Villain Overview

Because I signed my name on it, Cole.
~ Melanie to Cole, revealing her villainous nature.
That's impossible! He's a virgin! He has to be!
~ Melanie upon seeing the ritual has failed.

Melanie is the secondary antagonist of The Babysitter film series. She is the deuteragonist of the 2017 horror-comedy The Babysitter and the main antagonist of its 2020 sequel The Babysitter: Killer Queen. She is the former best friend and love-interest turned arch-nemesis of Cole Johnson.

She was portrayed by Emily Alyn Lind, who also played Snakebite Andi in Doctor Sleep and Grace Goodwin in Prep & Landing: Naughty vs Nice.

Personality

In the original film, Melanie was Cole Johnson's best friend and one of the only if any to not pick on him at any chance and was often seen showing signs of liking Cole despite his unpopularity and dorky appearance. She later shared her first kiss with him when they were hiding in her house from Bee. When Cole and Melanie shared a romantic moment that finally helped Cole finally stand up and decide to end Bee once and for all.

In the sequel, two years later, Melanie initially appears to think of Cole the same way but is shown to disregard his cries from the night he was hunted down and nearly murdered several times. Melanie and Cole still maintain their relationship and despite the build-up in the first film, Cole and Melanie are only friends with Melanie dating a jock named Jimmy.

The pair still share conversations and Melanie even reassures Cole about how everyone takes some kind of medicine and that it is normal to not be normal. The two later share another kiss during a makeout game on a boathouse at the lake where it appears Melanie and Cole still share repressed feelings for each other.

However, her motives are revealed to be entirely fake as she reveals her true nature revealing she had signed the same blood deal with the devil that Bee and the original cult had been apart of and reveals her shallow motive to betray someone who was in love with her, she simply wanted to increase her online following.

Throughout the rest of the movie, Melanie, Jimmy, Diego, and the original cult members except Bee pursue Cole to kill and get his blood to finally complete the cult showing who she was using Cole for years for this moment. She showed no remorse for Cole and only wanted to complete the ritual to obtain what she really wanted. When she is dying, she insults Cole stating it to be impossible for anyone to ever wanna have sex with Cole which caused the blood in the ritual to be tainted.

Biography

The Babysitter

In the first film, Melanie is seen to be Cole's best and only friend as she provides him with companionship after he is bullied by Jeremy who goes to school with them and is also Cole's neighbor. Melanie mentions her parents' divorce which was mostly her dad, Juan, and how her dad is more willing to show off his fancy car and his ego then offer her any time other when he needs to.

She talks to Cole as she waits to get picked up in front of school on a Friday after school and the pair enjoy each other's company before Juan shows up in his car where he purposely revs the engine to attract attention to his car as he picks up Melanie and they drive off.

That same night, after Cole is believed to be in bed by his babysitter and close friend named Bee, Cole mentions Bee and Melanie encourages Cole to go see what she gets into when she is alone. Cole agrees and tells her he will call her back when he sees something interesting happen.

Later that night, Cole witnesses Bee and her friends kill a member of their group, revealing themselves to be Satanists. After they find out Cole knows about it, they attempt to kill him but Allison is incapacitated John, Sonya, and Max end up being killed by Cole, who is then pursued by Bee. Cole runs to Melanie's house and the latter is home alone. After avoiding Bee who had entered the house to find Cole, the pair go upstairs and hide in the bathroom where Cole reassures her and apologizes for bringing her into the situation as she states she believes him as he tells her to call the police and to stay in the room until it's completely safe. Before he leaves, the two share their first kiss and Cole finds himself enough courage to believe in himself to defeat Bee once and for all as he leaves Melanie to call the police.

After Cole confronts Bee back at the house and burns the book she used for the Satanic ritual, Bee to panic and attempt to put out the fire. Cole hijacks Melanie's dad's car as he proceeds to drive it into his house right onto where Bee is in the living room attempting to put the flames out as the two share one last goodbye as Cole emerges from the wreckage as the police and authorities arrive as Cole tells his parents he doesn't need a babysitter anymore as he sits blankless on the curb.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen

Two years after the events of the first film, Cole's story about what happened on that night is not believed by anyone including his parents who think he is not mentally well and is crazy and Melanie who says something like that just couldn't happen. Despite his nature, Melanie and Cole have remained close friends but nothing more as Melanie is shown to be dating a jock named Jimmy who appears somewhat jealous of Cole but is still friendly to him and Jimmy's friends Diego and Boom Boom.

After a visit with the school nurse/therapist, Melanie reassures Cole about how everyone is on some kind of medicine and that it is completely normal. Around that same time, Cole's parents get more and more worried that Cole is losing his mind due to his obscure story and continued mention saying the night really happened when no one else found any proof of it occurring including Bee not being found and everyone Cole had managed to fend off gone. That same day on Friday, Cole luckily spots a brochure for a psych ward that his parents intend to send him to help him suppress the memory from the night and until he is mentally well.

At school, Cole is called to the office just before the final bell but Melanie who Cole had told about the ward tells him to sneak away with her, Jimmy, Diego, and Boom Boom to head to a lake party with the school. During this time, Cole continues to fall for Melanie and also appears to be visibly weirded out by the new girl in their grade named Phoebe where a rumor that she killed her parents had risen from her first day and when she arrives at the lake after finding her old stuffed animal with directions to the lake on it.

At a boathouse during the same night, Melanie, Cole, and the other three gather to play seven minutes in heaven using the closet of the house. Melanie and Cole share a passionate kiss in the closet but their moment is cut short when Boom Boom reveals that time is up. As Cole returns, Jimmy and Diego suddenly begin to mention the blood cult, and if it really happened like he said it did as Melanie tells them to stop pestering him.

