Welcome! Welcome! Look everyone, we have a visitor! (Laughter and faint movement from statues.) Oh, stop laughing! Our guest may not look like much, but Fortune favours the gold... I mean bold! My dear new friend, Midas's Cave serves a certain class of clientele. If you can meet those standards, welcome! If not... Please, look around. You are my guest here. I will leave you to peruse. Should you have any questions, Midas is here to help!
~ Midas upon meeting the player for the first time.

Midas is a minor antagonist of the 2022 roguelike action-adventure game Cult of the Lamb. He is the worshipper of unknown gods related to fortune and riches and the curator of Midas' Cave.

Personality[]

Midas always acts friendly when interacting with the player, although this kindness is clearly not genuine seeing as how despite his seemingly helpful demeanor to the player, it is only to get them to sacrifice followers and gold. This is especially obvious in the "Relics of the Old Faith" update, where after beginning the post-game, Midas will periodically appear in dungeons to mock the Lamb's perceived charity and poor appearance before ransacking them and leaving. As such, he appears more as a conman simply doing business without any care or respect for their victim.

It's very obvious that Midas is extremely greedy, especially with his obsession towards gold, and he has his own power to transmute living creatures into malleable golden statues of their forms. These statues appear to retain some sense of sentience, and are seen laughing periodically, however it is unknown if they are doing it in their own will or if their mind is on some kind of influence.

Despite his cruel and arrogant nature, Midas seems to genuinely believe and worship whatever gods he prays to in his cave, real or not. It is likely this is only to further his own riches and an excuse for his cruelty though, since sacrificed followers do not appear to cause any changes to Midas or the cave. Midas has his own crown as well, a symbol of deity in Cult of the Lamb, however due to it looking visually different from every other crown in the game, it's more likely it is just to highlight his riches and arrogance.

Biography[]

When the Lamb enters his cave for the first time, Midas greets them, inviting them to spend their gold for (the chance of) higher rewards, and telling the player how to navigate the area.

If the Lamb decides to start sacrificing followers to Midas, the latter will proceed to turn the followers into golden statues to add to his collection and reward the Lamb with a Holy Talisman fragment for each cultist sacrificed to him, for a total of 4.

Midas has several post-game encounters. The first of these being when the player returns to Darkwood for the first time, Midas will appear midway to attack the player and ransack a sizeable portion of their money before escaping. He will repeat this in Anchordeep, before the player finally has a chance to retaliate when he appears in Silk Cradle. Midas will not steal from the player again after he is attacked himself.

Quotes[]

This is where we trust our precious Gold to the Gods. Sometimes in their benevolence they give back more. Other times, it is lost. But it is not for us mere mortals to question... present company excluded, of course. But for the use of such a service, the organisation would require a... let's call it a donation. For someone of your talents, shall we say 10 Gold Bars?
~ Midas after the Lamb interacts with the donation well.
Oh, you are most generous! I would have taken half that amount. You really don't know how to negotiate, do you? The well is at your disposal, make as much use of it as you will. May Fortune be kind!
~ Midas after the Lamb pays 10 Gold Bars for the well.
Now I'm sure great Leaders such as yourself get plenty of Devotion from your Followers for free. But surely a visionary like you could always use... more? We can offer you our Devotion for a great price! The price goes up the more you want it, and down the longer you leave it. The question, really, is how long can you resist?
~ Midas after the Lamb approaches the devotion vending machine.
Wonderful! Wonderful! Yes, much better! I have a few more of these, if you are willing to help me grow my collection.
~ Midas after the Lamb sacrifices the first follower.
Another addition to my gallery - how wonderful! I have a few more of these, if you are willing to help me grow my collection.
~ Midas after the Lamb sacrifices the second follower.
Oh, this one has turned out particularly well! This has become a most agreeable arrangement!
~ Midas after the Lamb sacrifices the third follower.
Magnificent! Bravo! BRAVO! Sadly, this is the last piece I have. Thank you for helping me to grow my little collection here. You are indeed a most generous and gracious Lamb.
~ Midas after the Lamb sacrifices the fourth follower.
Ohoho! Hello there, valued client. My, such tatty clothing! It's been an age since I've left home, but I was compelled. What a rich world! Sinister and vibrant and RICH! And isn't charity the greatest virtue?
~ Midas at Darkwood.
Esteemed patron, what a small world! Fancy seeing you again. What is that smell? Do you never wash? Ohoho! Take care not to get lost. Things seem to get lost around here all the time... so easy to misplace one's Gold!
~ Midas at Anchordeep.
Cherished customer, what are the chances we'd run into each other again? I do admire how you don't care for appearances. Ohoho! I, on the other hand, am respectable, elegant, and at all times beautiful! Now I'll just take care of some business...
~ Midas at Silk Cradle.
Ah! Stop that!
~ Midas when attacked.
Eek! Ouchie! Ow!
~ Ditto.

Trivia[]

  • Midas is named after the mythological King Midas, who could turn whatever he touched into gold.
  • It's possible that the people already turned into golden statues by Midas are his own followers.
  • The mere existence of Midas' gods contradicts the fact that the Bishops of the Old Faith and The One Who Waits are supposed to be the last remaining deities in the Lands of the Old Faith. This contradiction could be explained by most not knowing that those gods exist (since Midas is shown to be their only worshipper) or perhaps they're such minor deities that they aren't even considered by most.
    • Alternatively, it's possible that Midas' Cave doesn't count as part of the Lands of the Old Faith.
    • Another possibility is that Midas' gods don't exist at all and that they're something he made up as part of a scam religion to obtain gold.
  • Midas' Cave features a lone giant golden statue; aside from its size, this statue is of note because it is the only one that the player can interact with. When interacted, the statue repeats the following: "... bottom dweller he was, muck eating prey... sparkling gold one day found amongst the dregs, lost by a pirate with many legs... pretty shiny prize for all... they all want... they all want... they all want... nothing remains... blood washes away in the tide... he waits, waits and then takes... even muck eaters have teeth... there is no help for me now..." Although it is hard to decipher, it's possible that it's connected with Midas' origins.
    • It's possible that the "pirate with many legs" could refer to Plimbo, another NPC in-game who is a pirate/sailor grasshopper. However, it should be noted that while he possesses two pairs of arms, he only has one pair of legs.
    • It should be noted that following the "Relics of the Old Faith" update, this particular statue was removed, making it unclear whether it and its words have any relevance to the game's canon.
    • If this passage indeed refers to Midas, it heavily implies he lures his 'followers' with the promise of his own gold, before waiting to take something from them - most likely him transforming them into a statue.
  • Midas and Heket are similar in that they both give people a fate worse than death, with Midas turning them into golden statues and Heket fusing them with giant mushrooms.
