Migg is the main antagonist of the Inside No. 9 episode "Tom & Gerri".

He was a former homeless man who convinced Tom to allow him to stay in his flat, all the while slowly gaslighting him into a deep state of insanity by taking advantage of his grief in order to make a better life for himself.

He was portrayed by series co-creator Steve Pemberton, who also played Eddie, Graham, Professor Squires, Adrian, Galen, The Doctor, Stan and The Lift Attendant in the same series, as well as Pauline Campbell-Jones, Harvey Denton, Herr Lipp, Pop and Lemuel in The League of Gentlemen, and David Sowerbutts, Oscar Lomax, Hattie and Dr. Friedrich Ehrlichmann in Psychoville.

Biography[]

Migg was a homeless man who sat outside of Tom and Gerri's flat, with the two regularly passing him by. On one night however Tom dropped his wallet after walking Gerri to the train station so she could get to her latest audition and Migg found it and pressed on Tom's buzzer to request he let him up to return it. Tom allows this and Migg convinces him into letting him stay the night. The two bond quickly and begin drinking over the night until Tom passes out drunk, at which point Migg makes himself at home and has a bath. Tom sleeps in and misses work and leaves the flat a mess prompting Gerri who had returned home to confront Tom on what had happened and was horrified to learn he invited a stranger into their home, after a heated argument Gerri left and Migg convinced Tom to stay home and stay off work for a while.

The two men lounged around day after day drinking and playing board games with Tom steadily growing more and more dishevelled and broken while Migg appeared to getting his life back on track and making himself a steady career as a care worker, all the while gaslighting Tom and making him go deeper into the hole he was already falling into, even doing things such as hiding bills and unemployment release funds from Tom resulting in them getting the electricity cut off. At his lowest point Gerri returned to Tom and explained to him that Migg wasn't real and to get his life back together he'd need to kill him and thus destroy the part of his mind keeping him trapped in a perpetual state of misery. Tom is soon confronted by Migg and in a fit of fury kills him by drowning him in the bathtub.

A few mornings later Tom was visited by his best friend and colleague Stevie who was happy to see Tom getting into a more stable and happy state of mind however was saddened and disturbed by how Tom was claiming to still see Gerri, explaining to him that she died weeks prior to the episode's events and that Tom's leave of absence and actions throughout the episode where the result of her death. Tom refused to believe it however and remained in denial over his girlfriend's death, Stevie then entered the toilet to relieve himself and was horrified to find Migg's body. When he confronted Tom over this and asked what he did Tom in a reassuring tone told him that it was just Migg and he wasn't real before ushering him back into the living room, telling him that "Gerri's put the kettle on."

Personality[]

Migg was a very charismatic and intelligent man however a manipulative and selfish one at the same time. Essentially using Tom to get his own home and slowly breaking the man until he crumbled for his own gain. He wasn't completely without reason however as he did at least appear to have some amount of care and gratefulness for Tom, even offering him some of the money he made himself out of pity after Tom broke down over having their electricity cut off.

Appearance[]

Migg was a tall, handsome man with a broad build with blue eyes and long, thick brown hair who initially had a ragged and unkempt appearance due to being homeless, however after moving in with Tom cleaned himself up and built up an entirely new wardrobe, shaving his beard into a more styled, short look and tying his hair back. He adopted casual summer suits at this time as well.

Trivia[]

  • Migg as a character originated from a play Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton originally wrote in the early 90s while studying at university and sharing a flat. The story came to be from Reece growing increasingly stressed and upset from his inability to secure part time work and his time on a mentally draining restart course, during which time he and Steve would supposedly lounge around the flat for most of their time. This time in their lives also was responsible for the creation of League of Gentlemen characters Pauline Campbell-Jones and Papa Lazarou.
