Mel is a major character in Despicable Me 3 and a supporting character in Despicable Me 4, the third and fourth main installments in Illumination's Despicable Me franchise.
He is one of the loyal Minions to former supervillain Felonious Gru, who, after learning that Gru would not send him nor any of the other Minions back to villainy, starts a rebellion against Gru that quits working for him and attempts to live on their own. After being incarcerated for trespassing, Mel starts to reminisce about him and Gru's happy moments together, and escapes prison to go back to Gru, officially redeeming himself.
He, like the rest of the Minions, was voiced by Pierre Coffin.
Appearance[]
He resembles the classic minion within the series: a yellow Tic-Tac like creature with grey goggles over his one eye. He is shown to have black sideburns on his head and wears blue overalls.
Personality[]
He is similar to the other Minions, but he is intelligent and desires to be villains once more. On the other hand, he is also emotional when it comes to his bond with Gru.
History[]
Despicable Me 3[]
Mel is the head of the Minions in the plot of the film. At one point in the story, Mel contacts Gru, prompting Gru to head down to the lab. Both Gru and the Minions feel thrilled to hear that Gru has lost his job at AVL. Nevertheless, Gru turns down their hopes of returning to a life of villainy. In response, Mel and the Minions decide to go against Gru, choosing to quit and leave with the gang, leaving behind two Minions, Dave and Jerry. On their journey, they encounter Fritz, who is Dru’s butler, and he inquires about Gru’s whereabouts. Mel refuses to assist him because he is still upset with Gru for not wanting to embrace their former villainous ways, leaving Fritz confused.
The following morning, the Minions, except for Mel, start feeling worn out and hungry while Mel continues on his way. They stumble upon some pizza, which they chase after, only to find themselves inside a studio while trying to avoid police capture. The Minions end up participating in a Singing Contest where they perform "Papa Mama Loca Pipa," a Minionese version of "Modern Major General" from the Gilbert and Sullivan opera "Pirates of Penzance," which helps them win the contest. However, the police arrive and take Mel and the Minions to jail.
While in Prison, possibly in Texas, Mel and the Minions become the leaders and instill fear in the other inmates. Mel becomes nostalgic and emotional when he recalls fond times spent with Gru while taking a shower. He begins to mold the mashed potatoes on his plate, reminiscent of those memories, as the Minions and other prisoners eat. Later that night, the Minions decide to break out of Prison to find Gru and patch things up with him. Using various items found in the prison, including toilets, laundry machines, and uniforms, they build a massive plane with all of the Minions as passengers. Mel successfully pilots the plane, but they inadvertently leave one Minion behind.
The next morning, the Minions on the plane enjoy the ride while some feel bored. Mel, feeling drowsy, unexpectedly comes across Gru, Lucy, and Dru. Spotting Gru, he redirects the plane in pursuit of him toward Hollywood. Even though he does not fully understand Gru’s reason for heading to Hollywood or Balthazar Bratt’s evil plans to destroy it, Mel notices the abundant giant gum in the city. With the assistance of the other Minions, they heroically exit the plane and use everything they can find to destroy the gum while Gru battles Balthazar Bratt and his massive robot. After successfully blowing up the gum with dynamite, they finally reunite with Gru, restoring their relationship and returning to their family dynamic.
Once Gru asks the Minions and Dru to settle in for the night, Dru moves into Gru's house with Mel and the Minions. They decide to return to villainy, inspired by Dru. Mel and the other Minions remove their overalls while Dru takes the wheel of Gru's Airship, replacing Gru's emblem with a "D" to "uphold the family tradition." Both Gru and Lucy are surprised and choose to pursue them after giving them a brief five-minute head start.
Despicable Me 4[]
Mel appears as one of the five genetically enhanced Mega Minions who were hired by the AVL (Anti-Villain League) to save the city from any villainous threats. Despite this, Mel, as well as the rest of the Mega Minions, appears to be extremely incompetent in their job, rarely ever being sucessful in saving the city.
