he was willing to sacrifice the entire film to save Faye, he was also geniunely scared near the end and got killed / eaten.. that's pretty gruesome even for an unlikeable character : also, he was somewhat of a generic horror antagonist when you think on it, killing and torturing without much reason.. lots and lots of horror characters do the same stuff and fail CM status.
Most horror villains can count as CMs. Just look at Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger. Again, he didn't seem to concerned when Faye was killed, and he also deserved his fate at the end of the film, because he was such a monstrous character, and that the natives to take action.
okay : first of all.. most horror characters ARE CMs.. Chucky, Freddy, Jason etc..
even then Yates stands out because he's a genocidal son of a bitch who has travelled the world orchestrating artocities on a par with some corrupt dictatorships : for fun.. you understand that, Chris? he kills entire tribes / societies.. for fun.
Also his death was symbolic and highly needed - it was the jungle's way of purging itself of the evils he brought : he wanted the tribe to go berserk, he got what he deserved and if you watched the damn movie you'd see after Yates died the tribe became peaceful again and even allowed outsiders in, they killed him for a reason : that reason was simple - he was trying to wipe them out.. for fun.
Also if he loved Faye he wouldn't of raped a woman in front of her and laughed about it, as for being scared.. that's called "fear of death" - he didn't want to die and it was not love, it was "oh crap, I messed up.. I may get hurt.. time to get the fuck out of here".
and neither is Alan Yates, as has now been irrefutably proven : see? I did watch the film and unlikely a vast majority of the wiki I didn't demonize the character - he DID care for Faye, thus his CM status is automatically destroyed.. end of discussion.
this is goddamn stupid, Alan Yates IS a CM and this BS ends here : just because one user agreed with you doesn't mean you are correct.. CMs can show moments of "caring" for someone, if that "care" is shown to be fickle - look at Joker and Harley Quinn.. heck, I'll go to a dark place and say it : look at Batman and Joker's entire relationship.
NUMEROUS times Joker has stopped his plans short of killing Batman, saved Batman and even "gave up" (briefly) - yet he's a CM because moments after these moments of "care" he goes back to trying to cause chaos and death.. a CM does not need to be a generic doomsday "smash, kill, destroy" - they can have VERY small amounts of human traits, yet they are so monstrous these rare moments do not count.
Joker has never "backed down" to "save" Batman - you are talking out of your ass.. CMs can't have any feelings for anyone other than themselves, El-Ocsed has proven Yates is NOT a CM so I'm done with you.
Joker has ALWAYS done that crap, he stops short of killing Batman because he likes Batman in a twisted way.. Joker "cares" for Batman.. that's why a character showing "affection / concern" for another does not always mean they aren't a CM - proving the "care" is shown to be so fickle that it barely counts.
Yates did "care" for Faye, yet he was as fickle as Joker in the sense he'd still abuse her and to be frank even if he had "care" for her it does not exclude the trillions of monstrous trats he has.
No villain outside generic cartoon madmen have zero "care", a CM often has "care" but it just does NOT justify ANYTHING they do.. nor do they show much remorse over these actions.
Yates wanted to "save" Faye, he was willing to stop the film but that is NOT remorse nor is it remotely a redeeming factor - like I said, Joker HAS done similar with Batman : just because a monstrous psycho ocassionally spares someone or has momentary "care" doesn't stop them being monstrous psychos.
A CM is judged by their overall character, not just a one-off act of "kindness" - if we excluded CMs who had one moment of vague "kindness" we'd have NO CMs save for very generic Doomsday Monsters.
yes but he shot one of his friends to save them the horror of being eaten alive, he also objected to Faye being left behind - thus he has more geniune love for the crew than anyone else.. not a nice person but not a complete monster as he had some basic humanity to him.
The reason he treated the locals so bad was basically because he (and the other crew members) were racist assholes - didn't mean he didn't have some redeeming qualities.. he was borderline monster but like I said before he did care for his friends.
