Meretankhkar is the secondary antagonist of the indie horror game Amenti. She is a powerful Queen of Ancient Egypt, who, along with her King, Rudamon, are known to kill and torment intruders who dare to disturb the Pharaoh's eternal rest along with their mummified servants.
Amenti[]
During the great drought in Egypt's second millennium, Meretankhkar and her King, Rudamon, held a sacred bond with these "star gods". Unlike Rudamon, Meretankhkar refused mummification because she did not trust the aliens due to having dreams of Rudamon suffering in pain in the afterlife. At some point, she would die from an illness, decomposing while sitting on a chair deep within Rudamon's tomb. Though Meretankhkar and Rudamon don't seem to try to kill the player immediately which depending how one interprets it, could either suggest that this shows a more sadistic side to them, preferring to toy with their victims before going in for the kill or this could mean that they are merciful to some extent by giving intruders a chance to turn back while they still can.
In 1922, explorer Henry Caldwell enters Rudamon's tomb, but suffers a gruesome death, getting killed by either Meretankhkar, Rudamon, or their mummy bodyguards.
In 1979, photographer Ethan Carter, who in need of career advancement, foolishly enters the tomb and is trapped by Meretankhkar and Rudamon in a pocket dimension that seems to teleport him in different timeline. Eventually, Carter is trapped in Amenti, the dimension of the aliens who once helped the Egyptians, instead of suffering a gruesome death like Caldwell. It is unknown what the aliens plan to do with Carter.
Personality[]
From what can be seen from her mannerisms in the game, Meretankhar is fiercely protective of her husband and his peace. Disturbing Rudamon not only awakens his wrath, but it also awakens Meretankhar's wrath as well. This can be heard through her agonizing wails of grief and anguish after Ethan had opened Rudamon's tomb. Her and her husband along with their mummified servants chased after Ethan once he had awakened the curse.
Meretankhar at first does not seem to attack Ethan right away when he enters the pyramids, instead she can be seen staring and observing him from afar after Carter reads one of Henry's letters. This could be seen as her offering Ethan a chance to turn back while he still can when she could have killed him right then and there if she really wanted to, this makes her merciful to an extent.
Judging by Henry Caldwell's writings about her in his letters, Meretankhar is rather fearsome, perhaps even more so than her husband is. Especially because Henry states that he knows his death will be slow and agonizing once he is in her grasp.
Trivia[]
- Rudamon's and Meretankhkar's method of killing intruders as seen by what they do if Ethan gets too close to either one of them, is to brutally pummel them to death with their fists. Interestingly, Rudamon requires multiple punches to kill intruders while his wife only needs one slap to kill intruders. Meretankhkar's method seem to be more brutal since those that are on the receiving ends of her blow often crying and whimpering in agony before their death, while Rudamon often puts the intruders into a headlock makes quick works on the intruders by beating them down.
- Both him and his wife are very tall as they tower above Ethan. Especially given that Rudamon had to lean his head down slightly when he walked passed the doorframe after Ethan had grabbed the ankh from an empty tomb, though this could be because crown, however Rudamon's shoulders were close to the top of the doorframe. As Rudamon and Meretankhkar advance towards Ethan in the last sequence, we can see that Ethan is looking up at both of them even without crouching.
- Meretankhkar has noticeable blood splatters on her chest and on her face, unlike Rudamon who doesn't seem to have any blood on him at all. This could either mean that it came from her sickness (unlikely due to the fact that the blood looks like it splattered on her as well as her remains not having any signs of blood at all) or she may have been the one to kill any previous explorers that invaded her husband's tomb, thus making her potentially more dangerous and aggressive than Rudamon.
- They have shown to have multiple mummies as their servants and guardians of their tombs. These mummies will attack and kill intruders when the royal couple are not around. Their methods of killing intruders is strangulation.
- It isn't fully known what Meretankhkar does when there is no intruder. As stated before she refused mummification, thus her soul cannot move onto the afterlife, it can be assumed that she simply wanders the hallways given what her will states and that one of the trailers show her just standing in the darkest corners whilst looking down.
