Miquella of the Haligtree, also known as Miquella the Unalloyed is a major antagonist in the 2022 dark fantasy action role-playing video game Elden Ring, serving as the main antagonist in the DLC Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. He is the son of Marika and Radagon, as well as the twin brother of Malenia.
He is a revered demigod that tenders to those that have been exiled and outcasted from the Golden Order, seeking to create a newfound order where everyone can live equally in harmony. Inspiring immense love and loyalty to many, he also seeks to have his half-brother, Radahn, rule by his side as his consort.
He is voiced by Naomi McDonald.
Personality[]
Miquella is revered by many of his followers as a kind and compassionate deity that cares for the well being of others, as he created the Haligtree primarily as a place for those that were outcasted by the Golden Order to live in. He is one of the few demigods that is held with respect and fondness even amongst his own family, due to his actions and kind-hearted nature. For this reason, he inspires loyalty amongst many, including those that once served over demigods before converting to him.
In contrast to some of his other siblings, Miquella himself values his family very closely, primarily Malenia, who has served as his blade ever since he tendered her curse. However, like some of his siblings, he detests the Greater Will and its Golden Order, seeking to replace it with a newfound age where everyone can live together in peace.
However, much of Miquella's kindness was casted off when he began cutting off pieces of himself; divesting himself of doubts, fears and love. While this shows a fierce determination to achieve his goals, it robbed him parts of himself that made him compassionate in the first place to the point where St. Trina, Miquella's other self, implores the Tarnished to slay Miquella before he could become a god.
In doing so, Miquella opted to employ more sinister methods of achieving his goals and this is most defined in his relationship with Radahn, who he had be in love with since they were children and promised to be his consort when the time would come. When Radahn turned down his proposal, however, Miquella sought out to convert him into his obedient companion by having Malenia unleash the Scarlet Rot at Caelid.
He has also proven to be manipulative, as he would also use his charming nature to manipulate Mohg as his pawn, who would serve as a vessel to revive Radahn. Since Miquella departing the Haligtree had the direct consequence of it decaying and being left to its luck, this reveals a conditional aspect to Miquella's compassion, as his downtrodden followers were promised a home, only to be left behind to their fate once more by the one they served and revered.
His abilities to charm people with his love and presence has caused some to believe and view him as a terrifying being with a fearsome power. In the end, the truth of his actions led some of his former followers opposing him, while others chose remain by his side out of genuine loyalty.
