~ Miss Delight to The Player before giving chase to them

Miss Delight is a major antagonist in Deep Sleep, the third chapter of the 2021 indie horror video game Poppy Playtime.

She is one of Playtime Co's Toys and a former teacher at Playcare's School who, following the Hour of Joy, lost her mind and cannibalized her sisters (who were identical others) to survive, eventually becoming the sole remaining toy inside the school.

She is voiced by Avalon Delaney.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Miss Delight was one of the teachers/"sisters" created for the Playcare's school to educate the kids. However, on the dreadful day called "The Hour of Joy", Miss Delight and her sisters turned against Playtime CO.'s employees, with a tape recording showing them chase one employee into a room and kill him. After the event was over, all the teachers were locked inside the school by CatNap in order to keep them from harming the children. Miss Delight began to fall into madness due to starvation, realising her sisters were purposefully keeping food away from her so they could eat her once she dies. Making a makeshift weapon called "Barb" who she genuinely thinks is sapient, Miss Delight killed her siblings and cannibalized them to survive.

At some point, Miss Delight would come into contact with CatNap. Despite being vengeful at him for being responsible for her current state, Miss Delight would form a truce with him, promising each other to report whatever of interest they saw to each other and the Prototype.

Chapter 3: Deep Sleep[]

When the protagonist is going through the Playcare's school, solving the puzzles to restore power to all of Playcare, at one point, they can hear Miss Delight's voice over an intercom. She initially sounds sweet and kind as she reacts in surprise, remembering the protagonist as a former employee of Playtime CO., although she is surprised that they are still alive. Still, she sweetly gives the protagonist a warning that CatNap would be displeased at their presence and that, for their own safety, they should depart from the area while they can.

However, as the protagonist makes more progress through the school, Miss Delight's voice can be heard again, and this time, more of a hint of mischievousness, sadism, and even cruelty could be heard in it. She chastises the protagonist for not listening to her warning, comparing them to "the other humans" who'd been in the school. But then, she savors the thought of finding out whether or not the protagonist will scream like she made them scream, hinting at both her past cruel actions committed in the school during the Hour of Joy and her current intentions toward the protagonist.

Once the protagonist nears their completion of the school puzzle, Miss Delight fully appears, emerging from a door. She quickly bashes a nearby generator to shut off the lights in order to make the ensuing chase easier for herself, though this also does the protagonist a favor, as this releases a battery that they will need. She then begins chasing the protagonist through the school, intent on devouring them. The protagonist must keep their eye on her, as she mainly moves toward them whenever they look away from her, as well as whenever the lights are either dim or low (she will not move when the protagonist looks at her, or when the lights are at a high enough level of brightness). In addition, the protagonist must utilize various large batteries by moving them around to different sockets to open the right pathway in order to escape. Upon finding the right pathway, the protagonist is then pursued even more quickly than before by Miss Delight. However, she is defeated when the protagonist, just in time, pulls a lever to drop a metal door onto her, killing her when it bashes her over the head. She is last seen with her body lying on the floor, blood spilling out of her crushed head.

Appearance[]

Miss Delight is the first monster who actually appears human. She looks like a young human woman with bright, blue eyes and short, blonde hair. She has red, rosy cheeks and a red hairbow on her head. She wears a turquoise apron with the picture of an apple on it over a yellow blouse and a red necktie. She wears a red dress with white polka dots on it. Her porcelain-like shell is fractured at the mouth area, revealing her fleshy red insides and huge humanoid teeth which she uses to tear through her prey. As revealed in her cardboard cutout and 3D model, it's revealed that before being damaged she once had black eyelashes, a button nose and a wide grin of pearly white teeth.

Personality[]

When first heard, Miss Delight sounds sweet, kind, and very bubbly. She almost sounds as though she is genuinely trying to warn the protagonist to get out of Playcare so that they do not suffer the same fate as the other teachers and orphans during the Hour of Joy. In some ways, she may very well be, as part of what humanity may still linger within her.

However, when she is next heard, it is clear that Miss Delight is just as deranged and hungry for human flesh as Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs, and CatNap. This is further proven by a videotape found by the protagonist that indicates that CatNap was right to keep the children safe from her in a room, as she gleefully states that she likely would have killed them. Her insanity is even visible on her face as she pursues the protagonist through the school.

Trivia[]

  • As he makes toys that failed him a part of him, it can be presumed that the Prototype captured Miss Delight's remains after her death, though it may also be possible that the Prototype didn't view Miss Delight as important enough to add to himself.
  • Thus far, Miss Delight is the only Poppy Playtime antagonist whose chase sequence consists of puzzle solving, due to the shifting locations of the batteries the protagonist must use. Every other major antagonist simply chased the protagonist to their deaths.
    • While CatNap's final encounter also involves puzzle-solving, his is not so much of a chase as the protagonist is rather stationary and only moves around to block his pathway to them.
  • Miss Delight is so insane that it is implied that even CatNap is disturbed by this, which is said to be why he doesn't go to the school.
    • She also remarks that she would've killed the children if CatNap had not locked the door holding her and her sisters back.
  • Miss Delight is so far the only experiment who can document things via VHS tapes and paper notes, which she does about her insanity.
    • Although The Prototype is intellectually capable of such a task, it's unknown if his anatomy allows him to hold any writing materials without breaking them. He also doesn't use VHS tapes.
  • It is theorized by many that she is the former human Claire Harper, the PlayCare orphanage counselor and caretaker of Marie Payne (later Mommy Long Legs) who tried to find out the secret behind Marie's nightmares and panic attacks.
