Mileena is a major antagonist in the Mortal Kombat: Titan Trilogy.
Similar to her previous counterpart, she was a genetic experiment from Shang Tsung's Flesh Pits to serve as a mutated clone "sibling" to Kitana, being generated through a mixture of Edenian and Tarkatan DNA and magic. Considering herself Shao Kahn's heir, Mileena declared herself Kahn of Outworld, and would fight a civil war with Kotal Kahn for the throne.
In Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat X, she was voiced by Karen Strassman, who also voiced Heinkel Wolfe in Hellsing Ultimate, Alexia Ashford in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri in Fate/Zero, ARIA in Killer Instinct (2013), Poison in Street Fighter IV, Midler in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and Rouge the Bat in Sonic the Hedgehog.
In Mortal Kombat 11, she was voiced by Kari Wahlgren, who also voiced Mevia in Minecraft: Story Mode, Shelke Rui in Dirge of Cerberus, Darth Phobos in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Haruko Haruhara in FLCL, Anemone in Eureka Seven, Diva in Blood+, Rip Van Winkle in Hellsing Ultimate, Tayuya in Naruto, Marianne vi Britannia in Code Geass and Saber Alter in Fate/stay Night: Heaven's Feel. Both Strassman and Walhgren voiced her "sister", the revenant Kitana in the same games.
Biography[]
Mortal Kombat 9[]
Mileena was created by Shang Tsung on behalf of Shao Kahn, who wished to create a far more deadly replacement for his step-daughter, Kitana. Mileena is first discovered by Kitana in Shang Tsung's Flesh Pits when the Princess stumbles upon a sleeping clone lying on a table. Upon awakening, Mileena refers to Kitana as "Sister" and mockingly invites her to join her as family. Horrified by Mileena's grotesque creation, Kitana denounces her as a monstrosity and defeats her in battle.
When Kitana confronts Shao Kahn about the abomination, the Emperor reveals he has been aware of Mileena all along. Enraged by Kitana's alliance with Raiden and the Earthrealm warriors, he sentences her to execution and instructs Shang Tsung to bring his "true daughter" from the Flesh Pits. This leads Jade to attempt a rescue, but after the guards are alerted, Kitana urges Jade to flee and seek help. Later, in the Wastelands, Mileena intercepts Jade, taunting her about Kitana's imminent execution and sarcastically inviting her to a "going away celebration" for her sister. After defeating Mileena, Jade declares that she is more of a sister to Kitana than Mileena could ever be. When the Earthrealm warriors arrive, Smoke mistakes Mileena for Kitana, unaware of her status as Kitana’s clone. This misunderstanding leads him to attack Jade before she can clarify the situation. Taking advantage of the chaos, Mileena escapes. She later reappears in the coliseum, standing at Shao Kahn’s side.
Following Shao Kahn’s defeat by Liu Kang, Baraka suggests that Mileena is the next in line to rule. However, Shao Kahn, having survived, reclaims his throne, revealing that Quan Chi healed his injuries. Mileena immediately bows to her father, reaffirming her loyalty. During the Earthrealm invasion, Mileena is seen by Kurtis Stryker and Kabal amidst the carnage on the streets of New York. While Stryker recognizes her as an enemy, Kabal hesitates, distracted by her scant attire. Stryker confronts Mileena, and the two engage in combat, with Stryker ultimately emerging victorious.
After Kabal is severely burned by Kintaro and later revived by Kano, he coerces the Black Dragon thug into guiding him to Shao Kahn’s throne room. Upon his arrival, Mileena enters the room alongside Lin Kuei cyborgs and Tarkatans, carrying the corpse of Motaro. She informs Shao Kahn that Raiden has killed the Centaur General. While the Emperor transfers Shang Tsung’s essence into the bewitched Queen Sindel, Kabal attempts to attack him. However, Noob Saibot and Mileena intercept him. Despite the odds, Kabal defeats them both in a two-on-one battle and escapes back to Earthrealm. Mileena is not seen again after her defeat by Kabal.
Mortal Kombat X (Comics)[]
After Shao Kahn's death, Mileena ascended to the throne as the new Empress of Outworld. Early in her reign, she humiliated the Kytinn, D’Vorah, by forcing her to kneel and kiss her boot, only to cruelly kick her jaw and mockingly declare her a humble servant. Mileena was delighted by D’Vorah’s lack of resistance.
Mileena's rule proved even more tyrannical than Shao Kahn’s, earning her the title "Mad Empress" as her erratic leadership drove Outworld to the brink of collapse. Her reign was eventually usurped by Kotal Kahn, who, with Reptile's aid, staged a coup d’état. Mileena was captured and imprisoned, though she later escaped with Tanya's help. She was joined by Reiko, a former general of Outworld's army, and Rain, an Edenian traitor. Together, the trio went into hiding for ten years. During this time, Mileena took Reiko as her lover and trusted advisor, unaware that he was manipulating her for his own ends.
Reiko informed Mileena that the Red Dragon had agreed to support her cause, much to her delight. She later persuaded Goro to join her rebellion, exploiting his desire for revenge against Kotal Kahn for diminishing the Shokan’s status. As Goro rallied the Red Dragon and Kotal Kahn prepared to avenge his father’s death, Mileena confided in Reiko about her plans to reclaim the throne. However, Reiko warned her that Goro might betray her after turning against Kotal. Furious at the prospect of treachery, Mileena vowed to devour Goro’s face and clung to Reiko, declaring him the only one she could trust.
