The story about the treacherous mercenary named Mimic the Octopus from IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.

Past[]

Mimic was once an actor who wanted to be noticed among his peers, despite only ever being able to book minor roles. His desire to be seen was so much so that he began shapeshifting into his competition, much to their surprise and annoyance. Just as security guards grabbed him and had begun to escort him out of a studio, an army of Badniks consisting of Egg Pawns with Egg Guns, an Egg Hammer and an Egg Walker attacked, signifying the onset of the Eggman War. Hiding behind some rubble while everyone else in the building began to flee for their lives, Mimic shapeshifted into an Egg Pawn, surviving the onslaught.

Burying his grief deep inside himself, he ventured away from conflict as much as he could until he began to see groups of teams from the war shelters starting to fight back against Eggman's army. Again feeling the desire to be noticed and belong, he joined four separate teams over the course of the worldwide discord. He subsequently abandoned all four teams each time he felt that his own survival was being threatened. Eventually, he found a spot to rest near a destroyed Egg Hammer, unwrapping an energy bar and mulling over his belief that his skills were never appreciated by any of his former teams. Upon this notion, he realized that each and every teammate he knew was playing a character, despite none of them knowing that they were pretending in the first place. These experiences in the war created the idea in Mimic's mind that everyone has a little emptiness inside them, and that utilizing activities like the arts or playing hero only serve as a way to cover the void within, as if that darkness is something to be ashamed of. He believes that his previous desires for others and of wanting to be seen were childish and that he should not hide his own "empty void".

As he reverted into his true form to eat, Whisper the Wolf and her Wisp, Orange, witnessed his shapeshifting capabilities and approached him. As Mimic tried to introduce himself to Whisper, she excitedly interrupted him, saying that "they" will love his ability. He inquired who "they" are, and Whisper apologized for cutting him off, introducing herself and Orange to him. She went on to explain that she is part of a mercenary group for hire known as the Diamond Cutters that destroys Eggman bases and "saves the day". At the mention of her team's building, Mimic became more interested. Whisper noted that the team itself severely lacked in stealth and that they could use someone like Mimic. She asked if he is a good actor, and he responded by shifting into Whisper while saying that he is good enough to fool an Eggman battalion, astonishing both her and Orange.

Whisper would then bring Mimic, who was still assuming Whisper's form, to the Diamond Cutters' base out at Clove Sea. As she introduced Mimic to Slinger the Ocelot, Claire Voyance, and Smithy the Lion, they were all baffled by his shapeshifting powers. Reverting to his true form, he complimented them on their base, to which Smithy replied that the base was their reward for taking the hard jobs that no one else wants. Slinger added on by saying that war is great for business, which Smithy berated him for. Mimic's interest was peaked at the mention and notion of rewards, which cemented his decision to officially join the team as their infiltrator. Once he did, the team gave him his own private room and access to a high-quality wardrobe, both of which were unheard of luxuries for him, even before the Eggman War began. He was also given a Blue Wisp companion and Cube Wispon built by Smithy the Lion.

In the first few missions, Mimic was essential to the Diamond Cutters' success, and he did not require any of the others' help. However, during a mission set at a base surrounded by snow, he was surprised that Eggman would leave the base door standing open. Disguised as an Egg Pawn, he pushed aside the surrounding Badniks and advanced past the base gate. This did not go unnoticed by the Egg Walker standing guard, who immediately recognized Mimic as a defect. An Egg Pawn shot at him with its Egg Gun, causing him to shift back into his true form. A nearby Egg Hammer poised to crush him, but before it could do so, Whisper jumped in front of him and shot at the Badnik's hammer wielding arm with her Rocket Wispon. Having spotted the base's main control hub, she told Mimic to deactivate the whole fleet as she and the other Diamond Cutters covered him. After he did so, Claire sensed a platoon approaching the entrance to the base. Whisper excitedly offered to blow the robots up, but Mimic instead decided to shapeshift into Eggman and order the reinforcements to leave. His plan was successful, and the Diamond Cutters praised him for his risky idea.

