Mirror Man (DC)

The Mirror Man is a minor antagonist in the DC Comics universe and a supporting antagonist in the Batman comics in the 50s.

He uses mirrors in his crimes, in a fashion similar to the Mirror Master. The first Mirror Man was Floyd Ventris, a criminal scientist from Gotham City. The second was a succesor to the Mirror Master and the third was a inmate from Arkham Asylum known as "Narcissus".

History[]

Pre-Crisis[]

Floyd Ventris was a low-life criminal sentenced to seven years in Gotham State Penitentiary. However, he break a mirror and using one of its pieces to distract the guards, eventually managing to escape. Since then, Ventris began using mirrors and reflections in his criminal activities under a new moniker; "Mirror Man", by confusing police with illusions. Wanting to be among the best of Gotham's criminals, Ventris invented an X-ray machine made of mirrors that allowed him to see under everything, including Batman's mask, revealing to Ventris the fact that Bruce Wayne was in fact, the Batman.

Ventris tried to use his new discovery for his own gains, but Batman weakened Ventris' claims by writing a letter to the Gotham's paper numbering how many similar claims had always been disproved. However, Mirror Man tried again, but wasn't able to capture any incriminating images of Bruce Wayne under the batsuit. Batman managed to devise a means of counteracting Ventris' X-ray device by wearing a cowl made of, mirrors. So Ventris' claims fell apart again, and Mirror Man was recaptured and sent back to prison. Over the years, the character has made minor appearances in the Caped Crusader's comics.

Narcissus[]

In the three-part miniseries Arkham Reborn, a different Mirror Man appeared. This person has an obsession with mirrors and has also used the alias of "Narcissus" (after the character of the same name from Greek mythology). Nothing else was known about him other than the fact that he was first seen walking out of a forest in Haiti, the intelligible words that he spoke were repeated by him like an echo, and he had a human appearance. Mirror Man is one of the Arkham Asylum inmates alongside No-Face and the "Hamburger Lady" that are labeled as Jeremiah Arkham's "special subjects" that nobody knows about.

New Rogues[]

Another character called Mirror Man appears during the "Gotham Underground" storyline. This version is a member of the New Rogues assembled by the Penguin. As this group is modeled after the Rogues, Mirror Man is inspired by the Mirror Master. Mirror Man and the New Rogues were enlisted by Libra to get the Rogues back into the Secret Society of Super Villains. He later fought the Mirror Master, who was able to use his mirrors to blind Mirror Man and then strangle him with one of the Trickster's springs.

A version of Mirror Man renamed Lloyd Ventrix appeared in the Batman: The Animated Series episode "See No Evil", voiced by Michael Gross. Ventrix was an ex-con/lab assistant who became divorced from Helen Ventrix, who had the custody of their daughter, Kimberly. Using a suit that allowed him to turn invisible that he acquired from a place he worked at on parole, Lloyd sneaked into Kimberly's bedroom and posed as her imaginary friend "Mojo".
Mirror Man (Floyd Ventris) appears in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode "A Bat Divided!". He is seen at the 8 Bar, where the villains hang out, when Firestorm and the three Batmen arrive
Dr. Floyd Ventris appeared in The Penguin episode "Cent’anni", portrayed by T. Ryder Smith. This version is a corrupt psychiatrist from Arkham State Hospital who was on Carmine Falcone's payroll. After Sofia Falcone was falsely accused of the Hangman murders and imprisoned in Arkham, she was put under examination by Dr. Ventris. He tries to force a confession out of her by having another patient attack her. He also tortures her with electroshock, and eventually leads her to kill Magpie after he certifies her as criminally insane.
