in the year 2029, and he causes destruction upon India and Pakistan. Megalon then moves to Philippines, and later Japan, where he broke through the Japanese-American defense line to come ashore at Blue Beach, Okinawa.

There, he fights the guardian monster King Caesar who kills Megalon in a violent fight before returning to his slumber.

Godzilla vs. Megalon (2023)[]

In the sequel of Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, Megalon is awakened from his slumber by a Seatopian priestess and even had her people transferring remaining energy of Gigan Rex whose remains brought to his shrine all as part of preparation to invade surface world. Entering a military facility near the city where Godzilla confronts JSDF, said priestess, using her special pendant, subdues military personnel surrounding her before signaling the kaiju to drill his way up to the surface there, demolishing a significant part of the facility in the process. The insectoid kaiju then subsequently makes a short work on his oppositions before entering the city.

Laying waste upon the city, Megalon inevitably cross-paths with Godzilla as night comes. He commences the duel by staggering the King of Monsters with a volley of Geothermal Napalms before sending him flying with concussive force-enhanced ground pound, obliterating the city block the latter standing at. Evading his atomic ray, Megalon responds with Beast Killer Light Ray, staggering Godzilla long enough to subdue him with another concussive force-enhanced blow. When he repeats such tactic however, Godzilla evens the ground by dispelling the blast with his nuclear pulse and then channeling atomic energy of same amount of power to repel Megalon. Both kaijus exchanges energized blows at one another until Megalon finally repels Godzilla with point-blank Geothermal Napalms upon foreseeing their duel getting nowhere this way. But King of Monsters doesn't make things easy as he propels himself to the air via. concentrated nuclear pulse from his dorsal fins like thrusters thus allowing him to perform flying kick at the insectoid kaiju. Not taking any chances, Godzilla grabs Megalon by the horn and shatters it with another nuclear pulse channeled through his grip, all while enduring the latter's point-blank beast killer light ray and parrying his enhanced blows.

Megalon is far from defeated. Upon his merger with his Seatopian priestess, he decides to go all out by charging at Godzilla with his combined drill hands pointed forward. The drill slowly yet steadily grinds through King of the Monsters's hide, forcing Godzilla to assume burning mode and fire his white spiral atomic breath in a sweeping motion at last moments, pulverizing Megalon's lower half along with unfortunate ruined buildings behind him which consumed by inferno.

Powers and Abilities[]

Mobility[]

Megalon can fly through the air at speeds of Mach 3, drill through the ground at Mach 3, and travel underwater at Mach 4. In addition, Megalon can use his spring-like legs to jump high into the air and is able to travel 10 kilometers at a time using this method. Megalon can combine his abilities to fly and jump to essentially "surf" on air.

Beast Killer Light Ray[]

Also known as Laser Beast Killer Beam, Beast Killer Laser Beam, Lightning Bolts, and Horn Lightning, Beast Killer Light Ray is Megalon's signature ability where he projects a yellow electrical lightning beam from his horn strong enough to melt or detonate vehicles and destroy man-made structures. His horn glows in yellow before firing it just as Godzilla's dorsal fins glowing before firing his atomic breath. The manner it depicted mostly with stock footage of King Ghidorah's gravity beams from Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster and Godzilla vs. Gigan. In 1992-3 Godzilla, King of the Monsters manga, its firepower is sufficient enough to kill Neo Biollante with just a single shot.

In 2023 short Godzilla vs. Megalon, the technique proved strong enough not just to subdue Godzilla's durable hide, but also fry him through prolonged exposure.

Geothermal Napalm[]

Also known as Geothermal Flame Napalm Bullets, Geothermal Flame Napalm, and simply Napalm, Megalon can fire volatile bolts from his mouth. He used them to great effect in his attack on Tokyo, knocked Jet Jaguar out of the sky, and quickly created a ring of flames around Godzilla and Jet Jaguar. Some promotional stills for the film depicted him firing a spiral light beam from his mouth instead. In Kodansha's Godzilla, King of the Monsters manga, the projectiles resemble fireballs but otherwise display similar effects. In Godzilla: Domination!, they resemble naval mines, only detonating if walked over by an enemy or launched directly at them. In 2023 short Godzilla vs. Megalon, Megalon's Geothermal Napalms are dart-shaped, can be fired with great accuracy, and possess sufficient firepower to deliver preemptive strikes against kaijus around Godzilla's caliber.

In Godzilla: Great Monster Battle, he performs a stronger variant of the ability which lasts longer, is wider, and produces taller flame spires called High Temperature Geothermal Napalm.

Drill arms[]

Also referred as Double Drill. Both Megalon's arms end with drill-like appendage which can either be used in hand-to-hand combat akin to lance or rapier, or combined to form a single rotating drill which allows him to burrow underground.

In Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee and Godzilla: Save the Earth, Megalon can discharge purple electricity from his drills, making for powerful energy punches in Save the Earth, or Energy Arc in Destroy All Monsters Melee. He can moreover propel this energy from his drill as a spherical projectile, called Advancing Energy Arc in Destroy All Monsters Melee and simply Energy Arc in Save the Earth.

In 2023 short Godzilla vs. Megalon, Megalon can channel concussive force through his drill arms which devastating enough to reduce a significant part of the city into a huge crater. If analysis made by the military who observed their duel is to be believed, the technique worked in the principle not unlike Godzilla's atomic energy-enchanced melee strikes hence how the insectoid kaiju able to parry the latter. As with in his previous appearance, Megalon can combine his drill arms into a rotating drill which, in conjunction of merger with his Seatopian priestess, would allow him to pulverize Godzilla with some difficulty had he failed to assume burning form and cleave him into half in time.

Telepathy through Seatopian Pendant and Host Absorption[]

In 2023 short Godzilla vs. Megalon, Megalon is able to form a telepathic bond with an individual through a special pendant, granting them the role of his priest or priestess. It is through said pendant the Seatopian priestess awakens the dormant Megalon once their preparations are completed, warning the insectoid kaiju about oppositions he would face upon his emergence at outside world and attack accordingly, and if needed, merges with him for power boost.

Trivia[]

  • Even though Godzilla vs. Megalon was a critical and financial failure, Megalon remains a popular character in the Godzilla franchise, being a playable character in multiple games, including Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, Godzilla: Save the Earth, and Godzilla: Unleashed.
  • Megalon is one of the three Godzilla kaiju villains from the Showa era to never reappear in a later film, the other two being Gabara and Titanosaurus.
  • Megalon is one of the few kaiju villains in the Showa era to survive a battle against Godzilla.
  • Originally, Megalon was suppose to make his debut in the unmade film Godzilla vs. the Space Monsters: Earth Defense Directive. In the film, Megalon, along with Gigan and King Ghidorah, would be the pawns of an evil alien brain called Mako in its conquest to rule the universe and fought against Godzilla, Anguirus, and a stone statue kaiju called Majin Tuol to take over the Earth.
    • Following the film's cancellation, Megalon was selected to be the villain for the film Jet Jaguar vs. Megalon. However, Toho feared that Jet Jaguar did not have enough value to guarantee the film's success, so Godzilla and Gigan were added into the film in the process.