However, Cole suddenly turns pale when Melanie mentions the Devil's book, a key detail from the night he had never told anyone else as he worriedly questions Melanie on how she knew as she reassures him that he told her but he begins to put the pieces together. Suddenly Melanie slashes Boom Boom's throat with a boat hook and collects her blood as herself, Jimmy, and Diego are all revealed to be new members of the same blood cult that had terrorized Cole in the original.

When Cole appears betrayed and upset, Melanie reveals she used it to increase her popularity and that Cole was the key to doing so and completing the ritual which would grant her what she wanted in fame as Cole attempts to flee, he is stopped as the original cult members excluding Bee show up as John, Max, Allison, and Sonya all enter and appear to be resurrected and receive another chance two years later as the new and expanded cult group surround Cole. Melanie reveals they must mix the blood of the sacrifice and the innocent who they intend to be Cole.

Suddenly, Phoebe shows up asking for gas for her jet ski and sees what had happened as she leaves after excusing herself. This momentary distraction allows Cole to throw an object and hit Allison as he flees to the roof of the boathouse as Max who had developed a respect for Cole in the first film eagerly chases after him as Melanie and the others go outside the boathouse to watch as Cole manages to make it on the jet ski with Phoebe and the pair race off as Melanie looks on and orders them to get Cole.

After initially believing Phoebe to be in the cult, it's revealed she is actually not as bad as he appearance gives off and that the accident that killed her parents occurred when she forgot her favorite stuffed animal and her and her babysitter were going to retrieve unaware that her parents had got it for her and the two cars crashed which instantly killed her parents. Cole explains the whole situation and Phoebe believes him as the pair plan to escape them and make it to sunrise when the ritual will expire with time.

Also during this time, Melanie and Cole's dads, Juan and Archie go searching for their kids with Juan mostly being upset for Melanie taking his car and not really about her safety.

Phoebe and Cole manage to kill Sonya when a flying surfboard decapitates her, Allison gets trapped in a narrow rock wedge and the pair pull on her to decapitate her, and then finally kill Max when Cole sprays him with silly string and then throws a lit lighter on him which causes him to fall into the water after he tried to attack them on the speed boat. The pair then shred his face using the boat's motor.

The two take shelter at Phoebe's parents' former cabin where the two hide in the basement where the weapons for hunting were stashed. There, the two share comfort as Phoebe confides in Cole about how her parents died and the two begin to kiss before they have sex with Cole losing his virginity therefore taking his innocence away. During this time, Jimmy and Diego back off their pursuit of Cole and as a result disintegrate in front of Melanie and John after they attempted to walk away from the deal.

Melanie and John are found by Archie and Juan as Juan yells at Melanie for taking his car and Archie urgently asks where Cole is and Melanie says she will take them to him as she states he had gone crazy and he believed she was trying to kill him. Archie believes this due to Cole's nature about events that never happened as John and Juan joke with each other.

At the house, the pair are startled when Melanie, Archie, John, and Juan arrive and orders Cole to come upstairs and come home when the pair use a code that was on the stuffed animal Phoebe found placed in her locker and the two arm themselves as they enter upstairs. When Cole spots Melanie, he appears angry and tells his dad to get away from her as she uses her fake character and professes that she loves him.

Cole knowing her intentions attempts to shoot John down with a crossbow but he misses as Archie yells at Cole for trying to kill him unaware of who John really is. John mocks Cole for missing but is unaware that the chandelier above him is collapsing as it falls and crashes on him killing him.

Cole rushes to lead his dad and Phoebe out as Melanie attempts to pursue him once more but is stopped by her dad who states she is in big trouble for going behind his back when she attacks and murders him using a machete to chop both his arms off. After Cole sets Phoebe to go off and hide, he confronts and hugs his dad but is knocked out after his dad injects him with a needle as he passes out and is brought back to Archie's car.

Melanie has set up a ritual among the shoreline with fire as she states Cole will come back for her and she is insulted by Phoebe which makes Melanie upset and she snaps at her. Cole manages to wake up after his dad stopped to get gas and he steals the car and leaves his dad behind to stop Melanie from hurting Phoebe.

Back at the lake, Cole returns and finally confronts Melanie and agrees to let them use his blood and kill him if Phoebe gets to live. As Cole sits down on the throne, Melanie reveals one more surprise as Bee suddenly emerges from the water as Cole appears wordless and shocked as Phoebe recognizes her and it's revealed Bee was Phoebe's babysitter that was in the crash with her parents and that she began her deal with the devil in exchange to save Phoebe's life for her soul which explained why Phoebe survived the initial wreck.

Cole appears defeated as he is restrained and his blood is drawn and is mixed with Boom Booms as suddenly Max, John, Sonya, and Allison are all resurrected once more as they all prepare to drink the blood mix. However, Bee does not drink any and after the other five do so, they all feel sick and it's then revealed that Bee had arranged everything in this order to get Cole and Phoebe together and that the night with Cole and his love for her had changed her for the better as she plotted to end the cult once and for all.

Bee then smirks and reveals Cole isn't so innocent anymore as the others realize he and Phoebe had sex as Max appears proud and the others in pure disbelief that anyone would have sex with Cole especially Melanie. John, Max, Sonya, and Allison begins to melt and disintegrate as does Melanie soon after as Cole and Phoebe share a look of relief as Melanie collapses and vanishes into ash and flames finally killing her.
