~ The Melynxes' entry in the Hunter's Notes |
The Melynxes are supporting antagonists in the action RPG series Monster Hunter. They are a tribe of Lynians that, unlike their Felyne cousins, are rather greedy and selfish, enjoying to steal objects from hunters that wander into their territory. As such, they're frequently considered annoyances to hunters that go on expeditions in places they frequent.
Appearance[]
Like most other Lynians, Melynxes appear to be bipedal cats, possessing black fur with white feet, hands and ears, with paw print markings near their hands on their arms. They possess a large, diamond shaped patch of white fur on their faces as well as light blue eyes. Additionally, they also have a light brown paw print on their bellies.
While Melynxes that live with humans can be found wearing all sorts of clothing, wild Melynxes are often completely nude, except for the checkered yellow bandanas they wear. They often carry around small bags to store objects, and wield staffs shaped like cat paws.
Behaviour and Abilities[]
Befitting of their feline natures and anthropomorphic appearances, Melynxes are cunning and shrewd monsters that are as intelligent as humans. The Melynxes that prowl the wild display an incredible apt for survival, being capable of living and thriving in almost every environment, using their small sizes and agility to evade hungry monsters and catch food. They are also quite sneaky, being capable of swiping items right from under the noses of unsuspecting hunters. Like their Felyne cousins, Melynxes cannot be killed in-game and will burrow underground when they sense they're overwhelmed, taking their ill-gotten gains with them.
While Melynxes all vary greatly in terms of personality and moral alignment, the tribes that inhabit the wild all seem to be rather greedy, often scouring their territories in search of baubles and trinkets. When encountering a hunter, they will not hesitate to come up to them and steal their goods, often taking advantage of distractions to swipe additional items when downed. Melynxes seem to have friendly relations with other feline-like Lynians, but are hostile to Gajalakas and Shakalakas.
Habitats[]
Like Felynes, Melynxes can be found living with humans or in tribes in the wilderness. Their resourcefulness and quick wits have allowed them to colonise almost every biome, with Melynx camps often being designated by a pile of their stolen goods, from which hunters can reclaim their possessions.
Trivia[]
- In most games, a Melynx will target a hunter as soon as they get in its radius, wait for 4~5 seconds, then charge at the hunter to steal items.
- It takes being in a Melynx’ general presence for around 15~20 seconds, directly bumping into them, or attacking them to tempt them to attack and steal in Monster Hunter Rise, somewhat longer than any other game.
- A Melynx makes a cameo in the prologue of Episode 11 in Asura's Wrath, crawling while overlooking a hot spring.
