Mirok was the science officer of a Romulan vessel which was assigned to test an experimental prototype phased cloaking device, which would render a ship not only invisible but capable of moving through solid objects. The experimental nature of the process caused an explosion in the engine core which severely crippled the ship and killed many of the crew including the commander, leaving Mirok in command.
The Enterprise answered the Romulan ship's distress call and Commander Riker beamed over with a team to assist. Mirok kept the full details of the explosion from them. Lieutenant Commander LaForge determined that the ship's graviton field generator would need to be replaced and Mirok gave permission for him and Ensign Ro to take the damaged generator back to the Enterprise to be replicated. However, a fault saw them apparently killed in a transporter accident. Riker and the remaining crew continued to assist Mirok, managing to shut off and eject the engine core before it exploded, with the Enterprise's shields protecting the Romulan ship.
The Enterprise crew began working on building a basic replacement engine core for the Romulan ship, while setting up a power transfer to keep them running. However, Mirok became concerned when Lieutenant Commander Data began investigating a high build-up of chroniton particles. Worrying that the Enterprise crew would discover the truth of the project, Mirok instructed his deputy Varel to set up a muon feedback wave inside the power transfer, which would cause the Enterprise to explode once they went to warp.
With the new engine installed, Mirok said his farewells to Captain Picard, pretending to agree with his hope that the co-operation between the Federation and the Romulans was not an isolated incident, and departed, expecting the Enterprise to soon be destroyed. In fact, the leakage from the phased cloaking device had caused LaForge and Ro to become phased and they had overheard Mirok's plan. They made it back into phase in order to warn the Enterprise of Mirok's sabotage.
