Michael Gray is the secondary antagonist in the BBC drama Peaky Blinders. He is the estranged son of Polly Gray who ends up being reunited with her and becoming involved in her family's criminal activities. He is the archenemy of Father John Hughes.
Biography[]
Michael was taken away from his mother by parish authorities when he was young. Years later Polly's nephew Thomas Shelby felt sorry for her and found Michael and reunited them. Michael met his other cousins Arthur and John but Polly tried to keep him from becoming involved in their criminal activities.
When Michael was arrested Polly slept with Chief Inspector Campbell to get him released which he was disgusted by. Polly offered Michael a payout to leave but he decided to stay to be with her and because he wanted to make "real money" with Tommy.
Later Michael killed Father John Hughes with Tommy's approval which left Polly furious at her nephew. Michael stood by Tommy during his feud with Luca Changratta and refused to leave to Australia with his mother. When Michael learned Polly had been plotting with Luca he struggled with conflicting loyalties but decided to keep quiet to protect his mother.
It was ultimately revealed Polly and Tommy were playing Luca who was killed by them. Since Michael did not warn Tommy the trust between them becomes strained.
Michael annoyed Tommy further by losing Shelby Company Limited huge profits. Tommy also got word from the IRA that Michael was a traitor. and plotting against him with a rival gang. When Michael proposed a plan which included him taking over the family business and basically everyone else retiring Tommy exiled him and warned him not to come back.
Michael swore revenge on Tommy after Polly was killed by the IRA as he blamed his cousin for his mother's death. This led to Tommy killing him.
