Sure, started out that way. He was my "origin story". And then the next few times, I targeted men like him because I wanted to create the rush of my first kill. But between us, I just enjoy killing. And when I have an itch, I scratch it.
~ Mia revealing that she kills indiscriminately.
Don't worry. Once the lye burns holes through your corneas, you won't be able to see what I'm about to do to you. You will feel it, though.
~ Mia as she prepares to kill a man

Mia LaPierre, also dubbed Lady Vengeance, is a major antagonist in Dexter: Resurrection. LaPierre is a sommelier and vigilante serial killer who only targets sexual predators; or at least those the press reports as such.

In actuality, LaPierre is a brutal sadist who gets off on killing anyone regardless of whether they're innocent, while the newspapers just claim "predator" anyway. She is part of a group of like-minded killers united at the invitation of Leon Prater, including Lowell Sloane, Gareth Pike, Al Walker, and the titular Dexter Morgan (masquerading as Ronald Schmidt).

Initially, Dexter sees a kindred spirit in Mia and tries to connect with her, believing she follows a moral code similar to Harry's. When he discovers the truth, Dexter engineers her arrest, realizing they are not so alike after all.

She is portrayed by Krysten Ritter, who also played Natacha in Nightbooks.

Personality[]

Mia is a sophisticated, charismatic, sardonic, seductive, and cautious woman. As a child, she had anger issues and was prone to violence. Her parents dismissed this as simply being "angry all the time" rather than seeking professional help, so her dark impulses went untreated. Ballet helped release some of this rage, but it wasn't enough to satisfy "the Itch" (how Mia describes her urge to kill). She is also an expert sommelier with extensive knowledge of fine wine.

Mia initially appears as someone who only targets sexual predators in her serial killing pursuits, having started her murders by avenging the rape and death of her sister Hazel. However, she later admits that she is simply a woman who enjoys murder, whether the victim is innocent or not; there is no "nobility" to what she does, and she finds it annoying that the press insists there must be. Her kills are often brutal, as she bludgeons victims and gouges out their eyes. She also takes various personal items from her victims to store in a music box.

Mia is interested in Dexter (or "Red") and invites him to her place to show off her trophies. Noticing his fascination with them, she attempts to seduce him by inviting him to shower with her. However, Dexter leaves to kill Lowell. Later, when Mia attempts to join Dexter in murdering an innocent rideshare driver (as Ronald Schmidt would), Dexter refuses and later stages her arrest, as it turns out they share little in common.

Biography[]

Background[]

Mia grew up constantly moving due to her mother's restlessness, with their longest stay being in Tulsa. She had pent-up anger that her neglectful parents failed to get her help for, dismissing it with "stop being so angry all the time." In first grade, Mia attacked a classmate with a library book and thumbtacks. She also experiences an internal drive to kill that she calls "The Itch."

At 15, Mia discovered ballet as an outlet for her aggression, in which she was talented. She was admitted to an out-of-town dance academy, thus escaping her mother's boyfriend who had been eyeing her inappropriately. However, she left her younger sister Hazel behind, thinking she was too young to leave. When Mia returned for summer, she learned her mother's boyfriend had raped and murdered Hazel, so Mia killed him in revenge. This influenced her to target and murder sexual predators who escaped justice like him. She became notorious for this and was dubbed "Lady Vengeance" by the New York City press. However, as Mia later claimed, she only started out targeting predators to recreate the rush of her first kill, not out of justice. She is perfectly fine with killing innocents.

By day, Mia works as a master sommelier with extensive knowledge in fine wines. She's been part of Leon Prater's exclusive serial killer group for four years, primarily for the money.

Dexter: Resurrection[]

"Call Me Red"[]

When Dexter Morgan infiltrates the group as "Red" (posing as Ronald Schmidt), Mia is introduced to him by Leon Prater as a renowned sommelier who moonlights as "Lady Vengeance." She immediately catches his eye due to their apparently similar moral codes, as Dexter targets killers whereas Mia targets predators. They decide to meet up and jog through Central Park, where Mia reveals some of her past to Dexter. They spend time at her apartment, where she reveals her trophy collection of items taken from her victims, stored in a music box. Mia goes to shower and leaves the door open, but Dexter forgoes this apparent advance to kill Lowell.

"Murder Horny"[]

Dexter later calls Mia to ask her out for a date, and they agree on bowling. The two of them bond over both being loners who can't be honest about who they really are. Mia invites Dexter to a wine bar that evening, but before they part ways, she asks if he'd be interested in working together on a kill. Dexter later jokes that she specifically wants to target sexual predators who drive for ride-share companies, but Mia reveals that "any driver will do," since she doesn't care if the victims are actually criminals or not. As such, Dexter realizes she has no moral code.

When Mia wants to kill someone that night, Dexter sabotages her attempt by making excuses about how she is ill-prepared. Mia then leaves to kill someone else; she picks up Marc at a bar, takes him to her apartment, and prepares to torture him. Meanwhile, Dexter plans to orchestrate her arrest. He breaks in and plants Ryan Foster's watch among her trophies, and via Dexter's anonymous tip, police arrest Mia and rescue Marc. The media covers "Lady Vengeance's" capture, and Foster's watch links her to his murder (it was really Harrison's doing).

At the prison where Mia is being held, Charley arrives posing as her lawyer. Mia insists that she won't snitch or ask for help, yet Charley reassures her that her time there will be "as comfortable and short as possible."

