Thou'rt Tarnished, it seemeth. Mother, wouldst thou truly Lordship sanction, in one so bereft of light? Yet...my purpose standeth unchanged. Those stripped of the Grace of Gold shall all meet death. In the embrace of Messmer's flame.
~ Messmer during his first encounter with the Tarnished.
Mother... Marika... A curse..upon thee...
~ Messmer disowning Marika after finally realizing that she had abandoned him, and also his last words.

Messmer the Impaler is the secondary antagonist of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. He is the son of Queen Marika, who used him to wage wars on those that opposed her and the Golden Order, before being casted out into the Land of Shadow once he had served his purpose.

He is voiced by Jack Barton.

Personality[]

In the past, Messmer was once a loyal follower and warlord under Marika's rule, and waged an endless purge against the impure and those without the grace of gold, which led to brutal outcomes and bloodshed. However this was deliberately done so that Marika would use him as a scapegoat so he would take the blame for her actions, leading him to becoming a detested figure by the inhabitants of the Realm of Shadow, most notably the Hornsent.

He also appears to have a compassionate side for others, most notably for Radahn and Gaius, viewing the two as his elder brothers. This side of compassion also extends towards his soldiers that follow him, going as far as to honor and mourn for those that have fallen, even the ones that tried to rebel against him, such as Huw and Andreas. He also holds a room filled with Living Jars, where he looks after them with tender care.

While continuing his crusade in the Realm of Shadow and being unaware that his mother had merely used him as a tool and had ceased all contact with him, Messmer remained bound by his loyalty to the Golden Order and to an extent, the role that he was given by Queen Marika, hoping that she will one day return for him. Due to this, he tasks himself to take out the Tarnished, in spite of having no real animosity towards them and instead does so out of a sense of duty. Upon defeat, however, when he finally realized that Marika had indeed abandoned him after what was supposed to be an eternity of abandonment, Messmer immediately renounced her as his mother in his final moments and even cursed her with his dying breath.

Biography[]

Messmer was born during the Second Liurnian War as a son of Marika the Eternal and an unknown father (possibly Radagon, due to his red hair). Like his other siblings, Malenia and Miquella, he was afflicted with a curse at birth, in which a dark and malevolent serpent called the Abyssal Serpent, writhed within his body, threatening to eat him from the inside. Out of fear of it being released, Marika sealed it away within her son's body by plucking Messmer's eye out and replacing it with a seal of grace.

Years later, Messmer was banished to the Land of Shadow after Marika decided to have him wage war on the Hornsent and those deemed impure, as they do not bear the light of grace nor the grace of gold. As he waged a destructive war unseen by those in the Lands Between, Messmer burned anything in his path through his army and his magical flame. In addition, he would impale many of his victims on pikes, earning him the cognomen, "The Impaler".

Eventually, a group of individuals would come to the Land of Shadow with the goal of finding and Rescuing the Demigod Miquella. Among this group is the Tarnished, who would eventually meet Messmer after battling their way through his forces. Although Messmer holds no ill will against the Tarnished, he nonetheless chooses to fight them out of what little loyalty to Marika he still had.

As the fight continues, Realizing the Tarnished strength, as well as seemingly understanding that Marika has abandoned him completely, Messmer removed the seal of grace that served as his eye, unleashing the Abyssal Serpent. Even with this new power, the Tarnished manged to slay Messmer, who with his last breath bitterly curses Markia. The Tarnished would then use Messmer Flame to clear a path forward on their quest to confront Miquella.

Trivia[]

  • Messmer is the only child of Marika whose father remains unknown. However, his red hair suggests his father could be Radagon.
  • His key item, Messmer's Kindling, mentions he has a younger sister that bore a vision of fire. This is heavily implied to be Melina, who witnessed the burning of the Erdtree and herself.