After Kotal Kahn defeated and maimed Goro, Mileena's hideout in the Golden Desert was destroyed, though she and Reiko escaped. Fleeing to her keep in the Setian Valley, Mileena tended to Rain, whose body had been badly burned. Speaking to his comatose form, she expressed confidence that Kintaro’s Shokan-Oni alliance would never surrender and believed Kotal Kahn’s death was imminent, paving the way for her return to power. Her plans were interrupted when Ermac arrived, reporting on Kotal's alliance with the Black Dragon. Enraged, Mileena smashed a vase and ordered an immediate attack, demanding to know Reiko’s whereabouts.
Ermac informed her that Reiko was on Shang Tsung's Island. At that moment, Rain regained consciousness and revealed that Reiko was plotting against her with Havik, a cleric whom Mileena had trusted to strengthen their cause with his sorcery. Distraught by yet another betrayal, Mileena admitted that she was not spiritual but had relied on Reiko’s judgment. She asked Ermac if any of the thousands of souls within him could shed light on Havik’s nature, but Ermac could only express confusion. Overwhelmed, Mileena lamented being labeled paranoid before rallying the Tarkatans to march on Shang Tsung's Island.
Upon arriving at the island, Mileena found Kotal Kahn and Reiko’s forces locked in battle. Leading her Tarkatan horde onto the beach, she declared that neither Kotal nor Reiko would kill each other, as the privilege of their deaths belonged solely to the true Empress of Outworld.
Mortal Kombat X[]
Five years before the main events of the storyline, Mileena confronts Kotal Kahn, D'Vorah, and Reptile after discovering their conspiracy to dethrone her. Reptile argues that her claim to the throne is illegitimate, as she is an artificial creation and not Shao Kahn’s biological daughter. Mileena counters by asserting that she is Shao Kahn’s heir by decree. Kotal pleads with her one final time to heed his advice, but she refuses and orders a Tarkatan to kill him. However, Ermac betrays her, declaring his loyalty to whoever he chooses, and they engage in battle. Kotal Kahn's forces decimate Mileena’s army, including Baraka, and she is captured. Kotal Kahn assumes the throne of Outworld as its new emperor.
Later, Mileena is freed by a group that includes Tanya and begins a rebellion to reclaim her throne. In the present day, Mileena launches a surprise attack on Kotal Kahn in Z’Unkahrah with the aid of Rain, Tanya, and Kano, whom she hired to assassinate him. Despite their efforts, all four are defeated by the emperor. As Kotal Kahn prepares to execute her, Mileena uses Shinnok’s amulet to protect herself but collapses from the strain, forcing Rain to flee with her. Lacking the skill to wield the amulet effectively, Mileena inadvertently destroys Li Mei’s village, displacing its residents and forcing them to seek refuge in Earthrealm. Rain later reveals that using the amulet is killing Mileena slowly, a calculated part of his plan to eliminate both her and Kotal Kahn, leaving the throne of Outworld for himself.
The Special Forces learn of Mileena’s location from Kano, who is captured during the events. Cassie Cage’s team is sent to the Kuatan Jungle, accompanied by Kotal Kahn’s forces, to retrieve Shinnok’s amulet. Mileena encounters D’Vorah and Cassie in her tent as they attempt to steal the artifact. She fights D’Vorah but is ultimately defeated and brought before Kotal Kahn. Deeming her unworthy of his blade, Kotal orders D’Vorah to carry out the execution. D’Vorah kills Mileena by releasing flesh-eating parasites through a kiss, as Cassie and her team look on in horror.
Mortal Kombat 11[]
Story Mode[]
A time-displaced Shao Kahn, along with other Outworld and Earthrealm champions, is brought into the present day. Upon discovering that his former general, Kotal Kahn, has become the Emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn initiates a battle between his forces and Kotal’s. Despite his might, Shao Kahn is forced to retreat and is saved by D’Vorah. Shao Kahn, bewildered by D’Vorah’s assistance given his role in the near extinction of her race, demands an explanation. Kollector intervenes, informing Shao Kahn of his future self’s attempt to merge Earthrealm and Outworld, an act that provoked the Elder Gods to intervene and kill him. Kollector also reveals that Mileena succeeded him as ruler of Outworld following his death. However, their discussion is interrupted by D’Vorah, who admits to Shao Kahn that she executed Mileena during Kotal Kahn’s reign. Enraged by this revelation, Shao Kahn charges at D’Vorah with the intent to kill her but is stopped by Kronika, the Keeper of Time.
DLC[]
Mileena appears as a non-canon DLC character, having been transported to the present. Mileena is depicted as continuing her vendetta against her "sister" Kitana, whom had taken her place on Outworld's throne, as well as Kotal. She also despises Rain, whom she considers a traitor who left Tanya for dead, and attempts to find a way to resurrect her. In her own ending, after defeating Kronika and becoming Time's Keeper, Mileena, considering herself shun by Kitana, elected to wipe her from history and take her place. Mileena, along with her parents Shao Kahn and Sindel ruled the Realms together, with Mileena taking great joy in knowing how all those who knew Kitana now cherish her. However, Mileena also elected to have a heir, and she and Tanya managed to create a daughter.
