Don't forget who's in control!
~ Melvin's catchphrase to showcase his authority.
Come closer for a second... You smell of Luna.
~ Melvin being suspicious of Digit because of him being infatuated by his creator.

Melvin is the overarching antagonist of the 2021 horror game/RPG Space Yandere. A seemingly de-facto leader of the crew who attempts to found a brand new paradise planet in the future after the Earth was ruined by human greed despite Alex was the person who is the real leader of the crew, Melvin is an obsessed albeit pitiable control freak who will assert his authority and control no matter what in order to cover up his own insecurities. Much like the main antagonist, Luna, he had a rather creepy infatuation with Luna and will do anything to get what he wants for a mere adoration and love from her.

Appearance[]

Melvin has a stereotypical appearance of a "nerd", with a plump build, slightly messy brown hair with bits of uneven facial hair, and large glasses with a spiral on the lenses. For clothing, he wears a white shirt under a crimson jacket, brown pants, and black shoes.

Personality[]

Despite Alex himself being the real leader of the crew members to find the new paradise planet after Earth was completely ruined by human's greed, Melvin claims himself to be the sole de-facto leader of the crew and is described as an obsessive and stern control freak, willing to abuse his own power and social status to get what he wants. This was shown where he has no hesitations to make Digit go haywire which leads to nearly torturing him much to Luna's dismay because of the fact that Digit is different from the bots that Melvin had made as Luna modified one of the robots without his permission. In addition, he also show several creepy tendencies due to his obsession towards Luna much like Luna showing several creepy tendencies towards Alex either by smelling Luna's perfume that Digit has to the point he beckoned Digit to come or creepily tells Luna that she may modified his robot if she ask permission towards him.

In the end, despite his control-freak nature, Melvin shows himself to be a mentally unstable loser and a coward akin to Muruta Azrael or Lord Djibril from Mobile Suite Gundam SEED who will abuse his authority to cover up his own insecurities. His cowardice can be shown during the incident when the robots went haywire as when both Alex, Digit and the mechanic Sparks confront him in the control room, Melvin was startled to see Alex was alive all along and when asked by Alex to stop the madness, Melvin instead attempts to evade responsibility by lying to Alex as he tells him that there's nothing he can do about it in order to hide the fact that both him and Luna were responsible for the mess that happened.

He also shows his childish tendencies albeit a bit of an understandable emotion when he ended up getting enraged after it was revealed that Luna was using him all along due to him being an easy pawn to be discarded to further her own plans and was never interested with him to begin with. As a result, Melvin attempts to kill all of the people including Luna in the spaceship and prevent them to escape. In the end, Melvin serves as a male foil towards Luna or at the very least, a dark reflection of herself, while also acting as a potential pitiable figure that got manipulated by other people due to the fact that both of them are Yanderes who went insane after seeing their loved ones rejected them in favor of someone else. Melvin can also serve as an antithesis towards Luna because while Luna seek to atone herself despite her mental illness and her being a loser doesn't excuse her behavior, Melvin didn't choose to redeem himself and decided to sink himself lower out of desperation by trying to kill the heroes even if in the end, he is somewhat of a pitiable figure after Luna uses him as a pawn to get what she wants. It can be explained that Melvin is this way due to his inferiority complex and his unstable nature, which resulted in him desiring to keep anyone under his control in order to seek validation especially for Luna, making his actions while rather inexcusable, also can be sympathized and understandable to a certain extent.

Biography[]

Melvin was first mentioned when Digit visits Sparks for the first time when he was seen tuning on one of Melvin's robots. However, due to Sparks being inexperienced as a mechanic that could make or fix the robot, the robot accidentally exploded which resulted in Sparks asking Digit to not tell Melvin about what happened. As Digit meet with Melvin in the control room for the first time, the latter ended up sniffing the smell of Luna's perfume which resulted in him meeting with Digit together. However, after seeing Digit and how he was created by Luna, he becomes enraged because of the fact that Luna has messing up with his design again without his permission.