"Cats and Mouse"[]

Marc gives a statement to Detectives Claudette Wallace and Melvin Oliva about his encounter with Mia. It's noted that Mia's described behavior doesn't match Foster's rage-filled murder, and Mia called Marc her "first kill in New York City," which contradicts Foster having died a week earlier. Angel Batista suggests they show Mia a photo of Dexter to see if she recognizes him, and to indicate Dexter planted the watch.

Meanwhile, Charley offers a man at a horse race money, asking if he needs a "friend," to which he agrees. That evening, the same man sneaks into Mia's cell and strangles her to death with a bedsheet, preventing her from snitching, then hangs her body to stage a suicide. He poses as a responding guard and helps remove Mia's body. He checks for a pulse, telling the warden she's dead before apologetically turning to a present Batista.

Post-Death[]

Dexter: Mia is dead, Would she really take her own life? Or maybe they took Gemini's warning to heart and handled it, silenced her before she could implicate Prater and the group. Is this what they mean by fight or flight?
Harry: If those bastards had Mia killed, they won't hesitate to do the same to you.
~ Dexter on Mia's death.

Dexter hears on the radio that Mia is dead as he drives to a helicopter landing pad where Prater, Charley, and Al are waiting. Dexter wonders if they killed Mia to silence her and what this means for him. Meanwhile, Batista suspects Dexter killed Mia and made it look suicidal, since the cell block cameras mysteriously went out at the same time. Claudette notes that Mia's fingerprints were on all the trophies except Ryan's watch.

When Dexter is trapped in Prater's trophy collection, he finds Mia's file among Prater's serial killer files and a dossier on Charley with photos of her bribing a guard to kill Mia. When Charley captures Harrison, Dexter shows her this and threatens to AirDrop it to every cop at the 10th Annual Gala. He offers to destroy it if she releases Harrison, to which Charley agrees and abandons Prater because of his betrayal.

Victims[]

Victims killed by Mia LaPierre

Killed[]

Mia has killed at least 7 people, all of whom were reported as sexual predators or abusers.

  • Mrs. Lapierre's boyfriend - Her first kill, after learning he abused her younger sister
  • Five other predators - Along the East Coast
  • Frederic Goodwin - A discharged soldier (misconduct with women), killed by bludgeoning with his eyes removed

Attempted[]

  • Marc - A man Mia seduces at a bar. She brings him to her apartment and knocks him unconscious with a wine bottle. When he wakes up, he's tied to an X-shaped frame. Mia shows him torture tools and threatens to burn his eyes out. Just before she can hurt him, police arrive (called by Dexter to save Marc and arrest Mia for Ryan Foster's murder). Marc is freed and Mia is arrested.

Quotes[]

I'm not one of your pervy art pieces.
~ Mia to Lowell, the "Tattoo Collector."
Mia: In the first grade, there was this bowl-cut kid who annoyed me, so I hit him the head with my library book and I stuck thumbtacks into his face. If I had normal parents, who believed in therapy, maybe I would have been diagnosed with some fancy personality disorder. Instead… they told me to "stop being so angry all the time". When I was 15, I found ballet. It is a punishing practice. Gave me a release for all that pent-up aggression. And I was good enough, that I got into a dance academy out of town. Away from my mother's new boyfriend… the way that creep looked at me.
Dexter: But you got out of there.
Mia: I did… Hazel didn't. I thought she was too young… and when I came back for the summer, I found out… and I killed the guy. And I gotta tell you… much better release than the ballet.
~ Mia explaining her story to Dexter Morgan.
It sucks when you can't be honest about who you are with the people you're closest to, because you know that they would turn their back on you.
~ Mia to Dexter, who ironically happens to be hiding as Ronald Schmidt.
Mia: Don't tell me you were into all that "Lady Vengeance" crap. That's the media always trying to find some deep meaning in what I do. You and Al and Lowell don't have to have some noble reason for the people you choose to kill. You know what really annoys me? That society doesn't think that a woman could possibly just enjoy murder. She has to be some crusader – a victim who fights back.
Dexter: So your trophies, those men you killed… were innocent?
Mia: I mean, define 'innocent'. But yeah, the media still labeled most of them predators. But the truth is… I'm the predator.
~ Mia revealing to Dexter that she has no moral code.
You're gonna be my first kill in New York City. Just your luck, huh? Don't worry: once the lye burns holes through your corneas, you won't be able to see what I'm about to do to you. You will feel it, though.
~ Mia to Marc, planning to torture and kill him.
Look, I fucked up. I know the game. I'm not gonna ask for help, if that's what you're worried about. I'm certainly not going to do anything stupid like ask for money or make threats.

Trivia[]

  • Fans have compared Mia Lapierre and Lila West because they look similar (pale skin, dark hair) and are both instantly drawn to Dexter.
  • Mia's nickname of "Lady Vengeance" reveals that her gender is publicly known. In "Call Me Red," she says she hates this press-given name, and an article confirms her gender is public knowledge.
  • Mia's trophy collection consists of two sets of dog tags; a woven bracelet; a keychain; a utility knife; a belt buckle; two rings and a pair of cufflinks; a tie clip (from Marc); and a watch (from Ryan Foster; planted by Dexter).
  • She is the 4th criminal Dexter calls the police on instead of killing them. The 1st is Paul Bennett, the 2nd is Joe Jensen, and the 3rd is Hannah McKay. She is also the second love interest of Dexter's to be arrested, following Hannah.
