Admiral Mendak is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Data's Day".
He was portrayed by the late Alan Scarfe, who also played Augris in Star Trek: Voyager and Nigel Griffith in Double Impact.
Biography[]
Admiral Mendak was a Romulan officer who was assigned the task of retrieving Subcommander Selok, a Romulan spy who had spent a number of years undercover posing as a Vulcan ambassador, T'Pel. To this end, the Romulans contacted the Federation offering to open peace negotiations but stating they would only speak with "T'Pel". Mendak's ship the Devoras was thus sent to rendezvous with the Enterprise, which was transporting Selok in her guise as T'Pel. Mendak contacted the Enterprise and spoke with Selok/T'Pel, who agreed to transport over to the Romulan ship for negotiations. Mendak commented on Captain Picard raising defensive screens, saying he saluted the show of strength.
Mendak then faked "T'Pel"'s death, beaming Selok aboard at the same moment that he beamed organic material onto the transporter pad, making it looks as though she had been killed in a transporter accident. Picard contacted Mendak to inform him of "T'Pel"'s apparent death. Mendak accused the Federation of faking an accident and killing "T'Pel" in order to sabotage the peace talks and suggested they go their separate ways.
However, the Enterprise then pursued the Devoras, having worked out that the death had been faked and reached the erroneous conclusion that Mendak had set it up in order to abduct a Federation ambassador. Picard again contacted Mendak, insisting he would not withdraw and leave a Federation citizen in Romulan hands. Unwilling to start a war, Mendak revealed Selok's true identity to the Enterprise, demonstrating he had not abducted a Federation citizen, but made it clear his patience had its limit. With Romulan reinforcements arriving, the Enterprise chose to retreat and allow Mendak to complete his mission.