The missions since then were successful with rare close calls, and Mimic delighted in the opportunities to push his abilities' boundaries. Eventually, Smithy brought the team to a spot in the middle of a forest to bond around a fire. As the other Diamond Cutters happily talked and joked with each other, Mimic sat on in silence, with only his Blue Wisp noticing his annoyed expression. Smithy then proceeded to hand out his newly built Concealers to the others. Whisper asked Mimic what his new mask looked like, but he just stared at the mask in silence. Each of the others then gave small speeches about how much they cared about the rest of their team. Whisper, in particular, told Mimic that she felt reassured when he was watching the others' backs, and she thanked him for completing the Diamond Cutters.

Mimic then left the others under the premise of stretching his legs. As he walked out to a lake, he asked himself if he just craved validation instead of the spotlight. He realized that he could not be his true self around the team because they did not realize what he had done. At that moment, he felt emotionally hurt by the Diamond Cutters' friendship. He feared that once they learned of his true self, they would throw him off the team. Splashing the lake's water on his face, he decided then and there that he could not afford to be vulnerable or fragile. As he walked back to the team, he convinced himself that every word that came out of the Diamond Cutters' mouths was a rehearsed charade; that they were only saying what he wanted to hear until they got what they wanted out of him. Even after coming to the conclusion that the Diamond Cutters could no longer be trusted, he still assisted them during missions.

Diamond Cutters Mission[]

Each of them carried a specialized Wispon designed by Smithy and were partnered with a Wisp to use said Wispon. In Mimic's case, he wielded a hammer powered by a Blue Wisp that could create blocks, which allowed his teammates to make quick escapes. They also wore masks that allowed them to communicate with each other and their Wisps, as well as see through eachother's point of view to help them operate better as a team. Mimic's infiltration skills proved quite useful in sneaking into Eggman's bases and destroying them from the inside, and he claims to have escaped from many imprisonment devices. After many missions together, the other Diamond Cutters came to trust him completely with their very lives, but unbeknownst to them, Mimic was only in the group in order to gain profit from their missions and saw his trusting friends as nothing more than a means to this end.

During one mission at an Eggman base, Smithy the Lion, Slinger the Ocelot, and Claire Voyance, pretended to be captured by Mimic after he had shapeshifted into an Egg Pawn. After they managed to fool the guarding Egg Pawn there, Claire sensed a formation of Badniks on the far end of the base and two more on the inside that were recharging. After creating enough property damage, Mimic created an exit out of the facility with his Cube Wispon.

Betrayal[]

After Eggman managed to capture Sonic and take control of most of the world, Mimic decided that the mad doctor's victory was inevitable, and that he and his team would ultimately be crushed beneath his war machine. In order to save his own life, he secretly cut a deal with Eggman to betray the other Diamond Cutters in exchange for sparing him.

Mimic secretly betraying the team

Later, at the onset of the Eggman War, Mimic secretly brought a plan before the Diamond Cutters to take down an Eggman base that cause a blackout among his forces along the coastline. Claire, suspicious of the circumstances, told Whisper stay back, despite Mimic's insistence that all of them would be needed on the field, but she did agree that they could not pass up the opportunity. At the Eggman base that the team decided to take down, the Diamond Cutters found no opposition. Claire tried to use her extrasensory but could not sense anything, deducing that Eggman must have been emitting alpha waves somewhere to block her. Whisper scouted the exterior but found no opposition. She kept tabs on her teammates through the video feed in their masks.

After Mimic went to scout for an ambush, Claire, Smithy and Slinger pressed onwards to find large capsules where Claire believed the source of the alpha waves was coming from. In the capsules, the trio discovered Shadow Androids. Suddenly, the room was automatically locked and trapped them inside. As the Shadow Androids began to emerge from their capsules, Claire tried to use her Hover Wispon to break out but to no avail. Ordering his companions to fire at will, Smithy attacked the activated Shadow Androids with all his might using his Spike Wispon, but was soon killed. Slinger was then forced to fight the Shadow Androids with all his might and tried calling contacting Mimic and Whisper for an evacuation but they did not respond. Slinger was soon killed in battle. Claire was then forced to fight the Shadow Androids with all her might and tried to call out for Mimic for help, but he did not respond. Claire was soon killed in battle.

