Misaki is the main antagonist of the Junji Ito manga "I Don't Want to Be a Ghost", sometimes entitled as "Anything But a Ghost".
She is a seemingly innocent looking woman who has the ability to detect the spirits of those who have died as a result of being breastfed by her mother who died giving birth to her and was a ghost. She appears to get in relationships with unsuspecting men so that she can eat the ghosts that follow them.
In the manga, she meets up with a young man named Shigeru, who finds her in the middle of the forest.
Biography[]
Past[]
Within the story, it was mentioned that when she was born, Misaki's mother was a ghost after she died giving birth to her, and when she was born, her mother was already a ghost. Out of care for her child, her mother would come to breastfeed her. Misaki was nourished and raised by her ghost mother. Ever since, she mentions that she "never feels right without it" ever since, which eventually started her craving for ghosts.
I Don't Want to Be a Ghost[]
The manga starts of with Shigeru driving through a forest at night when he suddenly comes across a confused young woman who appears to be bleeding heavily. In horror of this, He rushes her to the hospital, but the doctors discover that the blood was actually not hers. She was taken away by the police. They then ask Shigeru about this, but he cannot answer of how.
After days later, Yuina, who was his wife, tells him that a young lady is there to see him. It later is revealed that she was the woman that Shigeru helped her on a mountain road the other day. The young woman later tell him that her name is Misaki and tells him that she had been working on a student film with her "friends", only to get separated from them. Misaki asks Shigeru about what does he like about her, in which Shigeru says that anybody would fall for her. She would give Shigeru a phone number so they can meet again in private.
They decided to stay at the Rue Noir Hotel, which is a sex hotel, to stay there for the night, while also have done sex with each other. Shigeru asks Misaki about what does she like about him, in which she responds that the reason she likes him is because of the ghosts that follow him. Shigeru was a bit confused of her response. Misaki then realizes that only she could see them and tells him that she always liked them. She later tells him that her mother was a ghost at the moment of her birth and would breastfeed her as a child. Misaki says that she got addicted to the spirit world after what her ghost mother did to her. Shigeru then thinks that Misaki was crazy. Misaki asks if Shigeru couldn't see the ghosts all around him, only to be shown that he already fell asleep.
Shigeru wakes up late only to see that Misaki's bare body was heavily bleeding onto the bed. However, Shigeru was more concerned with rushing home to his pregnant wife Yuina, making lame excuses for when she asks him where he was, chastising Shigeru for staying out very late and missing her phone calls. Shigeru tries to break off his affair with Misaki, only for her to tell Yuina about that Shigeru cheated on her for Misaki. Yuina becomes very enraged at the fact that Shigeru cheated on her and reacts violently by grabbing a knife and threatens to kill both Shigeru and Misaki.
Shortly after this, Yuina killed herself by stabbing herself, which also made them lose their unborn child. At the funeral, Shigeru was mourning for his wife's death, however Misaki is shown to not be concerned for him, telling him he shouldn't be sad. Misaki then reveals her true motivations for tagging along with Shigeru when she telling him that she needs to eat ghosts to stay alive, and tells him that Yuina and their baby have now joined the ghosts that follow him. She chases the ghosts of Yuina and her unborn child around the room, grasps at them, and then eats them right in front of Shigeru, much to his horror and fear. Shigeru even hears the screams of Yuina as Misaki proceeds to eat their ghosts, as well as the noises of crunching and munching. Misaki would them make a disturbing, twisted grin after having eating Yuina, including her unborn child. Following this incident, she continued on with eating the ghosts that were surrounding Shigeru.
From that day on, Misaki would continuously stalk Shigeru, just so that she could prey on more ghosts that have been following him. As a result of the tragic death of Shigeru's wife and her ghost was eaten by Misaki, Shigeru fell on hard times, in which he would then lose his job and his house. While living life as a bum on the streets, he was hit with a terminal illness, which got him sent to the hospital on the brink of death. In the final comic strip, Shigeru is frightened by the sight of Misaki, who is shown to be stalking him as he is dying and waiting for the opportunity to eat Shigeru's ghost the moment he flatlines, even after everything he went through because of what she caused.
Personality[]
Misaki at first seems like an innocent and friendly young lady who seems to have a want to owe everything for her ghost mother for taking care of her. However, as the comic goes on, she is later revealed to be a manipulative, remorseless, and bloodthirsty ghost who has an obsessive appetite for ghosts, not caring if she were to eat a child, as she was also shown to eat the ghost of the unborn child of Shigeru and Yuina and is shown to enjoy doing so. The only reason why she likes to follow and stalk Shigeru was only because he was surrounded by ghosts that she could feast on and not because she genuinely cared for him, despite having helped her at the mountain road in the beginning of the story. Her lack of care for Shigeru is also shown when she dismisses his feelings at Yuina's funeral. Misaki is also opportunistic as she was willing to wait just the right moment to eat Shigeru's ghost at the hospital the moment he dies from his terminal illness came to him.

Trivia[]
- In the comic, it was mentioned that she told Shigeru to working on a student film with her friends, but got separated from them. However, it is possible that this could be a lie to trick Shigeru into letting her come with him.
- Yuina did threaten to kill Shigeru after hearing from Misaki when he decides to try to break off his affair with her. This caused Yuina so much emotional pain that she decided to take her own life by stabbing herself in the bathroom, along with the death of Yuina's unborn child.
- There is an implication that the ghosts are sentient, (having bones, organs, etc. and can feel pain,), as implied when Misaki was making crunching and munching noises as she was snacking on Yuina's unborn child.
- In the story, there were implications that Misaki was not a normal person. The following of said implications was that:
- In the beginning, it was implied that she has already murdered some other countless ghosts as it was mentioned by the police that the blood that was oozing from her was NOT hers.
- She mentions that she only likes Shigeru not because of who he was, but because of the ghosts following him, implying her craving for eating ghosts.
- She was born when her mother was a ghost, meaning that Misaki was not a human, but is actually a ghost.
- She bled onto the bed's pillows that Shigeru was using, although she had no injuries.
- She had no concern of the death of Shigeru's wife Yuina.
