Minobi are a type of yokai from Japanese folklore that only appear during rain, frequently near bodies of water - this contradicts with Minobi being fire-based spirits yet their supernatural flame seems to thrive in such conditions, they are particularly aggressive and belong to a popular subtype of folkloric monster known as a "ghost-light" (which includes such things as the Will o' The Wisp).

History[]

Minobi manifest as small orbs of ghostly fire that frequent large areas of water during rain, they will float aimlessly around until they catch sight of a traveller, especially one wearing a traditional form of raincoat known as a "mino" (which was made of straw).

Minobi would then quickly assault the raincoat via attaching themselves to it, any attempt by the frightened victim to remove the flame would only result in the Minobi multiplying rapidly - this often forced their victim to toss the raincoat away and flee, to avoid further injury.

Some believed Minobi to be the work of mischief-prone kitsune or tanuki rather than a true yokai in its own right but as with all folklore accounts varied from region to region (and even individual).

More rational minds have come to see the Minobi as either swamp gas or insects such as fireflies (which would explain the swarming behavior, which may of been mistaken as aggression by unwary travellers).
