The Mastermind's minions are the secondary protagonists of the Newgrounds series Mastermind, and in the flash game Mastermind: World Conqueror. They are the loyal, determined and even expendable minions of the Mastermind.
The minions assist the Mastermind's one true goal, to take over and destroy the Earth. The minions are extremely diverse in their talents, ranging from simple armed guards, to financial supporters, to charismatic propagandists, to high-ranking assassins and patsies.
Almost all the minions are voiced by the legendary animator and series creator, Michael Swain. Egoraptor and TomaMoto have also voiced some of them.
Biography[]
It is unknown when the minions began working for the Mastermind, but what is certain, is that they've been with the evil leader long enough to help him create a massive empire of his own. Even to the point of building a self-sustained island lair for the Mastermind, equipped with a cataclysmic weapon known as the "doom laser", which is capable of destroying entire cities. The hiring process of the minions is unknown.
The most common occupation seen among minions are armed guards, although they have many talents, such as building complex weapons and spreading propaganda to keep pressure off of the evil empire. There are also henchman and patsies part of the empire that are at a higher rank than the generic minions. Minions are stationed all over the world, siphoning out any money they can, as well as looking for weaknesses in the countries they're posted in.
The minions have undying loyalty to their master, following all the Mastermind's commands without hesitation or failure. There are some minions, however, that are not very loyal and immature toward their master, although this always results in their death for their insubordination. Because of this, those who hate or distrust the Mastermind are forced to keep these thoughts to themselves, or openly risk their own death once they can no longer take the Mastermind's management style.

~ One of the minions during the start of the game. |
In this top-down management and base defending game, the player takes the role of either the Mastermind himself, or is enlisted in his crew as an unnamed and unseen minion. The minions are the direct method of making progress in the game, with the most common method being to defend the base from law-abiding attackers and performing missions.
Each base the player purchases for the Mastermind will have its own unique perks, as well as a limit of how many minions can be hired. There are a few designations available for minions: one of them is simply posting them outside the Mastermind's central base (which, if destroyed, ends the game), posting them in a control room where missions are plotted, posting them in a financial planning room where they can increase the lair's income the more minions are posted there, and lastly, placing them into a "minion pool", which puts minions on standby for missions. The more difficult the mission, the more minions are needed. The chances of minions coming back are lowered on harder missions.
Minions can be purchased indefinitely, as long as the player has the funds to buy them. When posted on base defense, minions will wander around aimlessly and look for threats, immediately running toward and firing at them once spotted. For base defense, henchmen can also be hired, which are unique minions that have perks in battle, making them more combat versatile than generic minions.
Patsies are also another type of minion the player can hire, which are unique characters meant for increasing the chance of success in some missions. The more these patsies are used, the more their "effectiveness" goes down, meaning the amount of extra success they can put onto missions will be less and less each time. At random, the game can choose for a hired patsy to become insubordinate, which further reduces the effectiveness of all hired patsies. To deal with this, the player can either have the problematic patsy executed, or simply wait out a timer, resetting them back to normal.
To advance the progress of the Mastermind's lair, finances, weaponry and power over the world, the player must perform "steal science" missions. In other words, technology must be stolen from different parts of the world to advance the technology of the Mastermind's empire. Aside from stealing science, there are other types of missions minions can carry out: robberies, spreading propaganda, kidnapping targets, killing targets, sabotaging and firing the doom laser to cause colossal damage to an area.
In the end, the minions' efforts finally lead up to being able to destroy the Earth, although the Mastermind escapes to space before this happens, leaving all of his minions behind to die along with the rest of Earth's population. However, this leaves the Mastermind alone and somewhat remorseful, with absolutely nothing else to do.
Appearance[]
All generic minions appear as thin grunts wearing red military uniforms with red goggles. These uniforms are somewhat reminiscent of Russian military uniforms worn during the second World War. Unique minions will look like completely different people, which are usually high-ranking officials in the Mastermind's collection of employees.
Personality[]
Much like the Mastermind himself, the minions are shown to have a remorselessly evil side, but also an immature and comical one. The minions often act as comic reliefs, and though most of them show unwavering loyalty to the Mastermind's evil deeds, some are shown to hate working for him, even to the point of messing with him.
Together, they all have the ability and know how to create and maintain an evil empire, which can include traveling to different parts of the world to manage any type of evil business. Some episodes show that some minions may have even more maturity and self-control than their own leader. In one episode, one quits on the spot as he thought he was going to get a promotion, but the Mastermind instead hired a literal pair of breasts with legs.
Trivia[]
- In the third episode, it is heavily implied that at least one or two of the Mastermind's minions are his own children. Meaning that the Mastermind may even employ his own relatives to do his evil bidding.
