The Memories of Murder Killer is an unidentified, at large serial killer and the central antagonist of the 2003 Korean crime film success Memories of Murder. The killer would rape and murder women with ritualistic consistencies, including a signature of tying them in their own clothes. Amidst police brutality in the investigation and DNA tests done by the USA when sent by the local authorities, there was much panic, chaos, and outrage trying to find the killer, but all suspects were cleared, and the killer was never found.

His stunt performer is unknown.

Biography[]

Women and girls in a Korean city were being raped and murdered starting in October 1986. There were several notorious commonalities with the murders noticed as the investigation continued. Each woman and girl were blitz-attacked at night, in the rain, while wearing red clothes. They were tied and gagged with their clothes, brutally raped, and then strangled with their clothes to murder them. They were left dead off roads and in fields still bound in their clothes, their heads often covered. A glaring, in-your-face signature found by Officer Kwon Kwi-ok was also that a local radio station received the request of of the same song each night a murder was committed. Two women at first were killed and connected by the same killer when the murders began. it was realized to be serial as more women started to die, especially by the signatures that were found. Park Doo-man and Cho Yong-koo were the detectives assigned to the case, Seo Tae-yoon a detective on lease from Seoul to assist in the investigation. Seo's horrified to find out the investigation was handled nightmarishly, with evidence being handled haphazardly, no leads or witnesses from the killer's stealth MO, and mandated police brutality, with Cho regularly beating confessions out of suspects, often with Park's approval and even orders. Even Park's intuition from his "shaman" eyes, where he alleges he "sees" guilt form eye contact, isn't enough for the investigation. Several suspects are eliminated throughout the course of the investigation and the serial crimes. Baek Kwang-ho, an intellectually challenged boy, is found and beaten into a confession, but Seo finds out he's too physically weak and scarred to be as brutal as the murders are. Eon Deok-nyeo escaped from the killer in an attempt on her life, and she gave the testimony of remembering the killer having softer hands. This leads a sexual deviant found masturbating into women's lingerie at one crime scene cleared as well. When they fail to save another woman who's raped and killed, they find peach pieces in her digestive tract, which, along with other leads, lead to factory man Park Hyeon-gyu. Cho beats him in a fit of rage, leaving him barred out of the room. Baek's confession is heard once again, and Detective Park realized he knows details of one of the earlier murders, not because he's the killer, but a witness. Park goes to the restaurant Baek's father runs, only to see Cho drunk and getting into bar fights with everyone there over police hatred as they hear about the investigation's lack of conduct and procedure over the news. Baek swings a board into Cho's leg, piercing it with a rusty nail and infecting Cho with tetanus, leading to his leg needing amputation. Park and Seo try to question Baek in a chase, but Beak is killed by an oncoming train when trying to run. Semen is found at one of the murders, and the US takes the DNA to be processed and tested with Hyeon-gyu. When the latest murder is that of a schoolgirl Park befriended during the investigation, out of horror, disgust, and seeing red, he's out for Hyeon-gyu's blood and attacks and attempts to shoot in. Seo stops him and reveals a shock: the DNA doesn't match any suspects. Hyeon-gyu's let go, and the case is never solved, but the murders seemingly stop. In 2003, Park, retired from the force, returns to one of the earlier crime scenes in a vast, rural field. A schoolgirl walks to him and says she saw a "normal"-looking man standing there before, remembering something he did in the past. Realizing he's the killer, Park stares at the camera, breaking the fourth wall to try and "see" the killer in the movie's audience.

Trivia[]

  • The serial killings are based off the first Korean serial murders in history, at the very least modern history. From October 1986 to April 1991, ten women were raped and strangled by the "Hwaseong Serial Killer", never being caught for decades and all statues on trying the murders running out by 2006. Consistencies went as far as the real killer also stripping the women who were attacked and murdered of their clothes, binding them with them and leaving them bound even once they were dead. DNA was found in semen, but the results were sent to Japan, not the US, and the results matched no suspects. However, in 2019, Lee Choon-jae was identified as the Hwaseong Killer, convicted and imprisoned for the rape and murder of his sister-in-law. According to sources, Lee denied the allegations, but after more time and once DNA was publicized to match, Lee confessed in full to all the murders. As well as four additional murders, two in Suwon and two in Cheongju, which exonerated one man, Yoon Seong-yeo, of raping and killing one of the women, resulting in his conviction overturn and release, with his thanks to and apologies from the courts. The rest of Lee's confession was that of the rapes and attempted rapes of over thirty more women. Due to the statues running out, Lee was never tried for the crimes and still resides in a Busan jail, but the director of Memories of Murder, Bong Joon-ho, applauded and gave his own thanks to the force for the closing of the case and the identification of Lee as the Hwaseong Killer.
