The Mind Flayer is the main antagonist of the 2023 IDW crossover comic, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles X Stranger Things.
Like the original version, the Mind Flayer is the ruler of the supernatural dimension, "the Upside Down", where it is the hive mind for most creatures within, such as the Demogorgons. Seeking new victims, the Mind Flayer sets its sights on New York City and plots to teleport thousands of people into the Upside Down.
Personality[]
The Mind Flayer remains an intelligent being whose sole motive is to conquer the Earth or destroy it. Shown to be clever and aware of his surroundings, the Mind Flayer was able to come up with "herding" New York citizens and having half of the population teleported within the Upside Down.
Biography[]
Somewhere between his defeat and making his return to Hawkins, the Mind Flayer found his way from a portal made by the Utroms when testing out a functioning interdimensional traveling teleporter that ultimately backfired. As the rest of the Utroms escaped Earth, some of the remaining were left behind, only for the Mind Flayer to control them into doing his every bidding. Using the teleporter, the Mind Flayer had it open a portal to New York's subway station where his Demodogs would come out and sooner have them round up New York civilians they come across into the subway, killing passengers inside a train and leaving their corpses within the Upside Down. The Mind Flayer then hatched a plot to have his Demogorgons and Demodogs round up thousands of New York civilians in the middle of Times Square where he would have half of the population consumed through the portals and teleported into the Upside Down.
Eventually, the Party and the Turtles band together, parted into groups to travel into the Upside Down while the other finds Dr. Baxter Stockman. Mike, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Lucas, and Will traveled within the subway to enter the gate, which they fought Demogorgons and burned them alive, entering the Upside Down where they found corpses of the previous victims. They stumbled upon a surviving Utrom member where they set it on fire and released a part of the Mind Flayer, reuniting with the hive mind crawling on a building. The Mind Flayer would begin the final touches of his plan as he had the brainwashed Utrom activate the teleporter to send out his army of Demogorgons and Demodogs, as well as having everyone in Times Square teleported there at once.
However, the Party and the Turtles were able to lure away the Demodogs from harming anyone and once the teleporter activated, they all fought against the Mind Flayer and his army of Demogorgons and Demodogs. Once his army has retreated back into the Upside Down, Raphael and Dustin destroyed the teleporter, thus thwarting the Mind Flayer's plans and closing the subway's gate.
The Mind Flayer, still roaming within the Upside Down, is likely to return during the events of Season 3.
Trivia[]
- Due to the crossover being non-canon and set between the second and third seasons of Stranger Things, whether or not the Mind Flayer would have any connections to Henry Creel/Vecna is best left interpretable.
