Melvin ain't so small now!
~ Melvin

Melvin Underbelly was the grotesquely obese halfling hero from the videogame Overlord.

History[]

Background[]

Melvin was originally a normal halfling and one of Seven Heroes who fought Second Overlord. Assisted by the eight Hero who joined them last, they emerged victorious thanks to his sacrifice and proceeded to confiscate every asset of the dark lord, leaving his lair in ruins as the result. However, neither Melvin nor his comrades were interested in recovering the eight Hero's body to give him a proper burial, going so far shutting down Oberon Greenhaze's idea to do so and claimed all the credit of defeating Second Overlord for themselves. Little did these heroes know their selfishness ultimately made it easier for a sinister force stirring them to a dark path and that the eight Hero had been both revived and chosen to be the Third Overlord in courtesy of Gnarl and surviving Minions.

Overlord[]

Third Overlord's Rise to Power[]

By the time Third Overlord begins his own reign of terror, Melvin had become the tyrannical and gluttonous king of his homeland Mellow Hills. The Wizard, his fellow Seven Heroes member, convinced him that he could have all the food he wanted, leading him to eat large amounts of food thus becoming larger yet morbidly obese (he was surprisingly still mobile despite such condition). But then, he went overboard by ordering his people to wage war against entire Spree just to steal their food and appease his appetite. To compound the issue, Melvin recruited/tamed a number of trolls as part of his army.

Melvin himself was not seen until Third Overlord's raiding party led by the dark lord himself reached the party he attended. Upon the arrival of Third Overlord and his forces, Melvin fled the scene and had a musician playing a magical song which entranced the dark lord's minions. Not even Gnarl, who oversaw his master's raiding party via. Tower Heart from within safe confines of their lair, was safe from the song because their magical connection allowed him to see and hear what the latter did. Unamused by this setback, Third Overlord killed the musician to put a stop to such foolishness, freeing his underlings and allowing the raiding party to continue their pursuit.

Soon after, Third Overlord and his forces caught up with Melvin Underbelly in his personal kitchen. Said kitchen was vast, holding up tons of food enough to feed over a hundred minions, and Melvin's chefs there enslaved Red Minions under their captive to help them cooking. After freeing Red Minions who then assisted him in dealing Melvin's guards and chefs alike, Third Overlord and his forces face Melvin in battle and the latter's size makes him a formidable opponent. Throughout the battle, Melvin displayed an extreme level of gluttony verging on cannibalism, as he constantly tries to kill and devour the minions.

After killing Melvin, the Overlord was rewarded with a portion of concentrated evil, which in turn brought him closer to his goal of conquest.

Overlord: Raising Hell[]

In the bonus content of the game, it is shown that Melvin's tormented spirit is punished in the Abyss via being condemned to an eternity of eating until he literally explodes, only to be resurrected again to restart the process.

Trivia[]

  • Like all of the Seven Heroes, Melvin represents one of the seven deadly sins, in this case gluttony.
  • The seven heroes are also a parody of a typical fantasy-rpg-party, with Melvin being the Halfling. Because of his love of music and festivities, it is also possible that he was the bard of the team.
  • Melvin is the first corrupted hero encountered in the game.
