Melisande Thenardier is a major antagonist in the light novel, manga, and anime series Lord Marksman and Vanadis. She was a widow of the late Duke Felix Aaron Thenardier and only survivor of the House Thenardier. She plans to overthrow her cousin Regin Estelle Loire Bastien do Charles and becoming Brune's new ruler. She serves as the main antagonist of Volumes 11 and 12.
Personality[]
Like her family, Melisande is a power-hungry and sadistic woman who will do whatever takes to overthrow Regin and become the new ruler of Brune. Due to her being Brune's blue bloodline status, she is arrogant and looks down on everyone who is not worthy of Brune's throne. She is also said to be a cruel woman who enjoys torturing her enemies for entertainment. Despite this, she still loved her family, especially her husband and son.

Melisande was married to Felix Aaron Thenardier and became his wife and had a son named Zion, becoming a Duchess of Nemetacum. After the deaths of her husband and son, she was stripped from her rank and was under Regin's mercy, having to stay in Nemetacum's local temple.
Melisande's Uprising[]
At the local shrine, Melisande and among others disapprove of Regin's position as Brune's new ruler.
Melisande and Armand, a House Thenardier's longtime follower attend the banquet at the Halo Festival and attempt to publicly accuse Regin of possessing a fake version for Durandal. Despite successfully humiliate her cousin, she and Armand were shocked to see Regin prepared for the "real" Durandal to the public. Melisande and Armand were still not convinced and continued to overthrow Regin for the throne.
It was later revealed that Melisande has conspired with Brune's rival kingdom, Sachstein in order to overthrow her cousin and having local merchants in giving away half of Nemetacum's territories to an invasive army. After successfully invading Nemetacum by Hans von Klugel, Tigre and his newly reformed army fought against the invasive army and killed Hans. After being released by Armand, Melisande meets up with her supporters and learns that Regin has escaped. But Melisande just smirked and sent her subordinates to go to the Audience Room, knowing that her cousin would be there via a hidden passage.
When she sees Tigre going to the Audience Hall, she recognizes him as her family's killer and orders Armand to kill both him and her cousin. However, Elen assist Tigre and killed Armand by Tigre's arrow shot. Melisande uses the fake Durandal to kill Regin. During the battle, Melisande's clothes were burned by Regin's torch. When she tries to put it out, she accidentally fell into a hole, a secret passage between Regin's bedroom and the Audience Room, breaking her neck and impaled by the fake Durandal shard onto her chest. In her dying words, she told Regin that all she wanted was to restore her family's life, gaining her cousin's sympathy, ending the Thenardier family for good.
