~ Mip's first and most famous line. |
“ | No... Don't fret, Pim. Perhaps you're right. Perhaps all along, this was your quest. Please deliver it to the princess for me. You can tell her it was from you. I... I grant you my one quest. (...) I never meant to interfere with such a wonderful friendship. Mip, becoming cold. Mip, going into the light. Mip, fading away... | „ |
~ Mip's last words. attempting to frame Pim for delivering his bomb to the princess. |
Mip is the main antagonist of the Smiling Friends episode "Enchanted Forest". He is a small, Hobbit-like man who befriends Pim and Charlie during their visit to the Enchanted Forest, but is later revealed to have far darker intentions than he initially lets on.
He is voiced by series' co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices DJ Spit, Satan, Jason, Gnarly, Mr. Peanut, and Mr. Landlord in the same series.
Appearance[]
Mip is a short, humanoid forest folk with a giant, exaggerated nose, large hands, and comparatively detailed features, parodying the protagonists of the Hobbit franchise. His clothing style is very similar to that of Bilbo Baggins, as is his short reddish hair.
Personality[]
“ | He was the entire reason why I haven’t been able to smile for my portrait. He’s my stalker. […] No, seriously. I have blocked him on everything, And I’ve had to move twice because of him. | „ |
~ The Princess revealing Mip’s true nature to Charlie and Pim. |
Mip initially revealed himself as a wise, friendly, benevolent individual who was very knowledgeable about both the Enchanted Forest and its quests. He seemed to be very helpful to both Pim and Charlie, as demonstrated when he escorted them to the princess's castle and throughout the forest. Mip appeared to favor Charlie in particular, as it is implied that he had a crush on him. While knowledgeable, Mip also demonstrated some incompetence when he couldn't solve even the simplest tasks by himself, as evidenced when he needed Charlie's guidance to remove a mere thorn from a sentient tree. Mip also seems to have a love for music and his small guitar, which he carries on his back.
Mip's helpful nature turned out to be sinister when it was revealed that he was actually a dangerous stalker who planned to kill the princess using a bomb. This explosion would also have killed Charlie and Pim, implying that he never truly cared about either of them. The princess revealed that Mip was violently obsessive, as she had to move several times due to his stalking.
Biography[]
Pim and Charlie go to the Enchanted Forest to cheer up the princess, who has been unable to smile for her portrait. While there, they are kidnapped by a witch who intends to eat them, but Mip shows up and rescues them by frightening off the witch with a crudely made crucifix. He introduces himself and quickly becomes friends with Charlie after giving him a potion to cure his headache, while Pim expresses skepticism toward him. When they mention that they're going to see the princess, Mip shows them a wooden box and tells them he is on a quest to find a hero worthy of delivering the gift to her. Mip is inspired to sing a song after Charlie saves the life of a tree creature, which accompanies a montage of Charlie performing various heroic deeds and completing different quests.
Exhausted from questing all day, the three set up camp at the base of the mountain where the princess's castle sits. Mip tells Charlie that he is the hero worthy of delivering his package to the princess, and then he and Charlie go to sleep. Pim, who has been growing increasingly angry throughout the quest montage, is overcome with jealousy that Charlie has completed all the quests. He tries to take Mip's box from him while he is sleeping but accidentally wakes Charlie. Charlie and Pim get into a fight (a parody of Déagol and Sméagol's struggle for the One Ring) and inadvertently knock Mip onto a protruding spear, mortally wounding him. With his dying breath, Mip apologizes for getting in the way of Pim and Charlie's friendship and tells Pim that he can deliver the package and tell the princess it's from him. As he dies, Mip's body contorts into a grotesque, demonic form before melting into a black goo, bewildering Pim and Charlie.
Upon arriving at the princess's castle, Pim and Charlie present her with the box. Once they reveal it was from Mip, she explains that he had been stalking her, and that she had blocked him on social media and moved twice just to get him to leave her alone. She opens the box to find a homemade bomb, which nearly kills her, Pim, and Charlie before she hastily throws it out the window. Since Mip was the reason the princess had been unable to smile, the news of his death comes as a great relief, and she finally smiles.
After the credits, Charlie is shown to be extremely sick, revealing that the headache potion Mip had given him was poisoned, giving him green skin, a sore throat, and warts across his body.
Trivia[]
- Mip is visually based on Bilbo Baggins as he appeared in the Rankin-Bass adaptation of The Hobbit and its sequel, Return of the King.
- Mip's actions were inspired by Ricardo López, better known as the Björk Stalker, who, like Mip, stalked a celebrity. In Ricardo's case, it was Björk, and he ultimately delivered her a package containing a pipe bomb before taking his own life in an apparent murder-suicide.
- Mip was animated by British animator and YouTuber Harry Partridge. H
- His is name, "Mip," is "Pim" spelled backwards, which likely nods to how he briefly replaces Pim as Charlie's best friend.
- When Charlie tells Mip that his song helped him become a hero, Mip replies, "Well, maybe I like that," even though, outside of that one instance, he always referred to himself in the third person.
- As soon as Mip dies, he transforms into a demonic entity while screeching and dissolving into a puddle of black goo. This serves as foreshadowing for his true nature, which is revealed shortly afterward.
- Some people have theorized that the witch Mip scared off wasn't afraid of his crucifix but rather of Mip himself, due to his history as a stalker.