Eggman was impressed by Mimic's treachery and agreed to pardon him for his "crimes" against him, but his Wisp, disgusted by his heinous action, abandons him, though he felt nothing about it. When Eggman learned that Whisper was not among the casualties, Mimic tried to explain that she was no real threat to him, only to be ordered to eliminate her immediately or face the consequences.

Mimic uses Whisper's Wispon and his mask as proof to trick Eggman.

Upon reaching Whisper's location, he attempted to fool her by pretending to be Slinger, but only finds her Wispon laying on the ground and concludes that she had run off when the plan went awry. Fearing Eggman would fly him, Mimic decides to use her Wispon and his own mask, which was identical to hers, as proof for her death, believing her to be too cowardly to be a threat without her weapon or anyone-else to support her. He then walks away from the area whistling to himself, unaware that Whisper and her Orange Wisp were actually watching him while quietly hiding atop a tree branch.

It is unknown what Mimic was doing during the final days of the war. Likely, he went into hiding out of fear of getting killed in the war or by Eggman personally if he found out he was lied to. Whisper, who was both traumatized by the experience and vengeful at Mimic for his betrayal, hunted him throughout the war but never succeeded, though she aided the Resistance from time to time without revealing herself to them.

Tangle and Whisper[]

Issue #1[]

After the war as well as the events involving Neo Metal Sonic and Angel Island, Eggman (who had previously lost his memories and became Mr. Tinker, but then regained his mind thanks to Dr. Starline and Metal Sonic) learns that Whisper was not only alive, but was a significant threat to him during the war. Though angry that Mimic had lied to him, Eggman gives him a chance to finish what he was ordered to do before or else. To lure Whisper out, Mimic disguises himself as Sonic and begins committing crimes all over, such as painting graffiti Eggman symbols, abusing Chao and even literally stealing candy from babies. Suspicious about this, Whisper investigates into this and eventually finds "Sonic", who continues the facade before attempting to kill her with his knife. However, Whisper anticipated this and forces Mimic, who was still disguised as Sonic, on the run.

Whisper chases Mimic into Spiral Hill Village, where Whisper's friend, Tangle the Lemur resides. Using Sonic's appearance to fool the public, he uses a passing civilian woman as an unsuspecting meat shield, forcing Whisper to change her position of fire when trying to snipe him from a rooftop. He was then able to escape into an alleyway where he encounters Tangle, who demands to know why "Sonic" isn't running at full speed and why Whisper is chasing him. Sensing an opportunity, "Sonic" lies to Tangle that Whisper was being mind-controlled by Eggman using a chip in her mask, which the lemur falls for, and also advises her to attack first and ask questions later. As she leaves "Sonic" to recover from running, Whisper attempts to snipe him from a rooftop, but Mimic gives her a smug look with his real eyes, which confuses her and leaves her open for Tangle to tackle her. As they fought, this allows Mimic to escape unnoticed. After the fight, Whisper shows Tangle the truth using footage from her mask. Then they then both travel to the local museum to compare notes while Mimic looks on, taking the guise of a civilian that he used as a living shield.

While still in guise, Mimic observed through a museum window as Whisper explained to Tangle and her other friend, Jewel the Beetle about who Mimic is. He then pinned a knife on the museum door with a note that said, "We've chased each other in circles long enough. I'll be waiting for you the settle things once and for all". Below the message was some coordinates to where he was waiting for her.

Issue #2[]

Tangle and Whisper arrive at an abandoned Eggman Empire bunker, where Mimic was hiding out. Upon spotting the duo through a window, he remarks that while Whisper had become formidable with their old team's Wisps, she was never capable of working alone. He then decides to take advantage of Tangle's gullibility again by morphing into Jewel. Using Jewel's voice, Mimic attracts Tangle to his location. He then takes on Whisper's appearance and leads Tangle into a vault where he traps her inside.

He then morphs into Tangle and manages to convince Whisper by making her shirt look damaged, and then leads her into another trap with an Egg Hammer, which she promptly destroys. Mimic tries to finish her using bombs and a pistol, but fails and falls to the ground. Whisper then uses the Blue Wisp power to threaten Mimic to tell her where the real Tangle is, but then Mimic attempts to manipulate her by transforming into Slinger, Claire and Smithy while remarking how she failed to protect the team. In response, however, Whisper strikes and reminds him that he was the one who betrayed them, and that she will be the one to avenge their comrades. Mimic then reveals where Tangle is and dares Whisper to try to save her and escape before the bombs he set destroy the whole bunker.

