She would assist Abby in enacting revenge against Joel Miller, but would soon regret participating in the event and was left horrified of what Abby was capable of. Mel and Owen's relationship would become turbulent due to his feelings for Abby, and were among the many left dead in Ellie's crusade in getting revenge on Anderson.
She was voiced and motion-captured by Ashly Burch, who also voiced Miss Pauling in Team Fortress 2, Ash Graven and Stella in Final Space, White Pumpkin in Minecraft: Story Mode.
Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known about Mel's past, but she was a member of the Fireflies stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was under the tutelage of Dr. Jerry Anderson in the medical field, and became friends with his daughter Abby and fellow Fireflies Owen Moore, Manny Alvarez, Nora Harris, Nick, Jordan and Leah. After Dr. Anderson's death by the hands of Joel, the Fireflies disbanded due to not having leadership since Marlene was killed by Joel as well. Mel and the survivors would travel to Seattle where they were accepted into the Washington Liberation Front by Isaac Dixon. Over the years, Mel's friendship with Abby became strained, as the latter became one of Isaacc's top "Scar" killers and became obsessive with wanting revenge against Joel. It's also possible that the relationship declined once Mel began a relationship with Owen, as he had previously dated Abby. Despite their friction, Mel believed in avenging Dr. Anderson's death, but was focused on her romantic relationship with Owen.
The Last of Us Part II[]
With Isaac's permission, Abby formed a group to travel to Jackson after learning that Joel's brother Tommy was there. Mel accompanied them despite revealing her pregnancy to Owen, who told Abby before she went off on her search. Abby later returned with Tommy and Joel, and told Mel to place a tourniquet on Joel's leg so she could torture him. Mel and the group witnessed Abby brutally torture him until his adopted daughter Ellie arrived, which caused the others to hold her down. Owen spared Ellie and Tommy despite's Mel's protest, believing that they should tie loose ends. Abby agreed to leave, and the group left Ellie and Tommy to live to return back to Seattle.
Returning to Seattle, Mel was left horrified by the incident, feeling regret in taking part of Joel's death and saw Abby as nothing but a sadistic individual. She started to distance herself from Abby, but received it on the other hand from Owen, who had pushed himself away from them and started to question his loyalty to the liberation front. Later on, Mel was assigned to travel to Isaac's forward operating base with Abby and Manny despite her pregnancy. During their travel, the trio were attacked by the Seraphites, and were forced to hold their own against the cult and the infected. A W.L.F. patrol arrived and brought them to the base, and she was later interrogated by Isaac on Abby's whereabouts.
Mel then traveled to the aquarium to meet with Owen, and when Abby asked for help for Yara's shattered arm, told her that they would need medical supplies to amputate it. The following day after saving Yara, Mel told Abby that she was leaving to Santa Barbara with Owen as long as she didn't come, believing that Abby was faking her care for Lev and Yara to appease her former boyfriend. She then told Abby that she was a terrible person since she had broke many bounds and killed countless people, and advised that the best thing to do was to get far away from Lev and Yara for their sake. When Lev left to Seraphites' island to speak to his mother, Mel questioned Abby, but Anderson lamented that she was trying to do the right thing.
Left with Owen in the aquarium, the two argued about Abby since the latter wanted to go rescue her, but the former believed that she was already dead. The argument was interrupted by Ellie, who traveled to Seattle to find and get revenge on Abby. When held at gunpoint and asked for Abby's location, Mel was willing to do so, but Owen attempted to intervene before being killed by Ellie. Mel then tried to kill Ellie with her knife, but was disarmed and stabbed in the neck, dying alongside her unborn child. Her corpse was later found by Abby, who decided to get revenge for her and Owen's deaths.
Personality[]
Mel was a loyal friend and ally. While kind to her friends, she was cold-hearted to enemies, since even though Abby only wanted to murder Joel, Mel encouraged that they also execute his brother, Tommy, and adopted daughter, Ellie; this displayed she had a ruthless tendency, however, there was perhaps a pragmatic rationale - since the WLFs themselves were on a mission for revenge, leaving "loose ends" would leave them similarly subject to vengeance from their target's loved ones. Despite her situational callousness, upon witnessing the brutality with which Abby used to murder Joel, and the murder itself, left Mel horrified and disgusted, which caused to end her friendship with Abby and erect a wall between them afterwards.
She was incredibly insecure and jealous, since she never could get over her boyfriend, Owen's, former relationship with Abby, and often felt overshadowed by the combat prowess of their group's leader; although, her insecurities were not unfounded, since indeed Owen still harbored feelings for Abby, and cheated on Mel, even though she was pregnant with their child. Regardless of reasonable suspicions, her jealousy and insecurity would drive her towards unreasonable and overly emotional actions. Despite being in her second then third trimester of pregnancy, she would still volunteer for potentially extremely dangerous patrols and missions, just to avoid appearing weaker or inferior to Abby.
Ultimately, Mel's emotional attachment to Owen is what led to her death, since if she didn't attack Ellie in an attempt to "protect" Owen, then she wouldn't have been killed, nor would Owen attempt to retaliate only to also die by Ellie's hands, thus Mel's instability caused the deaths of her lover Owen, herself, and her unborn child. Although, ironically, had Abby allowed the additional deaths of Tommy and Ellie, then none of them would have suffered consequences for their participation in Abby's revenge, thus Mel's panicked pragmatism during the murder wasn't as irrational as her later decisions.
