~ Mikey's line before killing Brendan Filone. |
Michael "Mikey" Palmice, Sr. is a major antagonist of the first season of the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.
He was a sadistic yet loyal underling and consigliere to Junior Soprano who is put at odds with Caporegime and nephew of Junior, Tony Soprano. Alongside Junior and Chucky Signore, Mikey planned to have Tony assassinated in order to show their power in the family.
He was portrayed by Al Sapienza.
Biography[]
When Tony's nephew Christopher Moltisanti begins highjacking from Comley Trucking who pay Junior protection, Mikey is ordered by Junior to kill Christopher's friend Brendan Filone who helped Chris in the highjacking. Chris was outraged by Brendan’s death and wanted to kill Mikey, however Tony forbade him from doing so and attacked Mikey instead. He then made peace with Junior by making him boss of the family (but in reality, Tony is setting Junior up as a figurehead to protect himself from legal ramifications).
Mikey is tasked with killing "Rusty Irish", a drug dealer who sold to the grandson of Junior's tailor, causing him to kill himself by jumping off of a bridge during his unaware state. Mikey took great joy in this killing and bribed some witnesses to say it was a suicide.
When Junior discovers Tony has been undermining his authority, Mikey is the one to arrange the failed hit. Mikey is killed as a result of the war between Tony and Junior when he is executed by Chris and Paulie Gualtieri. Before he dies, Mikey tries to save himself by saying Junior was the one to kill Brendan.
In the episode "From Where to Eternity", Christopher almost dies from an assassination attempt and is sent to the hospital. Christopher is pronounced clinically dead, but is soon brought back to life. Christopher tells Tony and Paulie that he went to hell, and saw Mikey there. In the same episode, a psychic seemingly communicates with Mikey, speaking to Paulie through the psychic. Mikey asks Paulie "if the poison ivy still itches", referring to an actual event of Paulie touching poison ivy while chasing down and killing Mikey in the past.
Personality[]
Mikey Palmice was outwardly a friendly and overtly enthusiastic member of Junior's crew, but this only hid the true nature of Mikey: a sadistic and cruel sociopath.
He took sadistic pleasure in brutalizing and murdering anyone who displeased his boss, often mocking and jeering victims before he killed them. He was particularly eager to kill Junior's nephew Tony Soprano, who he had an intense dislike of for years, though Junior was reluctant to take such an action until Tony's mother Livia Soprano manipulated Junior into taking action by mentioning that Tony was in therapy.
Mikey was valued by Junior for his strict adherence to his orders and loyalty to him, but he wasn't particularly well liked by the other gangsters, particularly by Tony Soprano and Christopher Moltisanti, who viewed him as Junior's lackey and a sycophant. He was also viewed as creepy and off-putting by other crew members, like Jackie Aprile Sr. He was even described by other capos as a "disease" due to his nature as a violent sociopath.
Despite all of his heinous acts, Mikey did have a tender side. He did genuinely love his wife JoJo and did his best to keep her as far away from mafia dealings as he could. But even then, their relationship was strained, as he often loafed around and was demanding of her, which often led to tensions between the two.
In the end, Mikey was a coward. He shamelessly begged Chris and Paulie for his life, when he knew full well that they had every intention to kill him and weren't going to show mercy.