At the same time however, after the first time meeting with Melvin, he then beckons Digit to come to him as he tried to creepily smell him due to Digit having a smell of Luna's perfume. In addition, he also acts like a smug asshole that tries to assert his authority by saying he's the person who's in control of the spaceship while also viewing Digit as a pathetic little orange robot. After the chat with Melvin, the latter then rudely tells Digit to not bother him because he was busy with other stuffs.

After Digit delivers a treat to Alex under Luna's orders, Melvin suddenly barges into Luna's room knowing that Luna build a robot that is different than his without his permission. This resulted in him trying to make Digit haywire with his remote control which ended up torturing him as Luna begged him to stop. After torturing Digit and finding out that Digit's core design was still intact despite being heavily modified by Luna, Melvin then warns Luna that the robots in the spaceship are all his creations and orders Luna to not modify his robots anymore unless if she asks Melvin nicely while also reminding her about his authority much to Luna's annoyance. After the incident, Sparks then checks out on both Luna and Melvin if they are both okay which resulted in Luna complaining towards Sparks about Melvin's behavior when he scolds her not to touch the bots ever again while also thank Sparks for looking after her.

However, during the next day, Luna suffered an emotional breakdown after seeing Alex and Eden making out together in the simulation room. This resulted in her attempting to manipulate Melvin by seducing him so that they could hatch a devious plan under the pretense that both Melvin and Luna could be together forever which resulted in Melvin comply with Luna's plans. As Luna orders Digit to give a mysterious cake for Eden who was staying at the simulation room, Digit then meets with Melvin again who then not-so-subtly tells Digit about his and Luna's nefarious plan that they hatched while also planning to involve Digit in the crossfire.

It was then revealed that both Luna and Melvin planned to make the robots go haywire including Digit despite it was revealed that Sparks removed a mysterious chip implemented inside of him which made Luna furious as he ended up acting normal. As Digit attempts to escape from Luna's wrath, he then encounters both Sparks and Alex who were hiding from the haywire robots. It was then revealed that Alex already ordered all of the passengers evacuating the ship in the long run to escape from the robot attacks, evidenced by Sparks saying that almost everyone made it off to the ship with few exceptions such as Melvin as it happens in most of the endings.

After teaming up with Alex and Sparks in order to find Eden and the crazed Luna under Alex's orders, they both go to the control room finding Melvin who was surprised to see Alex alive. This resulted in him trying to save his own skin due to the fact that he and Luna were behind this mess by trying to lie towards Alex saying that the bots were out of his control and there's nothing he can do about it when Alex orders him to do something with the bots that went haywire. When Digit and co. were confronted by Luna who then tells her true goals on leaving only Alex alive, this causes Melvin to get angry due to the betrayal Luna has committed and then attempts to kill Luna which causes her to become scared as she was attacked by the robots.

If the player decides to save Luna while also killed Eden by giving her the suspicious cake, Melvin then activates a huge computer known as Mainframe to kill them both before Digit manages to cripple it in order to escape. However, in the end, Luna become filled with regrets albeit it doesn't excuse her behavior and wanted to stay on the ship as a form of atonement. This resulted in the players will get the Neutral Ending known as "Escape". The players will get the same ending if Luna was left to her own doom getting brutally murdered by the robots.

During the Good and True Ending route where the players decided to spare Eden by throwing the cake into the trash chute and also save Luna from Melvin's robots, as the crew manage to persuade Luna to join them to evacuate the ship despite the horrible things she had done, suddenly the robot known as "Evac" was malfunctioning as it was revealed that Melvin intentionally sabotage Evac so that they won't escape easily as he attempts to kill them all which resulted in Luna attempts to persuade Melvin to stop his actions to no avail. This resulted in Digit pulling a Heroic Sacrifice by luring the bots and Melvin into the Ejection Chute, killing both Melvin and the robots as they were thrown into space with Evac being functioning again.
