Biography[]
Mel Bernstein was a corrupt narcotics detective working for Miami drug lord Frank Lopez. Mel served as both Frank's bodyguard as well as informer in order to protect him from the police. At one point he had a running with Tony Montana, Frank's new assassin.
When Tony Montana had a falling out with Frank, due to doing business with Alejandro Sosa behind his back and trying to steal his wife Elvira, Frank hired Mel to intimidate Tony so he can stay put. Mel appeared before of Tony in the Babylon Club and Tony recognized him but told him that he is clean with Mel reminding him of his killings of Emilio Rebenga and some Colombian drug-dealers threatening to take him in if he doesn't cooperate. They both sat down and Tony immediately asked what his price was, with Mel writing the number and telling him what he can do for him. At that moment, Frank Lopez also entered the club with Elvira and Tony went to confront her. Mel soon left the club but Tony understood that he was working for Frank as no one else knew about him killing Rebenga. Later that night an assassination attempt orchestrated by Frank and Mel was made against Tony, who was wounded but managed to kill the assassins and escape. Mel and Frank thought they succeeded and went on Frank's office relaxed but to their surprise Tony entered the room along his Manny Rivera and Chi-Chi. Both Frank and Mel pretended that they didn't know what had happened. Tony started to accuse Frank, with Mel refusing to take sides. Frank was forced to admit that he was behind the hit but Tony didn't spare his life and ordered Manny to kill him. Tony then got his attention on Mel who was confidently sitting in his chair. Mel tried to play cool and put all the blame to Frank, but Tony didn't fall for this and shot him in the gut. Desperate, Mel tried to negotiate for his life but Tony shot him in the chest killing him.
