Oh, man! I can't believe you figured it out! Eleanor, you suck!
~ Michael after the Good Place ruse is exposed

Michael is one of the main characters of The Good Place. He served as the main antagonist of Season 1 and first half of Season 2, an anti-hero in the remaining half of the season, and one of the protagonists of Season 3 and Season 4.

He was portrayed by Ted Danson in his first villainous role.

Personality

Michael used to be an ambitious demon, wanting to impress Shawn and the other demons by creating a brand-new torture for humans damned to the Bad Place. He was also highly resourceful, researching each of Eleanor, Jason, Tahani and Chidi's flaws and planning it for his fake Good Place project. He convinced the demons of the Bad Place to participate in it for more fun than anything since the beginning of time. His arrogance led him to thinking humans could be willingly able to torture each other.

Michael exuded nervousness and frivolousness while managing the humans, fooling them into thinking he can be fooled as he slowly gained their trust. But once his true face was revealed, Michael dropped this mask as he cheerfully condemned the four humans into loops of tortures.

All this begun to change after Vicky threatened to spill the beans to Shawn and "retiring" him, forcing him to ally with the humans in order to fool Shawn. After subsequent lessons from Chidi about ethics, morality and what it means to be a human, Michael slowly dropped this qualities and became one of the biggest allies of Team Cockroach, rebelling against Shawn, the Bad Place and eventually the entire afterlife in order to give humans a fair chance of entering the Good Place.

Powers and Abilities

  • Immortality: As an Immortal Being, Michael cannot die.
  • Extra-Dimensional Vision: Michael can see in 9 different dimensions.
  • Aura Reading: Michael has the ability to read auras and energy fields, which allows him to see different traits and certain information about objects and other people.
  • Memory Manipulation: Michael can erase the memories of any deceased human, from suppressing the moments right before death to newly-formed memories in the afterlife.
  • Reality Warping: Michael can alter the reality of the afterlife to anything he desires, however this is most likely restricted to just the neighborhood he himself has created.
  • Simulation Projection: Michael is able to construct any type of artificial simulation he desires no matter how complex.
  • Molecular Combustion: Michael can also speed up molecules to the point they explode. He uses this on a vase as a demonstration to Chidi, and then on the motorcycle Jason wished for.

Michael couldn't use these powers while on Earth, possibly due to being restricted to the space-time's 4 dimensions than the afterlife's nine.

Biography

Past

Michael was created at the beginning of time itself. After serving eons as one of the Bad Place's torturers, and after mentoring from Shawn, Michael decided to use his talents at designing neighborhoods for the Bad Place. Eventually after encouragement of the other demons, Michael designed the Neighborhood 12358W in order to revolutionise the torture system, which till that point was solely conducted by demons onto humans. Michael's goal in designing the Neighborhood is to introduce a system where humans with sufficient mismatches can torture each other with the demons' minimal input. He analysed the lives of Eleanor Shellstrop, Chidi Anagonye, Tahani Al-Jamil and Jason Mendoza and figured out the four humans' biggest weaknesses: Eleanor's arrogance, Chidi's indecisivity, Tahani's inferiority-superiority complex and Jason's criminal history in order to pit themselves against each other. To make the ruse real, Michael stole one of the Good Janets from the warehouse due to Bad Janets being functionally incapable of acting good.

Throughout the Show

After getting the four humans' souls, Michael lied to all of them that they are in the Good Place, while they actually went to the Bad Place. He also tricked Jason and Eleanor into thinking they went into the Good Place by mistake, so that their actions can be used for the Neighborhood's chaos sequence to trouble them.
