Michael Lee is an anti-villainous protagonist in HBO's The Wire.
He is a teenager living in West Baltimore. He originally worked as a corner kid under Preston "Bodie" Broadus before being forced to work as an assassin for Marlo Stanfield in order to protect his adoptive younger brother, Bug. He eventually goes rogue and takes up Omar Little's mantle.
He was portrayed by Tristin Wilds.
Personality[]
Michael is more emotionally distant than any of his three friends and dislikes affection from adult men due to being molested by his stepfather when he was younger, hence why he is wary of his boxing coach, Dennis "Cutty" Wise, and his math teacher Roland Pryzbylewski. He is protective of his adoptive younger brother Bug and his friend Dukie, willing to become an enforcer for Marlo Stanfield to prevent his stepfather from abusing Bug as he did to him when he was Bug's age.
After becoming an enforcer for the Stanfield Organization, Michael becomes much more aggressive even outside of Marlo's orders, beating on Kenard after he stole from Namond. However, Michael still has more of a conscience than Chris Partlow or Snoop, being horrified when Snoop and Chris kill Junebug and his entire family simply because Junebug spread a rumor that Marlo is gay. His contempt for Marlo's brutality is part of what prompts Michael to leave the Stanfield Organization.
Biography[]
Background[]
Michael was born on July 15, 1993, to Raylene Lee and an unknown father who abandoned the child. His mother neglected him throughout his childhood due to her drug addiction, and his stepfather, Devar Manigault, molested him when he was around nine years old. At some point, he became close friends with Namond Brice, Randy Wagstaff, and Dukie Williams.
Season 4[]
Michael and his friends are introduced soon before the start of the school year. He's temporarily working under Bodie Broadus, who has set out on his own after the collapse of the Barksdale Organization. Marlo Stanfield offers Michael and several other boys money for school clothes to buy their loyalty away from Bodie/show them the money that can be earned in his organization. Michael rejects Marlo's money and stares Marlo down when he confronts him. Marlo, seeing that Michael, who's only fourteen years old, dares to stare down a notorious drug kingpin like himself, is impressed with him. Later, when Michael's friends question his refusal of the money, Michael explains that it's because he doesn't want to feel like he owes anyone. To pay for school clothes for himself and Bug, he takes over Namond's job as a runner to make some extra money. Sensing promise in Michael, Bodie offers to employ him permanently, which he also refuses.
Michael also shows promise in boxing, which his coach, Cutty, takes notice of and encourages. Cutty even offers to take him to a professional fight, which he turns down until he learns that Justin, another kid in the gym, will also be going; as a result of being molested, Michael is uncomfortable being alone with adult men. When Cutty drives them home, Michael gets out early after Justin is dropped off so he doesn't have to be alone with Cutty.
