~ Tanaka to Ryuk on intelligence |
Minoru Tanaka is the main protagonist of the 2019 Death Note one-shot chapter the 'A-Kira' Story. He is a smart but lazy student who gains the Death Note but decides to sell it instead of using it so he can profit.
Personality[]
Tanaka, just like his predecessor, is extremely smart and capable of coming up with plans that even Near couldn't stop and could be the smartest student in all of Japan if he really put the effort into it but is lazy, apathetic and unmotivated. Morally, he is unconcerned with matters of justice unlike his predecessor, only money. He is unwilling to kill himself but doesn't care much if those he's selling the notebook to do, as shown when he tells the US and China to quit talking about "nonsense" like that. He also has a bit of an arrogant streak as he tells Ryuk never to contact him again which leads to his death.
Biography[]
Nine years after the death of Light Yagami and the disappearance of Kira, a middle-school student named Minoru Tanaka is sitting on a swing looking at his low English grade when suddenly the Shinigami Ryuk appears before him and hands him the Death Note. Tanaka is quite smart but is lazier and less motivated school-wise, unlike his predecessor. Ryuk tells Tanaka what the death note does and about the exploits of Light which impresses Tanaka though he decides against using the note because it would be harder to get away with in the modern era. He asks Ryuk how far he can be away from him and how many people can see him which helps him come up with his plan: To sell the Death Note. He then returns the notebook to Ryuk and asks him to bring it back to him in two years.
Two years go by and Ryuk appears in Tanaka's house once again with the notebook and Tanaka, who now has a Yotsuba bank account which he wasn't old enough to have three years ago (something that will be critical for his plan), asks Ryuk to bring a message to Sakura TV which states "THE POWER TO KILL REMOTELY AS USED BY KIRA IS BEING PUT UP FOR AUCTION. IF YOU WANT TO BUY IT, USE THE #POWER OF KIRA ON TWITTER AND INDICATE YOUR BID AMOUNT ON AMERICAN DOLLARS." He has Ryuk hold it up on live TV for thirty seconds and then return to his house by going underground. This sparks a bidding war for Kira's power on Twitter. Near, upon learning of this Kira, dubs him "A-Kira" or auction-Kira. Tanaka is surprised by how well the bidding is going and decides to set a deadline of a week. He has Ryk bring another message to Sakura which states "ONE WEEK LEFT UNTIL THE END OF AUCTION. IT MAY END PREMATURELY AS WELL. YOU WILL BE INFORMED IF THAT HAPPENS. THE TRANSACTION WILL BE FINAL. NO COMPLAINTS, NO RETURNS."
Tanaka hears some people in his class the next day discussing how some of the bigger bids online are likely from government proxies so sends Sakura another message via Ryuk stating "DON'T BOTHER WITH TWITTER. PUT YOUR GOVERNMENT REPS INTO THE MEDIA TO MAKE AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT OF HOW MUCH YOU WILL PAY." This prompts a bidding war to break out between the US and China. Both sides promise to use it only for peaceful purposes but Tanaka is annoyed by their statements and sends out another message which states "ANY WORLD LEADER MUST NAME A PRICE ONLY. NO OTHER NONSENSE."
The next day, Tanaka decides to end the auction and releases a message informing the world he plans on selling his power to the Americans for the price of one quadrillion yen. He then releases his final message stating "THE MONEY FROM THE WINNING BID SHOULD BE DEPOSITED BY MAY 27TH OF THIS YEAR IN EQUAL AMOUNTS TO EVERY PERSON WITH A YOTSUBA BANK OF JAPAN SAVINGS ACCOUNT AND REGISTERED RESIDENCE AGED 60 AND UNDER AS OF THE DATE OF MAY 24th, 2019 which equals one billion yen per person. Tanaka's mom barges into his room in excitement upon realizing her son has a Yotsuba account. Tanaka won't be able to access the money for a month but is still satisfied with what he's done. Tanaka orders Ryuk to bring the notebook to President Trump and never contact him again for any reason because the notebook is so dangerous and gives up his memories of it.
One month later when Tanaka goes to access his money he falls to the ground and dies of a sudden heart attack. This is because of a new rule added by the Shinigami King which makes it so that anyone who tries buying the death note will die upon receiving it and anyone who sells it will die upon receiving the money. Ryuk had considered telling Tanaka but didn't because of how insistent he was that Ryuk not contact him again.

Trivia[]
- Tanaka's actions did lead to a boom in the Japanese economy which was called the "Kira Bubble" though he wasn't around to see it. Due to inflation, it's likely this boom did not last long.
- Tanaka is one of the two human wielders (alongside Soichiro Yagami) of the Death Note to have never used it at least once.
