Melanie Merchant is an antagonist in the WB/CW show Supernatural, serving as the main antagonist of the episode Provenance.
Hiding beneath what appeared to be a sweet and innocent little girl was in reality a bloodthirsty murderer, a vicious serial killer who's evil intent lingered even long after she died, becoming a ultra hostile ghost hellbent on continuing her killing spree.
She was portrayed by Jodelle Ferland, who also played Emily in the episode Golden Time, Alessa Gillespie and her counterparts in the Silent Hill film, Aggie Prenderghast in ParaNorman, Lillith Sullivan in Case 39, Bree Tanner in Twilight: Eclipse, Michael Rollins in The Messengers and Audrey in Revenge Porn.
History[]
In the early 1900s, a young girl named Melanie was found in her home with her entire family slaughtered. Believed to be the sole survivor, the murders were never solved, and Melanie would eventually be adopted by Isaiah Merchant. While Isaiah was a strict father, he was nowhere near as awful as the local legends made him out to be, and he did try to be a supportive family man. He raised Melanie as his own ever since, but some time later, the entire Merchant family would be massacred. Melanie, the true culprit behind the grizzly attacks, then took her own life, and her adoptive father's name would go down in shame and horror as she framed him for them.
Both her and Isaiah's souls would remain in the world of the living however, the two of them haunting the family portrait together albeit for opposite reasons. Melanie would become an exceedingly hostile and malevolent ghost, continuing her murders for over a hundred years with every person who came to acquire the cursed portrait. Her adoptive father's ghost on the other hand would try and warn her would be victims by manipulating the painting almost always to no avail and kept part of her power suppressed.
It wasn't until Dean and Sam Winchester took the case of the painting that Melanie's blood-soaked story reached its end. Believing Isaiah to be the culprit, much like everyone before them, the Winchesters actually received aid from him by manipulating the painting, and they burned his bones but the carnage continued. They realized Melanie was the true killer, and with Isaiah's spirit gone, her power was fully unrestrained and she viciously attacked Sam and Sarah. Dean returned to the Merchant Family's resting place and burned Melanie's doll that was made with her own hair, putting an end to the murderous girl once and for all.
Personality[]
Being a little girl made getting away with her horrific crimes all the easier. Melanie was a bloodthirsty psychopath and twisted sadist; She killed her victims in manners that made their deaths as bloody as possible, often using a straight razor to bleed them dry. Her evil and drive to kill allowed her spirit to remain even after her death, killing countless as a malevolent ghost for over a century. She was also extremely manipulative and spiteful, killing herself in order to frame her adoptive father for her deeds.
