Mikari Baba are mythological monsters from Japanese folklore and are related to the world-wide concept of a hag, a type of supernatural creature envisioned as the spirit of an ugly old woman with great supernatural powers.
Biography[]
Mikari Baba are depicted as disturbing old women with a single eye who carry a torch in their mouth and travel from home to home begging for rice or coats. They are exceptionally greedy spirits and thus never find any satisfaction even when given such items. They will raid areas and steal entire patches of rice, not sparing a single grain and endangering entire villages as in their greedy pursuits, they often set large fires due to their torches touching the ground.
Mikari Baba will also sometimes decide to "borrow" human eyes, making them exceptionally unwelcome entities. They are thankfully only believed to appear on certain days of the year (always during winter) and can be frightened away by items that have many holes.
Countermeasures[]
Great care is also made on days when Mikari Baba are active to ensure items the spirits favor are hidden away or properly protected as even a single stray grain of rice would risk attracting the greedy spirits.
