~ Mesmeroth killing Sir Corbin using beacon technology and magic (just as he once saved him that way), making Gen his dark servant automaton, and some of his most infamous quotes. |
Mesmeroth, also known as Shadow Mesmeroth in his spirit form when merged with the Shadow, is the main antagonist of Cornfox and Bros's Oceanhorn video game series.
A young boy from a village named Faroah, Mesmeroth had unique skills and an unusual knowledge of magic and technology, which he used to build automatons. The Grand Regent of Arcadia, Archimedes brought him to the White City, knowing this boy would show great promise. In the Direfolk War which besieged Arcadia, he destroyed Shadowmaga, the perpetrator of the war and put on his mask, which enabled him to see the Stream of Creation with his own eyes. With a different idea for the fate of Arcadia influenced by the Shadow, Mesmeroth went to war against Arcadia to stop Archimedes from taking the realm to the stars. However, his armada was destroyed, prompting the Shadow to give him the dark energy source named TRILOTH, which would destroy the White City. Mesmeroth transferred his consciousness into the Grand Core, and cursed the Sacred Emblems, which would make the Living Fortresses lose a sense of guidance and seek for their lost masters, causing fear in Arcadia. He is the first adoptive father of Hero and the arch-nemesis and rival of Archimedes.
In Oceanhorn, as Shadow Mesmeroth, he was voiced by Andrew Montesi. In Oceanhorn 2, he was voiced by Ray Chase, who also voiced Fyodor Dostoevsky in Bungo Stray Dogs, Ryumen Sukuna and Choso in Jujutsen Kaisen, Rokuro in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Rustal Elion in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans, Rubber Soul in JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: Stardust Crusaders, Dr. Genus in One-Punch Man, the Master of Masters from Kingdom Hearts, Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion and The Rebuild of Evangelion, Gabriel May in Malignant, Genichiro Ashina in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Jason in Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness.
Appearance[]
As a warlock Mesmeroth had a purple robe around him. His weapon is a black staff with a purple ring near the tip.
Before his use of the Guardian of the Realm's mask, Mesmeroth appeared as a youthful 17-year old as shown in a photo in Master Mayfair's house.
However, after transferring his innate consciousness into the Grand Core, he would have a ghostly face that somewhat resembled the Guardian of the Realm's mask while his noncorporeal hands that controlled his machines would be red.
Personality[]
Mesmeroth was a curious warlock who wanted to know about the truth that underlies Gaia. He was also quite intelligent and creative as he used magic and technology to build robots, such as the servant robot named Gen. Due to this, he might have been slightly arrogant as he stated that the people of Faroah did not know about the world. He was also quite antisocial due to his lonely life, as Master Mayfair mentioned that he “never got along with anybody.” Despite this, he was genuinely friends with Archimedes and Calliope (with the latter showing motherly kindness towards him), as well as Sir Corbin and Master Mayfair (he desperately saved Corbin’s life using his newfound powers by placing his soul inside Gen and trusted Master Mayfair to take care of Hero because he considered him “the most honest man he had ever known.”) However, under the Shadow’s influence, he increasingly bore resentment towards Archimedes because he banished him and because of their different beliefs, therefore getting corrupted. He also got self-righteous as believing that Archimedes was a maniacal madman who "thirsts for power" and he didn't accept the world the way it was. He also claimed that he was not power-hungry, only being there to stop Archimedes, and even wanting Hero and Trin to rule over the ashes of Arcadia. However, this was likely a lie or probably was subverted later as Mesmeroth cursed the Sacred Emblems and attempted to kill their descendants (both father and son). Mesmeroth showed his newfound ruthlessness when he killed his former friend Sir Corbin and saying that it was a mistake for saving him earlier.
Trivia[]
- Mesmeroth can be considered as a foil to his archenemy Archimedes: both were very ambitious and curious men who had a wide range of knowledge but had a thirst to know even more, possibly to control things. In the events after the Direfolk War, their lust for knowledge would advance into madness because of events that happened to them: Mesmeroth putting on the Guardian of the Realm's Mask (which caused the Shadow to influence his decisions) and for Archimedes, the death of his wife Calliope. They would both awaken the two souls from another world (Hero and Trin), and with this knowledge, try to bring upon their own vision of the fate of the realm. However, they had different views (Mesmeroth believed that Arcadia should turn into islands, or at least that was after TRILOTH was unleashed, and Archimedes wanted to take his kingdom to the stars above to honor his wife’s wish and possibly destroy the world by doing so) which caused them to clash.
- Mesmeroth bears some similarities to the iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader; both were young war heroes who had humble origins, but disagreements with their superiors (Archimedes and Obi-Wan Kenobi respectively) and manipulations related to a Bigger Bad in the franchise (the Shadow and Emperor Palpatine, respectively) caused them to fall into darkness. They also have their own troop army (the Dark Army and Stormtroopers) and their own huge ship (the Dark Chariot and Death Star). Mesmeroth also is a “father” to the protagonist Hero as he activated the Beacon to transport him to Arcadia and like Vader and Luke, have a climactic battle. However, Anakin has a tragic backstory, is played very sympathetically, his heroics are shined on much more, Luke is his biological son, and he redeems himself where Mesmeroth doesn’t and goes on to be the sole Big Bad.
- Some fans previously had confusion if Mesmeroth or Hero’s real name is “Theo” as represented by the Anima Orb that preceded the birth of Hero and which Mesmeroth used in the creation of his Dark Army and his diffusion into the Grand Core. The idea that Theo is Mesmeroth’s real name is exemplified by a note written in the Pirta Beacon by “Theo the Warlock” which lead some to believe that the one who wrote the note was a young Mesmeroth working for Archimedes. Upon request to clear the matter up on Reddit, Cornfox stated that Mesmeroth’s former name was indeed Theo.