As Whisper goes to save Tangle, Mimic exits the bunker and locks the door behind him. He then walks away in his real form, saying good-bye to his old friend-turned enemy. Unfortunately for him, his plan to kill Whisper fails as Tangle uses the safe she was trapped in to shield them both from the blast.

Issue #3[]

After surviving Mimic's trap, Whisper shows Tangle the video footage of how she and Mimic worked together alongside the other Diamond Cutters until he betrayed them and scarred her for life, making the lemur more determined to help her bring him to justice for his crimes. Knowing that Eggman won't accept faulty evidence a second time, she comes up with a plan to lead Mimic into a trap of their own.

The next morning, Mimic is forced by Eggman to return to the site of the explosion to search for solid proof of Tangle and Whisper's demise, or else be hunted by Metal Sonic. After some searching, Mimic finds an open safe that endured the explosion, showing that the duo had survived his trap. He also finds deliberate footprints leading him to a message drawn in the sand, stating: "WE END THIS WHERE WE STARTED". Knowing exactly what the message meant, he then asks Eggman to loan him some back-up.

Issue #4[]

At the old Diamond Cutters' base, Whisper and Tangle wait for Mimic to arrive, but find an army of Badniks heading towards them instead. While Whisper deals with the robots, Tangle goes inside and suddenly finds "Sonic", who claims that he arrived thanks to Tails. Pretending to believe this, Tangle then leads "Sonic" to the trap they set up for Mimic, but he is confused to find only a rec room with the deceased Diamond Cutters' masks hanging on the wall. Tangle then reveals that she wasn't fooled by Mimic's impersonation and springs the trap, which involved showing him old holograms of his old teammates giving him compliments and showing their trust in him in an attempt to mess him up like he did Whisper. Unfortunately, the trick had absolutely no affect on Mimic, who reveals that he never had any affection towards his old team in the first place and was only in it to benefit himself, which is why it wasn't a hard decision to betray them to Eggman.

After hearing this, Tangle becomes enraged and prepares to attack him, but Mimic morphs into Jewel, causing her to hesitate. After goading her to hit him anyway, he trips her up and prepares to finish her with his knife while gloating about taking her form to finish Whisper as well. However, Tangle hits him in the back with her tail, with Mimic calling her out for using such a cheap shot and Tangle stating that it was a "taste of his own medicine". They fight, but Mimic's superior combat skills enable him to get the upper hand. He grabs his knife and attempts to kill Tangle, but Whisper arrives to save her by bludgeoning him with his own former Wisp. Mimic then manipulates his old Wisp by reminding him of how he always hated violence, causing it to relent, but Whisper hits him with her Wispon anyway. Mimic was able to wrestle the Wispon away from her and then attempts to shoot her with it, but Tangle wraps her tail around him and swings him unto a table, breaking it. Mimic screams that he can't lose like this and attempts break free while changing into other forms, but Tangle tells him to surrender or else she'll squeeze him harder. After he finally submits, Whisper then prepares to execute him for all that he had done, but Tangle talks her out of it by stating that killing him wouldn't be the right choice and that letting him live with the shame of losing to them would be even worse than death. After much thought while looking at her old teammates' masks, she agrees with Tangle that the Diamond Cutters have been officially avenged, and comforts the Blue Wisp by saying that she doesn't blame it for relenting to attack its former partner.

They then take Mimic to Tails' workshop, where they entrap Mimic inside a specialized chamber that even he can't escape from. When Mimic boasts that he will eventually escape, Whisper vows to stop him if he does, and Mimic taunts her about how their teammates would react to her new attitude. But then Tangle insists that he should stay imprisoned, stating that it would be the safest place from Eggman, whose robots Mimic wasted in his failed attack on them. Unable to argue with this logic, Mimic expresses his utter hatred of the lemur. Tails then promises to have the chamber transported to the nearest prison, with Whisper and Tangle making him promise not to open it no matter who he sees is inside it.
