Mimic the Octopus is a major antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comic book series. He was once a trusted member of the Diamond Cutters before betraying them to Dr. Eggman, and is the arch-nemesis as well as the former friend of Whisper the Wolf.
Appearance[]
When in his true form, Mimic appears as an anthropomorphic octopus with purple skin, a beak-like mouth, black eyes with white pupils, suction-cups on his hands and feet and tentacles for hair. His beak has wrinkles around the lips and a black marking just above it, making his face look like a skull (this was done on purpose by using his shapeshifting abilities as an attempt to look scarier). He wears a black, tattered poncho and coverings on his arms and legs
While Mimic was still working with the Diamond Cutters, his poncho was much nicer and and he wore black gloves and boots, but didn't have the nasal bone or the lip wrinkles at the time. He also had a mask similar to Whisper's until he betrayed the team.
Personality[]

When working with his former team, Mimic put on a facade of a loyal and trust-worthy comrade. In reality, though, he was a greedy and cowardly individual who only looked out for himself and did not think twice about betraying his team to save his own life, even willing to end one of them himself if it was required.
In the present, Mimic maintained his treacherous nature, using his mastery of disguise to manipulate people into doing whatever he wanted. He's also become obsessed with ending Whisper's life in order to save his own, and still has no remorse for what he did to his former comrades while viewing friendship as a liability. Mimic has also shown a great sense of pride, regretting that both Whisper and Tangle defeated him and left him to rot in prison instead of killing him.
Ironically, Mimic despises being betrayed himself and doesn't trust anybody. If he learns that someone he was working with planned to double-cross them, he will immediately attempt to kill them unless given a good reason not to.
Powers and Abilities[]
Mimic has the ability to instantly disguise himself as different people, including Sonic the Hedgehog and an Egg Pawn, and was quite good at impersonating them. He could even alter these forms somewhat to for added convincing if need be, such as making clothes look torn. He can even copy their voice, also had impressive combat skills and was a master of escape artistry.
He once wielded a hammer-like Wispon designed by Smithy that utilized a blue Wisp to create solid blocks that he and his teammates can use as stepping stones. However, he abandoned it after his Wisp abandoned him. After that, he usually fought with a knife, along with some other weapons such as guns or bombs.
During the raid on the Eggman hub, Mimic utilized a device that was powered by Yellow Power Cores, granting him increased agility and flight.
Weaknesses[]
While Mimic can imitate appearances, He cannot replicate abilities (such as Sonic's speed) or weapons (such as Whisper's Variable Wispon) with his shapeshifting, he also can only copy the appearances of people he’s met, unable to make original forms, despite this Mimic can alter the appearance of the form of the person he takes like recoloring them. In addition, Mimic isn't capable of changing eye color whenever he shapeshifts into someone, such as turning into Tangle, Sonic, or even his former companions, his eye color remains brown.
His shapeshifting is not perfect; notable differences include darker shades of fur, skin and clothing (for robots, he just turns a darker shade of their normal color scheme). The suction cups on his hands, palms, fingers, and feet are also still visible when he shapeshifts, even if he gives himself the appearance of gloves and shoes. He is also able to combine his true appearance with the shapes he takes, namely by showing his true eyes or dry lips.
Trivia[]
- Mimic is based off of the mimic octopus, which can camouflage itself with the environment and impersonate other species, which fits Mimic's abilities and profession.
- Like all the members of the Diamond Cutters, Mimic is based off one of the main operatives of FOXHOUND in the Metal Gear series. In Mimic's case, he is based on Decoy Octopus, who he shared his mastery of disguise and animal theme with.
