Melquíades is a minor antagonist and boss in the indie game Blasphemous. He is an undead archbishop brought back to life when his corpse was exhumed.
Biography[]
Melquíades served as an archbishop for an unknown church sometime before his death. In the present day, his skeletal corpse was exhumated from the catacombs by his followers, cleansing his bones in wine. They then dressed him in silk and gold, and placed jewels on his face and fingers. They lifted him up, calling his name, and swayed him to make it look as he was walking again. Presumably through the effects of the Miracle, Melquíades body was reanimated.
The Penitent One encounters Melquíades in the Mother of Mothers, held up by five unknown individuals (presumably only arms created by the Miracle). Melquíades is up high enough that the Penitent One cannot reach him, meaning he must attack the arms. Attacking one arm enough times causes it to fall. Once three arms fall, Melquíades is lowered enough to where the Penitent One can hit his weak spot, his head, before he is lifted back up. As Melquíades loses health, more arms must be struct before Melquíades can be reached, up to all five. Melquíades only attacks the Penitent One by striking at their position with the base of his staff.
His other attacks are arena based, one of which releases beams of light coming down from the ceiling onto a random spot of the arena. Melquíades may also plunge his staff down onto a certain position with his staff before a beam comes down right where he plunged. The other attack involves multiple hands coming from the bottom of the platform and attempting to slam down on the Penitent One. Dealing enough damage to the head defeats Melquíades, sending him and his carriers down and allowing the Penitent One to claim the Deformed Mask of Orestes.
